Default 2011 CX-7 Speaker Upgrade

Am waiting on four Pioneer 4-way 6X8’s from Crutchfield. Good specs and well reviewed. Come with free adapter cables. Am hoping bass response will carry well without adding a subwoofer.

Pulled the old speakers out already - never seen such cheap units in my whole life. Sounded better than I would have ever expected, but lacking any way you look at it.

Covered as much interior door cavity space as I could reach and the speaker mounting surfaces with rubber/asphalt/foil-backed window wrap material from Lowe’s - two $10 rolls did all four doors and should dampen vibes noticeably. Snugged up all the internal bolts as well.

Note: Do not use those rubber/foam/whatever internal cavity cups/buckets from Crutchfiled behind your speakers - it attenuates a lot of bass according to another review. Just be sure to get a good seal when mounting the speaker baskets using double-sided tape or foam and ensure you separate the sound waves from ‘leaking’ into the door cavity.

Post Install
Well, they’re in and sound fine. Didn’t even use any tape or such when mounting - the ‘wrap’ material made a fine seal all by itself. Kudos to Crutchfield for including free adapter cables. Sound is greatly improved and there’s plenty of volume with the factory base radio unit. Even left the treble/bass settings at zero. Will button up all the door panels when the spare fasteners come in and call it a day...
