(Thread Starter) | Neutral : +3 score THE OFFICIAL INTAKE/ TURBO INLET PIPE THREAD!! Updated 2/2015 by @Inquisitive;! Thank you! Gen2 red air filter $24.06**********THE OFFICIAL INTAKE/ TURBO INLET PIPE THREAD********** NOTE: This is an informative discussion and a resource for gathering information on which route to go (Short Ram Intake, Cold Air Intake). All-in-all it is up to you on which you decide to go with. Abbreviations used on this sticky: Gen1 MS3---> Mazdaspeed 3: 2006-2009 Gen2 MS3---> Mazdaspeed 3: 2010+ Difference between SRI and CAI: According to research and discussions there are inherent pros and cons of both intake systems, but the main difference between a short ram intake and a cold air intake is where the intake gets its air from. A short ram intake sits and the engine bay where the air temps are warmer due to the heat the engine produces while a cold air intake sits away from the engine bay, usually in the front fender where it can suck in cooler air from the outside. Sucking in cool air is important because cool air is denser than warm air, which means cool air molecules are closer together, so more air can fit into a given amount of space. An engine creates power by mixing and compressing air and fuel. The more air you can fit into a cylinder at one time, the bigger explosion you can create which in turn creates more horsepower. NOTE: I've decided to list the filter covers first because I noticed that people have expressed concerns about water penetrating their engines with the cold air intake systems. First, it is HIGHLY unlikely that this will ever be a problem. Rain and water droplets are no problem. The only case that could be a potential threat is if you drove into an extremely deep puddle, submerging the intake head. The car would have to be in the water so that the intake was submerged, and then it would start sucking up water, making your engine hydro-lock. Intake Kits and Battery Trays Intake Kits: SRI, TIP, CAI Battery Trays to accommodate wide Intake Kits ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Intake Kits: SRI, TIP, CAI CAI Cold air is denser than hot air, and will ultimately have more power producing potential. Cold air induction (CAI) provides colder air than SRI / TIPs and can provide 12% more power and torque, but experiences pressure drops associated with the longer tubes used and are prone to easily hydro-locking in deep puddles (MSF wiki). Therefore, SRI / TIPs with air-box are the preferred option. Use a filter cover (CP-E, Outerwears. AMSoil) and / or splash shield (CP-E, Sure) if you are concerned about rain and water droplets, but they will not prevent hydro-lock if your intake is submerged. SRI / TIP Points to consider when improving the intake airflow are the future needs, such as BT for the K04 will most likely fail at some point. Although some members progress through different BTs, perhaps choosing a three inch intake initially will prevent having to replace it again later. The only problem with this course of action is that a MAF calibration must be done, which requires an ECU re-flash. See the “Larger than stock MAF housing” calculation below installation time in this section. TIPs can flow 14% more, but are usually limited by the SRI. The main advantages to TIPs are the reduction of backwash turbulences away from the MAF housing from the blow-by valve and PCV. However, SRI / TIPs allow the turbo to spike more easily. (Cobb) Note that with no other changes, tilting the MAF more than the OEM 15 degrees causes over fuelling with the ECU removing fuel through large negative LTFT and you exceed your previous g/s readings during WOT. MAF recalibration is strongly recommended. Larger than stock MAF housing offers larger cross section for more airflow, but has less cooling to the MAF resistors due to the decreased air velocity. In order to develop a scalar for a larger than stock intake diameter, you must take the (New MAF Cross-Sectional Area) and divide (/) it by the (Stock MAF Cross Sectional Area), which is technically pi * radius squared (Djuosnteisn), but you can actually just take the new diameter squared / old diameter squared (ms3blackmica). Say you decide to upgrade to a 3" intake (76.2mm). The stock MAF housing is 66.5mm diameter (2.61811"). (76.2^2) / (66.5^2) = 1.313 Take 1.313 and multiply it by the entire MAF curve. Now you are ready to start your MAF Calibration. This is only an example for a 3" intake. | Not Ranked : 0 score nicely done. You may want to add a caveat to the Cobb SF intake that states if you do not upgrade at least your RMM, it is very likely that your bracket will break (unless this has been addressed by a redesign that I'm unaware of). Good job!

TIP is a groovy part of the pre-turbo intake system. And something every bolt-on hero should install. Edit - and along with the CAIs you should throw a splash shield in there too. | Not Ranked : 0 score I suggest making a note about the difference between the cp-e nano being for oem MAF sizes while the xcelXL will need a MAF calibration. Pretty much something that will tell people nano is for stock turbo and xcelXL is for BT. Don't need any brownies saying "I installed my cpe xcelXL intake and now my car can barely idle and runs like crap"

| Not Ranked : 0 score Before adding anything, thank you very much for the hard work and personal time dedicated to this thread. One thing of note: -The corksport TIP relocates the breather tube coming off of the valve cover from the maf housing to the TIP (optional), much like the newest Mazda fix for the smoking turbo issue. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Only thing I'd maybe do is move the Element Shield & PreFilter links to the top right after where you mentioned people being scared about sucking up water in a CAI. Makes sense to go there rather than just tacking them at the bottom & not explaining them. Just for the uber-noobers. Looks awesome bro. I have the inert urge to state my opinion that a CAI is irrelevant on a turbo car & that the benefits of an SRI outweigh te CAI on our cars lol. But that's for a different thread. Or idk maybe it is for this thread. Someone argue opposite of me so newbs can make their own opinions based upon MSF's viewpoints. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score yeah i just noticed that too like i said, its personal preference for the new guys. Cant favor CAI or SRI due to the makers/vendors possibly getting pissed for favoritism of one or the other, that way we can ,in the end, just leave it up to the buyer. Its up to the new guys to decide based on facts and reviews on which they would want to purchase. Updated 12/16 - Relocated and added some finesse to the filter cover section

Here are some pics, maybe you can use them in your post at least to let everybody know that they also have a pre-filter option with other intakes than Injen, CP-E or SURE. [/quote] I guess you should also consider listing the MAF housing diameters somewhere for each intake option. This will help people scale their MAF tables a bit just before going on the road for gathering a few logs for a proper MAF calibration.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Installed a Injen cold air with the Hydra shield on my 09 speed 3 and was very simple to install took less than 45 minutes. Theres no need to remove tire or front bumper if you lift car properly and support it easy to remove the splash guards from underneath vehicle. As far as performance gains I can definitely feel a difference in power but not as much as they claim. Went with Injen because of the past good experiences on other vehicles will be installing a TIP next. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score @rfinkle2 I have a question regarding the smoking turbo inlet/valve cover fix and how it relates to replacing the turbo inlet. I got the smoking turbo fix back in august if I replace the stock inlet do you think the turbo would start smoking again (granted the turbo was also replaced in august)? Basically does putting on a shiny sure inlet essentially negate the smoking turbo fix?

The Rotella t6 that everyone uses is a 40 weight oil, and that seems to help quite a bit. | |
