Exhaust on MS3 suddenly loud and vibrating... exhaust?

On sunday as i was driving from a stop light, i suddenly heard a loud exhaust sound and heavy vibration. I figured it was the mustang right next to me but when the mustang was out of range i realized it was coming from my car. It felt like it was coming from right under me. It gets really loud and vibraty with higher RPM's.

There wasnt a CEL and i didnt see any of the exhaust systems falling off or hanging. I dont have my jack/jackstands with me as its at my parents home so i took my phone and started taking videos of the pipes under my car to see if i can visibly locate the problem.

It seems like the pipe after the downpipe ( i think) broke off which is causing the noise and vibration. I checked the exhaust tip and i feel just a little bit of pressure coming out of it.

Is this something I can get rewelded or is it best to replace the whole pipe. Also anyone know which part of the exhaust this is? i

Looks like its the test pipe. Are you the original owner? It looks like someone took the 2nd cat out and replaced it with a test pipe (normal mod).

Probably could be re-welded or just have the shop fit a new pipe in there.

The problem is you took the spring bolts out of the test pipe to catback connection. We have a very stiff exhaust system as it is and those ARE necessary. You broke the flange off of the catback. An exhaust shop may be able to reweld that for you but you need to get the springs back in or it WILL happen again.

Yeah im the original owner. Got a CPE catted downpipe back in 08/09 (only exhaust mod i did).


Been needing to go to the shop to replace a strut... hopefully they fabricate.

Thanks. The installs was so long ago that I don't remember if I had springs included or where it would be.

Best bet is to call Mazda, buy new ones, and bring those to the shop with you when you take it in for repair.

Took it to a muffler shop this morning. Got the pipe and flange rewelded for $50. If it happens again I'll look to get the springs with Mazda like djohn suggested.

I just couldn't wait any longer cause driving with the loudness and vibes was unbearable.

You can still buy the springs and install them. Probably would take about 30 minutes at most.

Prob will just got to shop around. Stealership wanted $160 for fkn springs.


It's not a pretty looking weld but as long as it holds up til I get a new car.

Holy shit that's a lot! I got them from my local dealer for I think $40 or so?

I had the same thing happen to my old escort gt. exhaust shop fixed pipe and put in new springs and bolts for $45... 160 is a rip.

I'll prob call the another dealership tomorrow and see if it's cheaper... Or at least get the part number. Maybe there could be a generic exhaust pipe spring available.

Thanks. Weird how the part is only available via Mazda 6 parts catalog and not the mz3/ms3. Makes me suspect that springs were never included cause I shouldn't have missed it.

CPE provides non Spring bolts for the install of their DP. I have the same thing on my car with their DP. No springs here

Ah I knew I wasn't going crazy. Bolt with spring is prob at my parents house where ever I stored the stock downpipe.

You should put the springs on. Its part of how the exhaust is designed to deal with the motor moving in the engine bay. Much more important on fwd due to the more significant change in angle vs rwd.
