Default Ebay turbo: Direct bolt on GT28 knock off (not a newb thread)

First, yes I have searched this and other forums to see if there was any information about anyone attempting this use of this (or similar) turbos.

Second, the intent of this thread is to actually collect information. No hearsay or "OH NOOOOS IT IS CHINESE GARBAGE" type crap is desired.

Also, please no discussion about the demise of American manufacturing or fucking the trade balance.

Why? Because several years ago in my turbomustang days a few brave pioneers decided to do builds with some ebay turbos and were pleasantly surprised to find that they worked quite well. This created a lot of shocked disbelief in all the naysayers who had their cousin's uncle's ex-college roommate's buddy's story about a bad experience with crap from SSautochrome. Feel free to search on turbomustang.com for some of their experiences.

So in a nutshell, these turbos exist; however, the real question is "do they work for us".

One of the pictures from an ebay seller gave me enough info to find what I believe is the distributor for these turbos:

E-MOTOR PRODUCTS

I have sent them an inquiry to see if they can provide any spec sheets.

Here are a few links to the turbo that appears to have desirable specs for my application:

GT28 TURBO CHARGER +8PSI INTERNAL WASTEGATE T25 .86 A/R:eBay Motors (item 140336121194 end time Dec-24-09 1454 PST)
(yes, I have already sent them a message asking what turbine actually is on this since their specs and the sale title disagree)

GT28 GT2870 Turbo Charger internal wastegate .86 A/R:eBay Motors (item 150392635422 end time Dec-27-09 08:19:56 PST)

So the key questions from my vantage point are as follows:
1.) Do they bolt up to our stock style manifolds/downpipes. They appear to have the proper T-2 (T-25 style 5-bolt) turbine housing to do so.
2.) What are the water/oil connectors required.

While I have no desire to pay ~$1,800 for an ATP setup, I might be interested enough to be the guinea pig to see if these would work for us with a total price of ~$400-$450 after all the misc connectors required.

Thoughts/comments?

Who says its direct bolt on? we have a mazdaspeed specific turbine housing. Its not a generic 5 bolt t25 housing.

I was under the impression that our turbine housing was of the same dimension as the following:

Garrett GT2871R : atpturbo.com

The first turbine option: the T25 with internal wastegate.

Which should be of the following dimensions:

http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...47_1_3_new.pdf

What I am trying to determine via cross checking is if the cheap turbo is of these dimensions and if that matches our stock setup.

So you are saying that our stock stuff is of a different size? Has anyone documented this in a thread somewhere? Thanks.

Obviously, this thread = fail if we don't have a T-25 style housing to allow direct swapping.

We do not have a T-25 housing. It is Mazda specific.

Actually, yes they will. I emailed them a short while back asking about converting a standard turbine housing GT30, and got this response:

"We could do it, but it's not as simple as a turbine housing because it has to be clocked and the internal gate has to be placed with the matching bracket in the right spot along with the proper fittings for oil and coolant.

You want us to just "convert" it over for you?

It's going to cost about $440."

Not too bad for a turbine housing, actuator, bracket, fittings, etc.

Well this thread went to hell pretty quickly.

I am still wondering if we can find some cheap swap option...humm...

I will try to compare the garrett .pdf dimensions to my stock manifold/DP to see how much different the connections are. It might be possible to do a little grinding to elongate holes to make it work (unlikely, but should be checked).

Just FYI, I wouldn't count on ever getting anything done under warranty. Most of the ebay sellers have lots of weasel words in their warranty section (professional installation, etc). The point is that most of the time they work fine based upon my research.

Just checked the garrett T25 dimensions against our stock DP and mani.

Complete non-starter. Both ends are significantly different.

PITA.

Guess I will have to wait and see how this option turns out:

thats almost no diff then the PTP SST...driveability wise not your best option...

gt3071/76 is the right choice for our cars due to rod fatigue from high boost at mucho low rpms...71/76

Um, actually it couldn't be more different than either the PTP or PG K04 upgrade.

It is basically a custom built GT28 utilizing our stock turbine housing so everything bolts right up (including water/oil lines). Literally everything on the turbo is replaced (new CHRA, new compressor housing, etc) except for the turbine housing, which is machined to accept the larger wheel.

Also important is the shaft has 70% more cross sectional area so we don't have to worry about it snapping.

It isn't dirt cheap like I was initially going for; however, it is much cheaper than other options requiring new EM/DP and the stage 2 is good for 40 lb/m flow (~400 hp).

I personally think the GT30's are overkill for a daily driver MS3. I can always tune to limit torque down low with a quick spooling turbo such as this and hold to redline...I cannot tune away the extra 500-1000 RPMs of lag with a larger turbo.
