For all of those with BNR turbos..

How are you all liking it?
My turbo is smoking like crazy and its really making me not want to drive the car. Not only because Ive been driving the bike, but also because it really pisses me off when it starts to smoke. Dealers in my area are not mod friendly, and I honestly think that any fix i a temporary bandaid so I'm really considering stepping up to the BNR turbo. I don't want to demos and then take it to the dealer, I don't have time for that. Plus the smokey turbo gives me another reason for an upgrade.

For the people who already have a BNR turbo:
1.) What bnr stage turbo do you have?
2.) and How do you like it?
3.) Do you wish you went with something else?

These are only a few questions I have, I probably won't be doing this for a few months, mostly because being in Texas, there are really only a few days I'll have to drive the car. Most of the time I'll be on the bike.

Any and all answers would be greatly appreciated.

might as well go big turbo and buy a atp kit from edgeautosport. your gonna spend about the same for the same reliability and more performance

I stil haven't decided which route I want to go. If I decide to not even worry about the performance, and go for a straight fix, the BNR would only be 900, stage 3 would be 1200. 1700 dollars for the gt28 in my opinion is a lot more. 500 bucks is quite a bit of money.
I am not interested in squeezing every ounce of power out of the engine. I don't ever plan on having to build it, and don't want to press my luck with making more power than I need.

In your case I'd probably do a stage 1 since you just want a better turbo without the crazy power gains.

I would only buy a BNR stg3. Even if you're not after big gains, the cooler charge temps alone will increase reliability and reduce possibility for knock.

for 1650 i can get you a gtx series turbo or the regular gt for 1550. let me know man they are a breeze to install and imo increase daily drive-ability and reliability

you can run tmic for now without a problem. plus the weather is cooling down somewhat.

Bluestreak was running bt with an upgraded tmic...

Jacksonms30 is making good power with stock intake and exhaust manifold.

stage 3 bnr looks decent, but yeah, at that point i'd just get a gt3071

I really do appreciate all of your input. I will do a lot more research and wait until around the time Ill be buying which will most likely be early next year and see what I can find for sale. It seems as if the general consensus is although the BNRs are good, they're just a little expensive compared to ATP's offerings.

I recently had this same decision as my stock K04 bit the dust.

The only BNR worth getting IMHO is the S3. These turbos can support ~380 WHP and drop in quite nicely.

I have tuned a BNR S2 to the max and it cannot support hardly any more flow than the stock turbo (just not worth it since the S3 is only $100 more).

However, since the GTX series ATP kits can be had for ~$400 more it makes them a very attractive option.

I elected to go with the GTX3071 kit.

I really am not too crazy going for power, honestly if I could get a stock k04 that wouldn't ever smoke, Id just go that route, so I'm really thinking the stage 3 is what I wanna get.

If you just want a K04 that doesn't smoke get the S1. It basically is a K04 with a different compressor and coated hot side.

I am also looking at getting the S3 from BNR, only problem I got is tuning around Chicago/ILL. I want the engine to stay together at WOT lol and I've only messed with ATR 2x, definitely not enough to tune my own car...

Just follow Abilor's tuning guide. It breaks ATR down very nicely...

Got BNR S3, it is a great turbo, spools identical to stock turbo, doesn't smoke, bolts on into the stock location, uses all stock hookups, gobs of torque, and made 350 awhp. Get one.

It spools ~300-500 rpms later than stock, but faster than any other BT. Full boost is still < 3000 RPMs from a 4th gear roll.

I got the BNR, I am happy with it and don't regret not going bigger, but it meets my goals.

I am very familiar with the S3 after my own tuning experience so I can get you up and running with it. It's a long list to get a "Perm" tune right now, but there is no shortage of people that can help you out and teach you in the process.

You could also talk to phate about tuning if you want someone local to do it proper on the rollers. He has helped several people up here with their tunes and made a ton of power on stock turbo w/e85.

ATR isn't really that tricky though. Spend a lot of time reading on here and testing things out for yourself.

Because I'm really not too interested in power, I'll be getting the stage 3, but leaving the manifold and stuff alone. I figure the stage 3 will give me a little more oomph, for only 300 dollars more than a stage1. I really only care about not smoking because that just pisses me off, but 300 bucks for a little more power makes me happy. I also figure I'll try to schedule some sort of cobb austin tuning, if that's even possible. Im only about an hour and a half away so it shouldn't be a problem getting up there to do it. Since there seems to be plenty of offers o help out with tuning, I'll probably just throw someone else's map who has similar mods and a stage 3 and drive it up to austin with that, not going into boost. It shouldn't be a huge problem. Hell, since my brother lives in Austin I might just install the turbo there and go to Cobb from there.

Once again I do appreciate everyones help. Seems as if the BNR's are great for budget minded people with realistic expectations.

I would much rather have a SAFE and moderately powerful setup in the longrun, and getting her tuned with rollers would be totally up my alley, I'd rather spend the $$ than fuck something up like some goofy ass table in ATR I neglected to change/modify. I'm not all about the E85 tuning as of yet, as she's a DD and im not going to play games looking for e85 pumps, just gonna stick to 93oct for now, but I will definitely keep ya posted if I'm going the S3 BNR route if the valve cover fix doesn't work for my smokey k04. Does phate have a shop?

Agh this Saturday count me out I'm working, but I will be contacting Phate and Nator IL pages if tuning is needed IF I go BNR route. Tomorrow is install day for the revised valve cover kit from mazda-parts.com. I'm just going to change the valve cover first, and see if it's fixed, then move onto the revised shitty plastic TIP. I really dont wanna give up my nice corksport TIP
