Is completely seamless silicone FMIC piping feasible?

I'm sure this is an incredibly stupid question for some reason not yet apparent to me (other than perhaps cost), but is it not possible to form a 2 piece FMIC piping kit out of silicone? Perhaps wound with some additional wire for rigidity, yet still flexible enough to weasel it in and out of the way as needed?

Would 3-ply with additional wire reinforcement be light enough to be practical? under $500?

Just curious. Eliminating the couplers would be worth a premium, particularly if the fit was immaculate.

The problem is expansion. Under pressure the piping will expand and the thought is lag will be greatly increased and hitting targets will be a challenge.

Anyone else wanna chime in please do?

So I guess you'd have to augment the rigidity too much and the required flexibility would be lost. That's a downer, would be kick ass to have 1 piece on each side of the FMIC.

My 3" Widepath came today, btw. Awesome quality and it inspired the thought - thanks for another kick ass piece to put on my car!

Have a look at the HDi clamps
Reduces the number of silicone joiners down to 4
Turbo -> hot pipe
Hot pipe -> IC
IC -> cold pipe
Cold pipe -> throttle body

The silicone is probably rigid enough to take the boost pressures we run. A lot of cars run large runs of silicone piping.

I am not sure about costs but in terms of flow, a smoother pipe will have some advantages.

Also silicone grabs dirt and will be harder to keep "shiny" in the engine bay.

The biggest reason is because it is probably cheaper to have some piping made (and a lot of places weld piping) and use existing couplers on the market rather than have large custom silicone pieces fabricated.

Or you could buy bends, use a pipe cutter and bead roller with couplers yourself on the cheap too.

JBR have you thought about making FMIC aluminum piping kits that would fit something like a TR8 or others.

Definitely possible and probably a pretty good way to go. I just don't see it being cost effective for a one-off for your setup.

Thanks for the pic - I certainly wasn't thinking of anything too far from the ordinary where there wouldn't be a substantial number of people wanting to run the two hoses, whether it be for a K04 / BNR S3 or another turbo if a hotside coupler was needed.

I was thinking the relative flexibility of silicone would allow it to fit in a variety of setups that conform to our typical routing pattern and still meet the end tank couplers cleanly on a variety of 2.5" ICs, and hopefully fit it in a box that was reasonable to ship without kinking.

The Synapse kit for the Genone came to mind with snaking the horseshoe bend into position as it comes up to meet the hot pipe at the top of the radiator - it's a bit wonky, but if it were the least bit flexible it would be a breeze, and then hot pipe could run all the way up to the hot side as a contiguous piece as well.

Whether or not the materials and composition were cost prohibitive or plausible with heat and expansion... well that's why I asked Jamie if this was within the realm of reason. Keeping it clean might be a challenge I've overlooked as well.

I am in the market for a FMIC kit, so please Jamie But I do not think silicone would be something I am interested with. Because it would get dirty quickly and be hard to clean like Lex said; plus I know you can make IC piping out of silicone for a decent price; however, silicone IC piping that will withstand high temperatures and hold shape is CRAZY expensive! My cousin used to build custom parts for subi's and he took a crack at the complete IC silicone piping kits and those are the two problems he found and what customers reported.

How about a hybrid setup like this one. Do silicone for the wrap around bends then hard plumb off the throttle body and hard plumb off the turbo. That would drastically cut down on clamps. Keep the silicone areas out of the heat. Also be slightly flexible for a vast choice of intercoolers.

There ya go. Use silicone to go around the bends in the front so folks can trim to fit larger/lengthier cores. Good thinking.

So I think it's pretty much decided; JBR should make a FMIC pipe kit finished in wrinkle black powder coat with silicone bends/couplers -- the good 5 ply stuff used in your intakes.

Thanks everyone for making my daydream solution look less retarded. I would definitely be happy with a hybrid solution with half the couplers and flexible connectivity to the IC.

Maybe Jamie can do a lil R&D with the silicone and make this happen.

Cut the damaged part out and use a coupler. That would defeat the purpose of eliminating couplers, but it would be a very easy fix.
