Default Main bolt torque procedure

Hey guys,

Anyone here built an engine with the OEM main bolts?

The assembly manual indicates to oil the bolts before torquing. My question: Should i completely submerge the bolts in oil? As in threads and bottom of the head of the bolt? Reason I ask is because i am aware that oil on the threads will change torque specs and I don't want to screw up this part by over/under torquing. Also, I did some reading and heard that the OEM mains should be ok for a sub-400 Hp application. Anyone able to confirm this?

oem main aren't a problem for 400....rods are more sensitives and head bolts...

You either don't want to have thread friction to limit clamping force and you don't want the hole to have oil in the hole that limit the bolt from going down...
I use oil but i sink the bolt in it and let it drop or wipe any excess. i don't put any oil in the thread hole...This worked fine for few engines and i did see my machinist using special grease where it was critical....

Maybe @MSMS3 can comment about the right technique
