Default 3" intake with 3.5" MAF housing

I don't think my plans will leave enough room for a 3.5" intake, so I was thinking a 3" intake pipe can transition to the 3.5 MAF, so long as the distance from the MAF to the transition is adequate enough to not disturb the flow distribution.

Curious to hear if this has been done before.

If you don't have an intake now, I don't understand the issue of getting a full 3.5 inch now... If its about space, I know some guys were just using full 3.5 inch silicone intakes, but I'm sure that still gets pretty damn close to the ECU. Or just relocate the ECU and keep the same battery.

I would recommend either buying 1 or the other. If you get a 3 inch now, and need to go bigger, then sell the 3 inch and buy the correct one later.

MS6. ECU in the cabin where it belongs. Much to my dismay, the battery will be moving to the trunk, but I'm filling that space with something equally large. I've read the 3" intakes fit with the stock size battery. But my concern is that I'll be on the edge of maxing out a 3" MAF. Even though the JBR is 3" ID vs OD like others.

Maybe on a CS, I don't honestly know though. But definitely not on stock turbo.

I'm having a hard time picturing how you would put a 3.5 MAF on a 3 in intake? I would think that it would cause the air to not flow well and read accurately, much like not having an air straightener.

For all the stock turbo haters - My K04 loves it's 4 in intake :-)

Stock size Group 35 battery is about 6.9" wide. The intercooler I plan on making is only 6" wide. Napkin math tells me a 3.5" intake "should" fit. I was just hoping to use a 3" intake for more wiggle room, but without the MAF limit of the 3".

The below reducer coupler should attach a 3" pipe to a JBR 3.5" MAF. But if a 3.5" intake might fit, this thread and the below link are moot.

Mocked up my W2A intercooler with foam board. Looks like there is room for a 3.5" intake after all. Used a roll of paper gasket maker as a stunt double for the intake pipe.
