"DEMI" IC mister idea EASY!!

Thanks Demi for the cool idea, i bought the stuff last night $60 thought id start working on it this morning about an hour done! it mists i tested it the only thing i have to do is tie down the misters to my ets and mount the resivour, this is a super esay cool mod for sure, thos back proch misters cool your back porch but now they me cooling my TMIC!!! I'll post m,ore pics later when i finish.

yeah for sure i'm at work i'll finish it off tonight, i was just toying with it this morning i'll do a more detailed wite up, i didnt think it would be such an easy install..lol

sweet im excited for this. has anyone thought of essentially just using the windshield washer system for this same goal?

it may work but this is super cheap and easy you just get a switch $4, wire $5, universal wiper washer pump $17, reivour $8, crimps and grounds for the wire $4, the mister tube $14.

hey I was just wondering does anybody think there could be side affects like rust over time or water leaking doewn by the spark plugs? I know on the evos 'and stis they used to thave these prob fine just thought id ask

I didnt want to rain on your parade but your plugs are right beneath there. I know I wouldn't want to have them surrounded by water cause you never know. Subies get away with in on there top mount cause the spark plugs aren't top feeds right?

I was wondering about this, I dont know about the subies, but it is a very fine mist and im only using 3 mists instead of demi 5. i messeage Demi about this but he hasn't messeged back. That valve cover gets real hot though doesnt it, i will try to see if water get down by the plugs..

i just called my service manager at mazda he said he doesn't think it would be a problem especcailly if your only spray when it hot

im still confused on what your trying to say but lets just leave it as their spark plugs are miles away from the TMIC. you would be more likely to get them wet with rain from the road then the IC sprayer.

yeah thats what I ment. I didn't think they were right under there topmount like ours. To each his own I guess I figure that top mount get so hot though I dont know how much regular water can help.

that fine mist is really powerful at absorbing heat (evaporative cooling), demi said his boost temps where going to 100degrees with the stock intercooler... for $60!

people spray clean there engines all the time and that valve cover gets reeally hot i don't see there being enough water to bother the plugs I wish Demi would chime in just for conformation..

ive heard of several people who went through a bad rain storm and enough water got through the ducting and went through the IC and actually shorted out 2 coils. just a thought but i also agree that this mod is ok as long as your not over spraying and your only doing it when the water will actually do good on the IC (ie above ~125 degF)

So why'd you argue with me when i said that the water on the plugs would be bad if you heard of it happening to people lol. Just suck it up and get a meth kit man. I'm on stock top mount getting better Iat's then you will on a bigger top mount with a water sprayer.

it still may work i bet those are sealed off pretty good i'm mean what if someonoe sprayed cleaned there engine that would get everything soaked, this is just a fine mist over a schorching hot timc and valve cover.. And hopefully IF Demi shorted out his shit he would have come back and UPDATED THE POST with a warning... as I would.

First off, any water that drips down should be instantly vaporized. You'll only get rust from having something damp for an extended period of time. If you mist it when it's cold then let it sit for a month you may be in trouble but if it's hot it will vaporize instantly.

Another thing, it's not the temp of the water that lowers the boost temp it's the state change of the water going from liquid to gas that pulls out the most energy. I say this so that people don't go to extreme measures to cool the water or ice or something and end up making it too complicated without seeing any results. You could use a chemical mix that requires more energy to turn into gas (higher boiling point) which would remove more heat.

One thing, and I might be wrong on this, but if you use DI water instead of tap you might avoid any rust issues. I think DI water won't cause corrosion because it doesn't have the metal and salt ions present in tap. Idk though, anyone a science major?

Gsr, where did you mount your tank? I've been busy lately and haven't gotten around to it. I want to mount the tank in the trunk to make it easier to get to but haven't had a chance to figure out how to route the coolant line. Is there a grommet that leads from the trunk to under the car? Or will I be forced to route it under the plastic trim? I'd rather not have liquid in that location so if that's the only option I'll be forced to mount it in the engine bay. I thought it might be fun to put it in the glove box but my wife would probably kill me.

just for shits and giggles i ran my car hardlast night and then let it idle in the driveway for like 10 mins. the boost temp went up to like 186DegF. i grabbed a spray bottle with ice cold water and put it on the finest mist setting i could. i sprayed the intercooler and nothing happened. did i do something wrong? i figured i might not be doing it right or there were other variables affecting the equation. do i need to be moving when doing it?

Lol!! You guys know i work crazy hours fixing planes, damn! Anyway for the sprayer to work ideally, you want as much evaporation as possible, so as much water as the intercooler can get rid of and no more. In my second revision it was less of a mist and more of a spray and the intercooler was still able to get rid of all the water before any of it got to the valve cover. Even if some were to get to the valve cover, its hot as balls too and will evaporate the water right off. You would have to be DUMPING water on there to have issues.

My second attempt involved the ground sprayers people use to water specific areas in their yard. Its a little black nozzle that sprays at a 90 degree angle with about a 145 degree spray area. This sent gobs of water over the intercooler as i was running two. One on each side. All the hoses where routed under the intercooler shroud and holes were drilled for the nozzles to stick through. Not a mist but big droplets. I also moved from the wiper sprayer to a 8psi fuel pump. No problems with it getting to the valve cover. The effiency was much less with this method than with the mister system. The next step for me will be find a way to get a 90 degree angle on the mister nozzles so it looks clean and works well, also im going to hook both pumps up to increase pressure on the system to try to get a better mist. I will post pictures of my second attempt soon, we are doing night flying so try to be patient!

Your boost temps wont decrease without spooling up the turbo. I was scratching my head on this one too, but I was running like 110 just cruising with the sprayer on, slammed the pedal and it dropped to 98! The turbo is just sitting there hot without some spool on it.

Great post and dead on. For the most part ice water will not net you more that a few degrees diffrence. It helps but not as much as you might think. Also if not distilled water then i would use filtered tap. These mister systems see alot more pressure running off of a water tap on the back of your house that they do with these little pumps so its easier for them to get clogged with crappy water, where the garden hose will just blow it all out. They are easy to clean but cleaner water = less corrision. Also it should be noted that the ice sold at gas stations and crap are made from really crappy water and will clog your nozzles fast.

Your thinking is sound but it's not right. DI water will still cause rust/oxidation. I would use DI for another reason. Once all the water evaporates, anything else will be left on the IC. So, for example, if you have hard water, you will be leaving calcium deposits on your IC. Thats gonna build up over time and I guarantee it will reduce it's efficiency. Ever seen a shower head clogged up for hard water?

SUCESS!!! yeah there is know way that water would do anything even if if got to the valve cove it would instantly vaporize from the heat, works great I have'nt had a chance to test it thouly but last night im stiing at a light my boost temp are at 150 and i spray for about 5sec then I take off the temps by thrid sre 125! they ussullay cool off on boost but not that quick!! anyway great idea i'll post a vid of my setup shortly..

you have to get on the boost like drive to notice a diff i'm pretty sure

That's what I was thinking about this morning, with DI you don't have to worry about all the mineral deposits.

Also wouldn't DI help prevent electrical shorts since it isn't as conductive as tap? (If you spring a leak some where with the routing of liquid tubing)

as long as the water evoprates immieidatly wouldn't that prevent rust?

I doubt rust will be an issue. Unless your in your driveway with the car shut off and completely cool hitting the mister.

You would only be using this thing when the IC is hot. So everything else should be hot also.

thats what i'm thinking its only going to be sprayed when the engine isn hot, water isn't going to be sitting, coroding etc..
