| Not Ranked : 0 score Sorry to bump an old thread. But, I was just trying to understand how this change is supposed to work. I understand the valve cover was redesigned to do a better job of keeping blow-by out of the breather line. I get that. What I don't understand is, what value is changing the location of the breather attachment? I suppose it might have slightly different suction characteristics. Maybe more suction, maybe less. What was the goal they were reaching for? Just trying to understand what it did. Thanks.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I just read through most of this thread. Having a similar issue. Car is an '09 MS3 w/ 85k miles (out of warranty) lightly modded (CPE SRI, TIP, cat back and test pipe. I smoke at idle, and also like a mofo between shifts. Consuming a lot of oil as well (prob at least a quart per gas tank). Tried 5w40 Rotella as well as the Bnoon bolt, and absolutely no change. Car has been parked since August and I don't drive it anymore cause the smoke is so bad. Took off the intake to check things out and there were pools of oil in the intake tract. Also tried running the car with just a breather filter on the valve cover and capped off the connection in the SRI, and still having the same issue. The only other thing I can think of is rings, but that still doesn't explain all the oil in my intake (before turbo). Anyone think this TSB would help me out (haven't seen anything about people smoking between shifts) or would I just be wasting my time? Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk

The only thing that confuses me, is I had a small pool of oil in front of the turbo, where the rubber coupler from the TIP clamps to the compressor inlet. | Not Ranked : 0 score sir if i may say^^ I think you are confused, the oil in the intake and pre turbo has nothing at all to do with seals... but exactly the venting this whole thread is about, i believe what you see is the crank case vent line oil that collects in our intakes... if it bothers you too much, get a OCC also another thing to mention since you seem to be confused(i dont blame you) but the compressor side that you took the picture of, isnt what has "seals that leak" on our platform(at least if i understand it all correctly) the seals leak on the exhaust side only, since by building up crank case pressure the oil cant drain out of the turbo, so being stuck inside of it, it has but one plase to go, out the exhaust side seals and into the exhaust, the stuff ur taking pics of, i have had in my intake for the last 80k... no problems... well cept the aweful oily mess, honestly i think its time cars started to be equipped with literal shop vacs to suck that sort of shit in instead of feeding in into the intake... thereby giving your intercooler that special thermal inner coating... lol anyways hope that clears it up also i notice some ppl mentioned that not having a open exhaust can "mask" the problem... thats a bit funny imho cuz i think that the reduction in backpressure caused by an open exhaust actually creates the problem in the first place(granted it appears the issue occurs not in a binary fasion but almost in a sliding scale of severity, i guess its like how do you americans say? everyone is a little gay? jk rofl, sry couldn't resist), since the pressure diff between the oil in the turbo, and the place it wants to leak is even greater when you open up the exhaust(due to lack of pressure of the stock exhausts restriction), so having a free exhaust is like putting someones hand in warm water... they are liable to piss themselves at a greater rate than average, just like the smoking turbos when paired with less backpressure so if your car is parked because it is smoking so much, try putting ur stock exhaust on at least temporarily and see how much oil you still burn, i recon if I am right it should be at the very least less than before... but hey this is all just stuff I dug up from reading on the subject, so some of it might be just other ppls best guesses passed along, but to me it all sounds quite plausible not to mention coincides with my observations on my own car... but you def don't need to worry about the oil in the pictures, if anything, thats a sign that your pcv is working really well in sucking all that blowby out, lol, almost working TOO WELL, based on your concern, but honestly I haven't seen a cleaner turbo outlet on the compressor side anyways also when is the last time you seafoamed?

When the engine is in vacuum, the pressure differential across the turbo oil seals is into the compressor outlet side. Oil can pass from there into the intake and turbo inlet via the bypass hose. There's a reason that a lot of threads suggest that if you see oil in your manifold or in the turbo compressor inlet/outlet that you have failing turbo seals. Seafoam doesn't do a damn thing in the L3-VDT.

| Not Ranked : 0 score ok I see what happened... the huge write up I was referancing in my head I somehow confused compressor housing with exhaust housing, in that analysis Bryan from BNR did of our K04 forever ago... lol I guess no sleep+ long time ago = me being the confused ass bastard.... I blame the colorado weed ... but hey at least I admit it freely, and even preface what I say with the fact that I don't know everything, and that most of my info is second hand, thx for the correction p.s. not that it matters but what had me thinking of all this so backwards was the fact that Bryan mentioned he had a fix for our turbos that would completely seal off the compressor side from the crankcase/oil, i guess with time it turned into me recalling it as a feature of the stock turbo instead of BNRs solution, bleh, i suck

| Not Ranked : 0 score I had a very bad smoking turbo, leaving a smoke cloud that would blot out the sun behind me. Ran the Rotella 5W-40, and it did not do a thing to stop the smoke. Went to mazda after stocking out and had the turbo replacement covered under warranty. They don't look at ECU tune unless there is suspicion to do so. Good Luck to all, its a shame this happens after only 50,000 Miles. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Well seeing as how I spent a good 10 hours reading everything about this problem. I'm not satisfied with the answers.. Or maybe I don't understand. Fix is the vent kit, or big turbo, or higher idle RPM. None of those seem like good fixes I need someone with real insight that can tell me a BETTER solution. If I put a new turbo what is the guarantee that the seals on that turbo won't get messed up? And if that oil is not able to be pushed out all that pressure will blow a seal somewhere else? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Blow-by gets worse with increased miles and/or increased power levels. We can maintain it but it's a never ending battle... I believe there is a threshold at a power level (not sure where exactly) where I would switch from a vacuumed PCV set up (for lower power/lower boost), to a fully vented set up under boost (higher power/higher boost). .....and other factors forgotten lol (ring gaps, CR, bore, ignition timing).
