(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Stratified Tune My tune is complete. If anyone is on the fence about having Stratified tune your car all I can say is..........do it! Alex did an awesome job. The car is no screamer, but it is definitely running stronger than before (told by the butt-dyno). I had some knock issues prior to the tune which have been addressed and corrected. The car is even more fun to drive since tuning it. I don't worry about tearing stuff up when going WOT and that is exactly what I was looking for. Alex, a public thanks for the time and understanding given through the stretch of tornadoes that showed up during the tune window. I appreciate it. You run an excellent business!! Thanks again!! Jay

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Here is my first virtual dyno run. I think I entered everything correctly. I was not sure about the smoothing. Some people used 2 others used 3. This is a graph with the smoothing at 2. Hopefully it is relatively accurate because the numbers were better than what I expected. We are going to have some lows in the high 50s and 60s later this week. I am interested to see what that does to the numbers.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score The local PePBoys just put in a small racing section (it would be more interesting if I was driving a Detroit ride). They had a car show and brought in a Dyno. The temp was about 95deg, and the air was sticky as hell (not sure of humidity) so it was hot as a whore on nickel night. I had them pull the Speed. The dude couldn't find a coil so I got no torque readings. I was hoping to get 270 or so so it wasn't too bad. Especially for a DD, 5-door, kid-hauling, grocery getting, small turboed, 4 cylinder. I don't guess they reset the clock because it was in the afternoon (1:30ish).

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score No ice, just one of those fans they use to dry carpet. The dude didn't hold it where it was really facing down on the intercooler (more front on). My first VD numbers were low 300s when I added my body weight and the barmetric pressure. I was expecting it to be around 270ish so that was not too bad. It was not nearly as hot or humid when I used the VD as this time around. I expect them to rise once it isn't so blooming hot and humid. Actually I did not even use the VD before I had the tune done. The AP gave me some crazy numbers LOL!

| Not Ranked : 0 score So far I am happy . Got the baseline map installed and flashed to the car and everything ran well! It felt sluggish on the timing of when the turbo kicked in, but as Lex said, we will work on the timing later . Very happy with how smooth my car is pulling. :-)

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score I had my car tuned back in May/June and it was pulling pretty well. I thought I would log some data and put it into the virtual dyno since the weather has cooled (it pulled 260hp at 96deg and 40% humidity on a Dynojet in July. I have not done any modifications since then and the logs are terrible. The virtual dyno has it at 220hp and 295ft lbs of torque. The KR is crazy. I don't really know where to start. I have filled up at a different station the last few times. I usually get gas at Phillips66 but have been filling up at OnCue. Could their gas be that bad? The last oil change I had them put full synthetic in instead of the usual stealership oil. Other than these two things the only change is the temperature here.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score I am not really sure. I just take it in and have them change it. I kind of assumed what they were doing was cool. Looking back it only costs about $45 so they may be using something other than full synthetic since everything they do is expensive.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Get the receipt and double check bro, that is very important and $45 doesn't sound right for synthetic unless you got a deal Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using tapatalkreplace

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score I am sure they just load it up with whatever Mastercraft (it is also a Ford dealership) oil they pump out of the drum. I would figure the Mazda techs and service advisors would shoot me straight, but seem to have a little more doubt each time I have them look at something. I had it changed somewhere else that was more convenient and had them put the full synthetic in it. It was about $20 more. I have a half tank of the other gas in the car. I will fill it up with Phillips66 gas and see if that helps at all.

| Not Ranked : 0 score It looks like it's the gas. No one can tell for sure unless you refill with the gas you were tuned for or add a gallon of alcohol or E85. And as a side note, if you're into tuning and more power you can't be so negligent about how your car is serviced. If you can't do the oil changes yourself (I can't, and a lot of people can't because they don't have a jack and a place where to do things like this) then at least ask the dealer about the oil they're using and bring in your own oil if they use some shitty oil just to offer cheap service. My dealer asked me to choose between like 3 types of oil they had and when they stopped using the one I initially chose I started to bring in my own oil. I suggest you do the same, using expensive oil and changing it more often is actually cheaper because the engine will not blow or need a rebuild after failing because of the crappy oil it had in it.

| Not Ranked : 0 score The KR isn't horrible, but looks real and is likely attributable to poor gas quality. Event between stations of the same brand of fuel gas quality can be quite different sometimes. I would definitely avoid mom and pop gas stations if possible.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Thanks Mike, It is a chain but probably more on par with 7-Eleven. I will go back to the Phillips gas. I was just kind of caught off guard with the log and the virtual dyno. I had expected the numbers to possibly be up because it is cooler (45deg), but it is only hitting 220hp with descent torque (295). The first one I did after the tune was like 302hp with similar torque @80deg. Can gas make that much difference (all we have here is 91 oct)?

| Not Ranked : 0 score Yes, the gas makes a lot of difference because if it's less resistant to auto-ignition or the front flame is faster then the ECU will reduce the advance timing and that translates into power loss. At that boost I think you should be at like 15 degrees of timing, even 16 on good gas. And you're at only 12. That timing difference means a lot especially in the last 1000-1500rpm of the rev range where the stock turbo can't do much and all the power you can get there is from timing and fueling by maintaining as much as possible the torque curve up. In parallel you should also contact your tuner and ask for an opinion (or mention him here). I worked with @Lex a lot last and this year and pretty much all the time I had the impression that he knew more than me what in condition my car was and because of that he made some of my fears go away at some point when I was just paranoid about insignificant stuff.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Jay, the fuel is the likely cause of the KR. I also notice that your coolant temps are not up to normal operating (above 180) and often when the engine is cold it will be noisier and knock more. I would do several logs to back up that indeed you are seeing real KR and then go with the better brand name gas and see if it's still there. We can certainly touch up the tune. However the KR is very mild at 1* and it's not something dangerous. A touch better fuel should clear this up. Due to your altitude the K04 does tend to struggle with flow so I would take the VDyno logs in the same place you took them last summer for consistency.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Thanks Mituc, Lex tuned mine as well. I have sent an email to him through the Stratified site. I just know most everyone here knows more than I do so I thought I would see if anyone had any ideas.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Thanks Lex (and others), I will use the AP to make sure it is warm enough. I had driven it about 15-20 minutes so I thought it would be good. I will use the 66 gas and do the next log where I did the final tune and dyno runs (it is good and secluded...just farther from the house). I appreciate the help. Go ahead and ignore the email to the site. Thanks again.
