Is it condensation that is getting into the block or in the CC itself..?Is it normal to get this much water, fuel in the CC?When I check my oil with the dipstick I dont see any of this on the stick and I dont see it in the oil when I change my oil.

this is MUCH more common in colder temperatures. i had an OCC on my old car and it contained tons of crap (mostly water) in the winter and barely anything in the summer.

IMHO the condensate isn't something to worry about. i think it's mostly because the water in the air condenses in the cold OCC, which can be increased by a baffled OCC with more cool surfaces.

if you run the car long enough at full operating temperature, the water and (some of the) gas in the oil evaporates out and gets caught in the OCC or gets run through the engine. as i said, the colder temps equate with a colder OCC, which may make it the ideal place to condense water.

looks gross. just looks like basic condensation, fuel, and oil though. that water is the reason why you're supposed to warm the engine up before you change the oil, so the water evaporates off.

btw, the stuff in the jug probably looks particularly nasty because that container isn't designed for oil, so the oil will start to eat the plastic, which will collect on the surface. eventually the thing will eat through and dump everything out somewhere. id switch to a used oil container or something before that becomes a big mess.

yeah i drain about a cup over that crap out every week. its mainly condensation that forms in the can from the heating and cooling but also from the combustion process there is a good about of water vapor in that.

What does this mean exactly? Is it totally necessary to have a CC even if most of it is condensation?

THe reason for the CC is to try and limit the amount of oil getting into the intake mani and causing smoke.THere is some oil in the CC but there seems to be more water at this point because of the weather Im guessing.

The OCC is intended to do exactly what its name implies - catch oil. Oil vapor hanging out in the crank case and PCV system is generally routed through the intake and burned off in the engine, which makes the EPA happy. Yet the oil can reduce the octane rating of the fuel being burned in the engine, which can cause results such as knock.

Enter the OCC, which catches the oil vapor before it gets to the intake. This does NOT make the EPA happy unless you take what the OCC has 'caught' and dispose of it properly.

OCC's catch a lot more water in colder temperatures, which is totally irrelevant as to how the engine runs. My opinion is that the water vapor floating around in the crank case/PCV system remains as vapor until it condenses at the OCC due to the OCC's lower temperature relative to the engine. This water vapor does not pose as much a threat to the engine as oil does.

Guys how many miles are you running the car to generate that amount of discharge in your catch can?

I just installed a Saikou Michi can this past weekend and don't have a feel yet for how often to drain. I live in Florida so the temperature is pretty warm and dont really put a lot of miles on the car maybe 10k a year.

Ed.

i'd recommend checking it every tank for awhile to see what's going on. since you're in warmer temps, i'm not sure i'd worry a whole lot. but, if it's cold enough, you'll have a fair amount of material in your OCC.

in the winter, i prolly checked it every 500-1000 miles and had approx. 5oz of crap in my OCC. in the summer, though, i had basically nothing (but note that Saikou's OCC's don't drain completely due to the drain plug config.).
