Default -30 Celsius and Stock Turbo

Hey all,

I live in Alberta, and last couple of days have been quite cold...and my Mazdaspeed6 hasn't been liking it!

First of it stutters during cold starts, to a point it turns of 2 seconds later, and I have to hold rpms at 2.5 to keep it going for a minute.

Secondly, it stuttered when running yesterday, rpms started falling, as if it was running out of gas.....I smelled a burning smell in the cabin and engine bay... almost as if plastic melting.... but I saw no smoke...and the car turned of.

10 Minutes later, the car started and ran properly ever since....until today...the rpms started falling again when stopped on a stop sign, same smell again.... but this time it stayed on... the burning smell is in the exhaust now, constantly!

My question is.... is it possible the turbo is going? burning oil when stopped? or am I looking at something different?

Thanks in advance!

Hasn't been quite that cold in NY, but I did have a similar issue. It wound up being a cracked coil pack, moisture got in because of the heating cycle and allowed it to arc. Not implying it's your issue but sounds similar, any CEL?

My car takes a second to start as well, but once it does its alright... So it may just be you. Have you tried cleaning your MAF?

Try to get some spark plugs in a hotter heat range, but for some reason I dont think its cold related.

I just checked and my coolant seems quite low!!! So im kinda fearing a head gasket might have gone?

Also today is only -14 (T-shirt timeee), and its no longer smoking as much of the white smoke, nor is there a melting smell to it.

Another thing I noticed lately, and I know winter weather isnt helping, but all I am getting per tank is around 300km! Is it just me?

If you have a tuning solution like an AP, then you can increase your idle RPM tables for low temp to keep it running.

I don't think I'd be able to afford 91 octane anywhere in BC.

Maybe you should invest in an electric block heater.

Do you have an OCC? If so, that might be frozen. Or PCV frozen. Try putting parking in a warm garage. GL.

Sorry for the late reply guys.. Mine was the purge valve. It would start and then stall out and it would do this two or three times before running okay. Also the exhaust would pop when cold idling.
I ordered a new one from Mazda and no issues.
No CEL either.
