So he hasn't done anything to help fix the ones with the poor quality design? I am only making assumptions based on what I am reading in this thread. I would think he would have a kit to fix this issue for the guys that have the older design.

you can send the old ones back and he'll put the new setup on it. dunno how shipping is handled though. that too was covered. it seems someone here also had an issue with the new setup though according to Himurax. I think it's best that any of us who run the bnrs3 should just go ahead and check it for peace of mind though.

Ya that might be a small reason for my attitude as well.

Ok got ya. Cost me $30 to ship mine down to him from PA. Fucking ridiculous.

Nice, I think I had a good idea buying all the little things/supporting mods for a BT build and waiting till the last minute to pick what turbo/intake. I'm glad I didn't seal my fate one way or the other yet.

I'm in the process of buying a used K04 and I guess I can sit on it until this stuff gets hammered out, already seeing a bunch of possible solutions in this thread but may go GTX2867 if things go south. That's why this forum is teh titz.

@TurboGsxr600; your turbo's CHRA failed. Did any bolts come out? This is regarding bolts coming out of the exhaust housing.

I know you're very sour about this turbo but there's no reason to muddy the waters here unless you had the specific failure discussed in this thread.

At first it would be nice if he would answer my emails. I still have warranty but it seems that Bryan doesn't care about this. I would prefer that he send a fix to me because I live in Germany, shipping turbo back and forth would else cost me hundrets of dollars including tax.
Tomorrow I will drop the turbo and fix the problem by myself.

I don't know if I would ever recommend somebody buying this turbo, after he doesn't care about customer service. To me its one of the most important things after quality.

I had the same issue. What sounded like a terrible exhaust leak and after searching every inch of pipe I had I took it to a friend I have at Mazda to help. He found a bolt off the bracket. Brian was great for me (granted his shop is ~2 miles from my house but always had been great) and gave me an assortment of bolts to get it plugged. I ended up using some thread seal and made sure all of them were snug. Not a problem since. I dont think I would let this deter me from getting one, espically if the design change fixed it but even if not just check the bolts before install.

Username: jdw1
Mileage on BNRS3 turbo: ~15-20k
What was the failure (which bolts backed out, broken, other?): not sure, one on the bracket
Boost level you are running: ~20psi
Are you using the bottom supporting bracket bolted to the block?: Hell if I know
How is the car driven (street, hard, tracked, etc): Street DD but I beat on it some times
Did you retorque the exhaust bolts at any time prior to failure?: yes
Does your turbo have any locking washers on these bolts?: no
How did you fix it?: new bolt and thread seal

Hello all!

Sorry I haven't been here in a long while. I saw this problem with the K04's we were doing with the Cobalt SS units. After 2 calls we decided the solution couldn't wait if there was a potential problem with the bolts backing out. We started cutting these bolt retainers out of stainless. They simply go between the bolt and the thicker clamp plate. Once you torque the bolt, you fold the shim over and it keeps the bolts from vibrating loose.

We started doing the shims in the latter part of last year. At about the same time we had changed the turbine shaft and compressor wheel to the newest version.

Garrett did this same thing with diesel applications.

So if you have this problem, don't hesitate to call and ask for the shim set. I will send it to you for free.

Thank you for your support!

Bryan called me earlier and said that the failure was from an error during assembly. He received my turbo today and already had it fixed and ready to be shipped back to me. Needless to say I am extremely happy with the way he handled the issue.

Hey @Bryan@BNR;

Can we send in multiple K04's for more credit towards a BNR turbo?

Right now extra cores are welcome! I can give you $125 credit for every extra K0422-881 or -882 core.

I am however in the process of making compressor housings and turbine housings. The new compressor housings will have the outlet set up like the HT18 housing I use, but the wastegate boost souce and wastegate will be set up like the stock one. Bigger barb/smaller barb for use of the factory boost control solenoid. This will be available probably around July.

Production is still happening. We are trying to get away from the core exchange system, that way no one has to send in a core, it will be a brand new unit. We are still eight months away from getting rid of the core exchange system.

Awesome idea, that was the only hassle I was worried about, but was prepared for the exchange anyway.

So we have to pay before the core or do you give leeway as far as me sending a couple in and them getting inspected before payment or what? Anything I can do to ease the initial hit to my account will keep the wife off my back.

Are the wheels and chra going to change?

Are the exhaust housings going to bolt to the oem engine bracket?

Also is price going to change?

I require a turbo on build up now. As for payment, it is not required until completion. I can do a couple payments if requested.

Wheels will be the same, the exhaust housings will bolt in and have all the mounting locations for engine brackets as well as the factory heat shield mounting locations. Price may change slightly. There will be a stage 2 back in the line up for the mild applications.

Yes it will interchange. The stock turbine housings crack pretty easily and some crack from the inside-out which are not usable. Your housing is fine from the pictures I saw through email.

Price for new housing only?

Maybe will be a nice upgrade if old K04 housing brakes completely

I bought a K04 from someone who went big turbo. So looks like I will be able to get this sent in the next couple months for a stage 3. Just have to get it done before my first kid gets here, otherwise diapers will destroy my car parts fund, and wife will turn nagging up to 11.

Sorry to post a bit OT, I tried searching through tapatalk but didn't find anything... Sorry if it's already been posted, but what is the FWHP & FWTQ that the stage 3 BNR can generate on a built block?

If you drive it hard down low you can definitely be in the 450+ ft lbs but power wise with flow modifications and alcohol to enhance octane you're looking at 400-420whp.

I would like to keep the A/R the same. In my opinion 400 WHP is the key. Thats where the engine seems to be at its breaking point. If you go bigger, you lose powerband and the streetability goes down the tubes.

I plan on making the turbine housing thicker in some areas. Where they typically crack on the outside and then where the CHRA mounts, I will make that flat surface larger so I can put larger bolts to hold the CHRA. Also the wastegate area will be reconfigured to be more efficient.

I can sell the turbine housings seperate, but we are a long way from seeing them in production.

I agree that for a 2871 the turbine is probably a good size.

It would be great to see a vband chra to exh housing connection.

In terms of wastegate the way it is right now is pretty spot on. No creep from what I see unless catless and even then it's only up to 20psi or so.

I have an update on my BNR leaking. Yesterday I swapped out the BNR turbo for the GTX3071 and what I found on the BNR was that some of the bolt threads on the compressor side were stripped. One of the threads almost came fully out with the bolt. Almost 4 months with a boost leak is finally over, but now what should I do to fix the bnr?
