Default Corksport TIP rubbing?

I searched quite a bit on this topic and didn't find much so this may be a stab in the dark.

I've had my Corksport TIP installed on my car for almost a year now. When I was installing it I was unable to make it fit so that the TIP didn't touch the ECU cover. At the time I contacted Corksport and was told that if I installed it correctly there wouldn't be any rubbing, so I wrestled with it for a while and got it so that it was barely touching and called it good. A while ago, a friend of mine with the same Inlet removed his and found that his had severe rubbing (worse than mine) and a flat spot had been worn into his TIP as a result. After seeing the damage to his TIP I decided to grab a flashlight and take a look at mine. I attached a photo showing the damage, constant engine motion appears to be wearing a flat spot on the inlet. I emailed and spoke on the phone with Kelly @ Corksport and she was very nice about the issue but claimed that she hadn't heard of this being widespread and implied that the damage was due to incorrect installation.

Admittedly, my sample size is small, but my friend and I have had the exact same issue and neither one of us are total derps (at least we'd like to think we aren't). Anybody else having this issue?

I have to same issue, my tip is backed all the way up as close to the turbo as I can get. The bracket didn't even line up with the stud where it's supposed to secure. Mine rubs on the white plastic though.

This is kind of what I was afraid of, though I made every effort to get it as close as possible. At one point I even put a good scratch on the inlet by shoving it up against the turbo and getting metal to metal contact. I really don't think I could get it any closer than that.

I've gotten the same rubbing and wear from the Corksport tip.. I recall reading several posts when I got mine way back that complained of the same rubbing issue.

Same here, I even bought the cold air box and that doesn't line up with the holes on the front panel in the engine bay so I ditched it.

So I guess those of you that have the same issue aren't too worried about it? Maybe I'm asking too much, but I kind of like my parts to fit correctly. Even the $100 ones.

Mine has rubbed through the powdercoat, I guess I'm not too worried about. I'll try to get a pic if it warms up and I remember.

You need to slide the tip into the silicone coupler more. I had the corksport tip before my cpe tip and it never rubbed the ecu cover.

also make sure the top bracket is tightened down on the stud. or the top bracket may have gotten a little bent so you can bend that if that helps.

in any event, corksport will be sure to take care of you.

Same here on my 6... rubs on my battery/battery strap though. It's installed correctly and as snug as it can get.

Mine too. I also picked up their FMIC/SRI/TIP kit and had 2 welds in the TIP leaking, 2 hole in welds on 2 different pipes leaking and a slightly warped BPV flange.

Ouch. I would think twice about using their parts in the future if I was in your situation. Their CBE and RSB fit perfectly, I'm just disappointed in this TIP.

As many others have suggested, I'm going to attempt to re-fit it this weekend in hopes of getting a tighter seal at the turbo. I'll take pics.

mine came close to rubbing, so i put industrial velcro loop on the ecu cover and it has prevented wear on the tip.

These things happen when producing products. It can't be perfect all the time. I got it all fixed... except the TIP rubbing. As far as the front mount welds, a little JB Weld did the trick. Ordered the DP a couple of weeks ago... back ordered with a "2 week" wait. Should ship on the 15th.

IMO, the CS is the best fitting tip. The others are too close to the block on the other side.

The lack of room @ that particular spot is exactly the reason for Mazda's pancake design.

tddvrrn's idea will keep you from doing damage to either the ecu cover or the tip itself.

I am the other 'derp' that Pseudo is referring to...

Here's a pic of mine installed, taken from where the battery box/ECU resides...the damage is pretty significant! It was worn flat at the lower spot, nearest the turbo.

Clearly there is an issue. I was shipped a replacement TIP under warranty, but was told a similar response by Kelly that she had not heard of this before. Some of your suggestions (tddvrrn) sound great, as I had similar ideas, but dirt will still get lodged in the velcro (or whatever you use), and damage will be the end result on the TIP as the engine twists under load.

There was an interesting end result after installing the replacement I received. Just like the first install, I made sure that I was buttoning up everything nice and tight, expecting the same problem. Pseudo and I had installed the original TIP together on my car. Being aware of his clearance issue at that time, we made sure we had made everything nice and tight. But after installing the battery box with the new TIP in place, the difference was significant! I took everything back off, as I needed to see what, if anything, was different. Because I too was told that I had installed it incorrectly, but did not believe that this was true. There was clearly a size difference on the replacement TIP! I laid them both on a table, weighted the long end down, and took a picture of the height difference of the bend that goes to the turbo. It's about a 1/2"! This is all that is needed to give the proper clearance to the ECU. I returned the original TIP to Corksport with pictures and sent an email as well. CS acknowledged the receipt of the old TIP, but I have not received any response in regards to why the two TIP's are different in size.

Just some food for thought...

Completely removed and re-installed my TIP this afternoon while taking photos. The damage is more extensive than just scratched powdercoat, but not as bad as the damage in the post by @mr.panec

I don't think this is the issue. As you can see from the photo below of the silicone coupler, there is only a very small 1/4" line of grime. I can't get them any closer together because of the size difference between the two openings. But I tried anyway, @mr.panec supervised and agreed that the pipe was as far in the coupler as it would go.

Top bracket was/is tight and doesn't look bent, photo attached for reference. Bending the bracket to pull the TIP in more wouldn't be possible, as there is zero clearance on the other side of the pipe.

Reinstalling everything paying very close attention to getting the pipe as far in the coupler as possible and tightening the bracket bolt down as much as possible got me no additional clearance at all. I was able to get a very small amount of extra clearance by loosening the leftmost battery bracket bolt and pushing in the ECU cover before tightening this bolt back down. I doubt that extra clearance will prevent the pipe from rubbing, but it helps. This part just doesn't fit right, bottom line.

tl;dr Reinstalled the TIP using suggestions by members, no change, still rubs.

I had a different rubbing issue with Sure TIP/SRI

Didn't want to rotate clamp and make it a bitch to get to later...

So reflective tape ftw.

Clamp rubbed completely through the stock black electrical tape stuff though.

Glad as hell it didn't damage a wire.

Silicone FTW I guess, that clamp area is the farthest out the intake goes from the inlet.

A little off topic here. But you could just wrap a piece of radiator hose with zip tie around the white plastic housing and ecu cable.

I wouldn't worry about it. Corksport will take care of you.

Another suggestion would be to relocate the ecu with double stick tape to the fuse box cover. = ) But seriously, I may actually end up doing that with 3.5" jbr intake.

Mine rubbed as well on my 6. It fit tight up against the engine and the battery tray still rubbed on the other side. I had to modify the battery tray a bit to give me clearance, then tweek the mounting bracket of the TIP a bit to get it off the engine.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics of the modified battery tray would you? I drilled the screw holes on the bottom out a little bit so I could mount it further away from the pipe. Didn't help much.

It might be worth the hassle of reversing the clamp to the harder to reach position just to prevent damage to the wires.

That's exactly what I did. I drilled the one over so far that I had to cut a large part of one of the washers off of the bolt so it would tighten flush. Then I bent the bracket just a little on the TIP so I would have a little clearance on both sides.

Hello All.

I've got a similar rubbing problem with the corksport intake, where the rubber coupler between the TIP and the MAF housing rubs on the white ECU wire harness. The ECU harness has a sharp corner and really does some damage to the rubber coupler. I've tried to tape it up with electrical tape, in one hour of driving the tape was torn though.

I'm going to try some heavier tape tomorrow. It seems to me the best idea would be just to rotate the angled couple until it Isn't close, but there wasn't enough of an angle to make a difference.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Matt

$10 fix. Buy a peddle pad and zip ties, then fashion the pad to go around the harness and zip tie it. Five min fix for me.

Another great idea, Thanks KILLER_VIZ. I've already installed bigriver's heater tubing fix. If it does not work out, I will try yours next.

I have this problem too with a COBB inlet hose and it is worrysome to me. I tried pushing things back but it is all pretty snug in there. Does anyone know of a tape I can use or some sort of padding to prevent this from happening?

Here is a pic of mine:

Ahh sorry, I never really look at the thread dates when I am browsing the forums. Some of the solutions involve tying down some cables or pushing the TIP further in. However mine is pretty far in and there is no cable running since it's up against the ECU box. Just wondering if anyone had suggestions on tape or foam padding.
