(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score ATP 3071r swap how to , lenny gets BT fever too alright guys.... i got a big cup of suck it up in hand and time to do the nasty. ill try to add as much as i can ....its a bit demoralizing typing all this shit up and linking pics... but i keep telling myself that it may help others... so here we go. got a great deal from SU Mark on this brand new ATP 3071r iwg the kit comes with AN oil return line.... quicktap boost source nipple for tapping silicone coupler.... AN rear coolant line that leads into a rubber hose for oem installation and a 2.5 silicone coupler. to go with this turbo i decided to buy this slug looking piece from cpe... (big inlet) now lets take a look at the hotside and see what ATP has improved vs the older ATP turbos...(mainly the wg) heres the flapper open (notice the pivot arm is right up to the end of the wg hole, on older models the hole is smaller and u can tell by looking at the pivot arm in reference with the hole) heres the machining done to it.... it goes deeper and doesnt end at a wall on the half moon rather a transition like the end of a shovel if i were to remove material I would perhaps take some from where my finger is blocking to better blend the transition from the exhaust manifold gases flowing into the turbine and side tracking out the wastegate when needed a more aggressive material removal thats it for the first post.... ill keep adding as i troll my photbucket comment or not if u want...doesnt matter people can follow it either way

| Not Ranked : 0 score thanks lenny, your right that its going to help people in the future. especially with all the controversy on the iwg atp turbos. a write up like this could put a lot of things to rest.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score ok next on the list is boost control..... from what i have seen no one with a BT can control boost with oem bc... so I went ahead and bought a hallman pro rx mbc... it comes with a soft fine tuning spring up to 5lbs fine tuning over wg spring pressure.... and a stiffer less fine tuning spring to crank it up to the sky... heres the hardware... in cobb blue (sort of) ok... so here is a shot of the wga... and its adjustable rod... (i believe this turbo comes with a 12-14lbs wg spring.) i set it to the lower end... because if i adjust too much preload the flapper will bind if it ever needs to be extended to 90 degrees from being shut.\ here is also a shot of the rear coolant line provided by ATP.... and this is how it will be routed once in car....the rear one goes over the turbo now one thing we discussed in length is supporting the turbo from underneath. stock the turbo has only 2 solid support anchors... the ex manifold....(top) and the turbo bracket (bottom) .... the dp doesnt really support it since it is only helt to the body by the hangers holding the exhaust pipes. so.... i ordered some thermo tech header wrap.... i also bought from siliconeintakes.com a 90 degree reducer from 2.50 to 2.0 and also a metal insert and finally a straight coupler.... all this will be used because the snout of the turbo (3071r) is actually shorter than the ko4...and the regular coupler i use with my cobb fmic kit simply wont reach. heres the hardware i bought..... put together to show u how much longer it can reach so back to the bracket.... i bought a second bracket to fuck with...... so first thing ill do is notch that section i used a marker on.... this will give me a way to wrap the header wrap around the edge where the bracket will contact the turbo... and provide both support and NOT transmit vibrations.... ill wrap it around here once or two times around.... i also bought some high heat ties....to be able to secure the wrap nicely so it doesnt walk around on me so now for the front coolant line that requires u to bend the oem one to clear the larger compressor.... i had bought a banjo and high temp hose to use instead.... wasnt very happy to see how close the hose comes to the turbine housing.... so we ll get back to solving this in a bit. now back to the other thing we have to modify on the turbo bracket.... the 3071r has a much larger turbine housing than the ko4.... so the bracket will interfere with the fit unless it sits lower..... one way i was considering was to bend it to accommodate.... but instead it was suggested to me i slot drill the holes that go towards the block on the bracket so i can adjust the height of it at will. and heres a pic of the proposed slotting... marked with a marker. now that we r done with that...lets finish up that front coolant line.... bought a banjo with 6 -an fitting.... 2ft steel braided hose with one end 90 degree -6an fitting and one with a straight -6am fitting..female both. also as a last touch i bought a -6an fitting to add to the line...and the other end with a barbed ending to attach to oem hose. heres all 3 lines now attached to the turbo...(only one being re used is the oem oil feed line from the top) anyways.... feel free to ask questions and discuss.... i know we have been talking about this for a while.....but im doing this really for the guys that one day might be encouraged by these pics and words. this was easier than i thought lol nah....came close though ...almost had a cock in my mouth....but then the microwave beeped and i lost track of time afterwards... oh well im hoping to help squash this controversy.... i think its trial and error and if those few of us going atp... can make our cars reliable, powerful and consistently run the same.... then it might open up options for guys that dont want to go ewg and all out shit.

| Not Ranked : 0 score i agree that it is trial and error. massive improvements have been made to the wastegate design already and if its not perfect now you can try your porting that you talked about. driver311 and you are both great examples of how to get this turbo setup properly for a close to plug and play option.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score i am actually not porting anything.... anthony (driver311) had parts that caused him to outflow what mine will be able to do... he had a big maf...creep no cat ...creep older style 3071r.....creep eventually he corrected his issues and does creep....but im not worried about creep myself....i mean all out...sure ewg, t3 housing the whole 9 yards.... but for a plug and play deal....i doubt there is anything better than atp... as long as u realize u wont win any dyno contests..... the price is the ONLY issue i see....cuz these fuckers sure like to charge

| Not Ranked : 0 score If it were me, I would spend 20 minutes with an air grinder and enlarge/smooth the entrance into the flapper with a special focus on open up the radius so the entrance isn't a 90° from the normal exhaust flow. We know that it is marginal with respect to having creep in its current state and it is a shit-ton easier to massage it now than it is to pull it later...

| Not Ranked : 0 score Lenny, another good write up man! FWIW I just remembered this from my install. you will likely need to cut the oil return line. Mine was like 2" too long and there was no way to route it to connect back to the block. If you have ever tried to cut steel braided line without the proper tool...well it sucks! I duct taped the fuck out of mine where I was going to make the cut, and hacked away with a brand new hack saw blade and it actually turned out good. The hard part is getting the SS line back into the fitting and screwed back down.

| Not Ranked : 0 score well I do over look simple things sometimes but i don't think so. you have to come off the turbo with the straight connector and use the 45* or whatever it is to get you to the block. if I tied mine up like a pretzel maybe. Go try to flex that hose...it doesn't move much. Like this: (oh and notice my "modified" OEM water outlet oh and my ghetto bracket:

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score i guess ill find out when i try it..... but seems the curvature of the hose plus being able to swivel the 45 degree end wouldnt present an issue.... hmmmmm i pmed gsrtypo1 he had the 3071 atp kit..ill see if he says he had to modify it... could be a case of "u fail" dano....lol

| Not Ranked : 0 score It certainly could be a "u fail" case but I absolutely did NOT want to have to cut that hose and spent over an hour trying to figure out a way around it. I'll be interested to know if you have to cut yours...ur I mean if Philly has to cut it.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Hell yea Lenny, exited to see how it all works out.. Ive got a IWG 3071 in the works also... Could you provide links to the extra parts you had/wanted to buy to help when others are ready. For a bolt on that comes with lines, at a glance it seems like there are a lot of line modification that needs to be done. Good luck man

| Not Ranked : 0 score Lenny has does a excellent job on this write up so far, and has helped me via pm's...Ill be keeping close eye on how the oil return line fits, if I got to cut it, not gonna fuck around, either get right cutting tool, or take it to machine shop and have them cut it to size. Im really trying to avoid anything ghettoland. As for bracket...think Lennys wrap job will work, Im gonna try what Lex said, and fabricate a bracket for my Cobb Dp to bolt to the stock dp mount location. Good shit guys..keep it up
