Default The Official Short Shifter Thread

***** The Official Mazdaspeed Forums Short Shifter Thread *****

DISCLAIMER: This is an informative thread and a resource for gathering information on which form of shifter you may want (Short Shift Plate, Full Replacement, or just a simple stem). All-in-all it is up to you to decide on which form to go with.

So you've decided that the factory shifting assembly is not up to your standard of performance. The following information will give you insight into what aftermarket parts you can buy for your specific model vehicle to transform the feel and performance of your shifter assembly. The Mazdaspeed platform has many different ways to adjust the height, distance of throw, and feel of the transmission while driving. We'll start at a very simple install and work up to the hardest level.

***** First Generation Mazdaspeed3 *****

Short Shift Plates

The first way of adjusting the distance of the gear change (see: the "throw") is to add a SSP, an abbreviation for Short Shift Plate. The name is almost an exact description of the piece. A solid piece of metal with 4 holes in it that sits on top of the transmission housing connecting the linkage.

There are currently 3 Companies who manufacture Short Shift Plates for the First Gen Mazdaspeed3.

1. James Barone Racing
Price: $80.00
The Stage 1 Kit From Jamie Includes both the Plate AND a counterweight. A stage 2 kit can be ordered which includes base bushings for $95.00

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Corksport Mazda Performance
Price: $69.00
The SSP from CorkSport includes a Counterweight

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Base Bushings

At the base of every First Gen MS3 gear lever there are 4 rubber grommets that hold the shifter cage to the floor board. These bushings give the side-to-side movement of the shifter a very soft feel. Upgrading to solid aluminum Base Bushings improves the feel of the shifter when navigating throughout the gears.

1. James Barone Racing
Price: $25.00

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. CorkSport Mazda Performance
Price: $39.00

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. TWM Performance
Price: $34.95

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shift Counterweights

At the opposite end of the gear linkage lies the counterweight. A counterweight provides a balance at each end of the linkage and also provides improved shift response while also ensuring the transmission stays in gear during aggressive driving.

1. James Barone Racing
Price: $20.00
Color options include Red, Blue, and the pictured Black below

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. TWM Performance
Price: $49.95
While pricey, the TWM Counterweight is the only weight on the market which can be adjusted to personal preference.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. COBB Tuning
Price: $25.00
The simplest design and only one option to choose from.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replacement Stems

The gear lever itself within the cabin is capable of being shortened. A 30% reduction in the distance of the throw can be seen when adding an actual short shifter. Two companies currently manufacture a short shifter for the platform.

1. COBB Tuning
Price: $275.00
COBB's Shifter Features double adjustments for both Shift knob height and Throw Length

To view how to install your COBB Tuning Double Adjustable Short Throw Shifter Please See This Thread: COBB Tuning Mazdaspeed3 STS Install
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. TWM Performance
Price: $249.95
The TWM features no adjustment in throw or knob height, it is one size only.

To view how to install your TWM Performance Short Shifter Please See This Tutorial courtesy of Krystm's Garage
Tutorial: Short Throw Shifter Install
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Full Replacement Systems

If you're feeling an overhaul of your complete shifting package, TWM Performance is currently the only company for our platform who manufactures a direct replacement system.

1. TWM Performance
Price: $449.95
The Full Replacement System from TWM includes everything except a Counterweight and Shorter Shift Plate

The TWM features no adjustment in throw or knob height, it is one size only. (Stage 2 Shown)

Full Replacement Systems

Unfortunately, no full replacement system is currently offered for the MazdaSpeed6 platform as the shifter assembly is much more complex compared to that of the Speed3.

This forum has quite the history with E4 Performance.

If it's in the forums best interest, I'll be glad to throw that in tomorrow.

@Raider

I looked on E4's website. There STS isn't listed anymore so I'd be a little skeptical about listing it if you can't find it.

They have their counterweight shown so I'll add that to the list in the counterweight section.

How is the shift plate? I never even knew that there was such a thing. Only thought that you have to replace the whole gear box and stick if you wanted to reduce the throw. Anyone have any recommendations on which brand and if the short shift plate is worth it?

Hell yeah, looks like I'm waiting to get one.

You guys recommend stacking this with your SSP?

It works very well with our SSP. Since the shifter and the shift plate are adjustable the settings are almost infinite.

The jbr short shift plate and shifter bushings don't specify the year while the ones for cork sport do. What are the differences between first and second gen?

There is no difference between the shift plate kits or the shifter bushings for the GEN 1 or GEN 2 MS3.

Can the OP be updated? The pictures are missing or out of date. All of the pictures on our website have been re-shot. Also some prices have changed. I can help if need be.

Default Getting Rid of Shifter Slop

Hey All,
I am using a Cork Sport shifter and aluminum base bushings. Can anyone recommend a way to get rid of the slop when in gear? The slop I mean is when the shifter is in gear there is a lot of play in the shifter. Will the plate help or do I have to go with a full TWM replacement?

Hello:

I don't see a lot of activity here lately but hoping for some feedback. Is there an actual difference between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 short shift plates? I have only ever seen one listing (nothing specifying a certain year or gen)?

And I don't see any mention of the Sure Short Shift Plate (https://www.suremotorsports.com/product-p/sure0513.htm). Has anyone used that option?

I have heard that short shift plates can cause transmission or linkage damage. Is that the case or is that more incorrect installation?

From what I gather, Sure gets shit on for a lot of stuffs. Read up on that. If you search on websites for short shift plates, cross reference the years and compare part numbers. Fuck being lazy.

Best bet is to buy an actual short shifter as oppose to running a plate. I am rocking a Damond plate. JBR makes a real sweet short shifter that I keep eyeballing to replace my plate.

We have replacement short shifters for both the GEN 1 & 2. They are very reasonably priced too at $125 and $155 respectively.

That's what I figured, and why I am researching. Anyone have one they have used for years that can let us know how it is going?

I will also check out the JBR short shifter.

I like the look of your short shift kit, if I add the base bushings to the kit is there anything else I would need for a complete set up?

A shift knob is icing on the cake. Most do it.
