Smile Finally got my RPMC Turbo Inlet!!!

I so finally got my RPMC Turbo Inlet…and what a nice piece it is!! Thanks Speedy for this product development!!!

So you get a replacement pipe, silicone reducer, 2 t-bolts, and a small hose.

Uninstalling the stock piece was very easy.
-Remove battery
-Disconnect ECU harness and surrounding wiring attached to battery box
-Remove battery box and ECU
-I disconnected the EGR and some other connector for better access
-Loosen all stock turbo inlet clamps, attachment bolt, and small hose clamps

Man, that stock piece is HORRIBLE!!! It has so many sharp edges and bends!!! Uh, I’m glad this thing is out!!!

There is plenty of room to work in; definitely an easy mod if you have an hour’s time to spare. I took a little extra time for the installation since I am anal and like everything to be torque and placed properly.

Never seen the front of my turbo before...damn, this thing is tiny!!! And crammed in there!!!

There is a heat hose that comes in slight contact with the inlet tube. It looks worst when you are installing the silicone reducer on the turbo, but when you install the inlet pipe, it pretty much clears the hose slightly. I see no issue with this. The heater hose also have a protective rubber sleeve.

I put everything back together and everything fit perfectly.

It comes pretty close to the ECU housing…a little too close for comfort, but again, I don’t see any issues with this. It probably has 1/8th of clearance. And if you are that paranoid, you could always wrap the ECU box with heat reflective tape…which actually sounds like a great idea!!! Though I noticed the inlet does not get very hot...unlike the intake pipes...would that be due to the powder coating?

Once everything is put back together...you can't even tell you've upgraded the inlet...

My initial driving impressions…? Well, it totally changed the way my HKS SSQV sounds!!! I don’t know if I’m happy about this or not yet. Basically it changed it from a hitch pitched sound to a low pitched sound. It actually makes it quieter… I haven’t felt any improvement in performance…but that maybe because the ECU is trying to re-learn everything again since I had to disconnect the battery. I’ll give it a few more days and report back. But overall, I am a happy camper!!!!

I noticed a slight change in the sound of my forge. Only when I'm in very low boost at part throttle.

This piece works VERY nicely with the reworked turbo. Because of the clip on the exhaust turbine, I was seeing less boost and slower spool times. With the inlet, the spool times at least feel like they are back to stock. Before if I was cruising in sixth gear I would have to push the pedal past half way in order to get out of vacuum, but now just a little tappy-tap is all it needs.

I also noticed I am running a bit leaner under "soft" driving conditions. WOT I am still in the 10-11 range past 4k. So everything seems to be working right.

Anything that flows better is gonna be helpful... the next step is to get the intake mani ported, or find someone to make us a new one

I think I have noticed reduced lowend torque with the inlet in place...
I can't seem to spin 2nd gear as willingly as I used to...which is a good thing for my type of racing. The car overall pulls harder in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. But 2nd seemed to take a hit...

Has anyone else felt this? (huh)

I made my own 3" and I sort of feel the same way - like it's a little more laggy if that makes any sense. My BOV sound definitely changed but it's a custom job so there could be any number of reasons why.

I know power isn't a big factor, but any difference in your times in autocross?

wow that stock piece is crap. Almost anything is gonna flow better than that. Looks like you didn't have to move/modify the battery box right?

anyone got a dyno of this thing?

There's one somewhere on mazda3forums... just search for RPMC Dyno.

I think on the stock turbo at stock boost levels its only middlin' gains. On a bigger or upgraded turbo is where you'll see the major benefits.

For me, I don't want to go back to that crappy stock piece. I know my car feels stronger and i know that I now can hear my turbo spooling which can only mean airflow is cleaner and the pipe is now flowing air more cleanly and efficiently. It's a very good replacement for the stock piece, plus no cels or problems!

If you are worried about warranty work, the techs probably won't be able to tell that it isn't the factory piece. + for performance and + for stealth

Custom Turbo Inlet-Fits Like Stock!

I do plan on eventually doing the EGR delete along with getting the intake mani ported. That'll happen once I clean up the rest of the restrictions.

I think this is a worthwhile mod... its very affordable and easy to install. IMHO the aftermarket intakes should have replaced this piece.

Seems like the car is getting strong...must have been bad fuel; last week or so, I was buying fuel from another station and fuel brand that I usually don't buy.

2nd gear wheel spin is coming back!!!! Along with 3rd gear TC intervention...I now have to turn that crap off...

Matt at RPMC told me someone bought a ceramic coated one today to put on a Speed6. He already re-located his battery, but is going to test fit it with the stock battery box and hold-down screw (the one in the center of the pic) re-installed. He is going to send install pictures to RPMC too.

Sorry AutoX-got off topic

Thanks Speedy!! I'll keep an eye out for his response. My battery will be moved for the inlet pipe replacement. Already got the kit. With a 60/40 or so wt distribution hell I'd put my pocket change back in the trunk to try to balance the thing out!!
