Default FMIC: Cobb vs TR8L

So, decided to go BT but can't decide if I will be happy with GTX3071R power plus headaches or a Beaner, so instead I'm getting support mods until I make up my mind. Either way, I want a FMIC. Also, a little rushed because I trying to buy before Edge's Cyber Monday sale ends. Been reading a ton the last 2 days and my head is kinda mushy now.

Anyway, was about to pull the trigger on a Cobb FMIC when I decided to look into the TR8/L just for good measure. From the limited info on both sites they seam to be built the same. I would say, based on the dimensions, that the Cobb is more like the TR8L with the 2 extra inches and a hair taller. I also see that the Cobb has less pressure drop then either TR8 or L. Based on the discussion on the TR8 vs TR8L, it leads me to believe that the Cobb will flow better but not cool as well as either. Am I right or way off?

Also, for those who care, I do have a DP, AP, and internals.

The Cobb core is similar in size to the tr8l, I run it on my car and it performs very well.

I run the tr8l core with cobb piping. You'll be fine with either core. Both are plenty capable enough of supporting the bnr or 3071

Ah, just the man I was looking for(haha), so you are happy with a 2867 and big core. Good to hear. The Cobb looks really good during this sale.

Other side questions; Am I correct that the only way to get 400whp on the S3 is with e85 and or Meth? While a 3071, with the right parts/tune can do 400 on 93?

In very cold weather with a lot of flow parts you may get close to 400 on 93 but otherwise in most cases and on most dynos it won't get there without higher octane. Also not all 93 across the country is the same.

Running tr8 with pg piping on 3071r .
Tr8 fits good but I think the most important part of any BT upgrade on our cars is getting a proper tune.

I would go with the standard TR8 for anything under a 35r.

The tr8 has a higher pressure drop than the L and the COBB due to fin design. The staggered fins mean a higher surface area to cool the BATs, but this results in a higher pressure drop as well. Given what a 3071 is capable of pressure wise, you shouldn't find this to be an issue for the turbo and the cooling capabilities are worth the small pressure drop penalty.

As far as pressure drop goes anyway I don't trust the published numbers because they never specify test pressure or flow rates, both of which will impact the result. I can get you a core with 0 pressure drop if I do my numbers right. Just sayin'

Price wise there is no comparison. I have the TR8L and spent well under 500 for the core, piping, silicone, clamps etc. I wish I had gone with the regular TR8 but for the most part the difference is minimal for my application and I'm happy with my core. I see temps ~8* above intake temps at WOT in the summer. Not bad IMO.

The choice is yours. I'm always on a budget and always shopping for the best deal, which in the case of an fmic for this car is the TR8.

I run the tr8l with the cobb v2 piping. Super easy install and its a few hundred less that way versus going with the full cobb kit.

Both the BNR and 3071 won't likely get you to 400 on 93. The 3071 with good flowing bolt ons and catless setup will get you about 360 on a dynojet with 93 octane.

Didn't you get 350 on the BNR on 93 when you did the comparison with the 3071? Seems like for the price then you almost have to get the S3.

I have gotten 350 out of a couple BNR setups on 93, but the norm is 330ish. Good flowing parts go a long way. Meaning 3" or bigger intake, good flowing core, catless DP, full 3" exhaust etc.

The 3071 will be capable of more and not need to be pushed as hard to get the numbers. I will say though, if you get a 3071, go with EWG from the get go. Those turbos are very hit or miss on what they will be like out of the box and IWG

All good ideas, thank you. I still have to decide but am fine waiting for now. Think I might get the TR8 and COBB fittings. Will I have to convert my MSCAI to a short ram? Now trying to pick a BPV and OCC as well as a boost controller. Thinking about the JBR V2 occ, don't know about the BPV, and am looking at MBC based on Lex's recommendation over EBS.

You have to take my numbers with a grain of salt because I have a lot more than just bolt ons going on. lol. But I was seeing 360 and still could have gone further. But I run meth, so I didn't try pushing any further on 93 because I really never plan on running the car on just 93, unless I'm out of meth.

LOL yea, I just got the simple bolt ons going and on stock block and a tune from u on 93 and a 3 gal of E85. Just curious what i'd be looking at with the 2867. Also may sway the OP to look into this option as well since I too run a TR8 fmic with CXRacing piping

So no thoughts on the JBR OCC? MD a "better" option? Back to searching...

Keep in mind the tr8 is a couple inches narrower than the tr8l. The tr8 won't be able to use the cobb core mounting brackets, you'll have to strap it to the crash bar or something similar. This is gen 1 at least, not sure on the pu.

The BNR, GT2871, GTX2867, will all get you damn close to the same power. The 3071 a shade more than those other 3.

I'm using the Cobb brackets on the TR8. Just had to use a really long bolt to make it work. the TR8L would probably be easier as far as fitment for the bracket goes but it's doable on the TR8

The tr8l is the correct length, but only uses one bolt to attach it.

You mean the length is off, 22 vs 24, not how narrow, 3.5 for both, right?

Sorry, I wasn't questioning Matt or his product. It was the fact someone responded in a helpful manner instead of flaming and telling me to search.

Second the MD OCC. I love JBR, but I really like Matt's setups. I've been running mine for a bit over 60k. As long as the stock BPV isn't leaking, stick with that. If you must have an aftermarket one, the Corksport looks good.

Sometimes searching doesn't always do justice. I just vouch for the product that I'm running cuz it sounds like the route you wanna go isn't too far from where i'm going as well. Plus I gave the benefit of the doubt u at least did some sort of searching lol

I think I agree with you on the BPV. I was just getting it now for use later with higher boost but now don't think the prices are so good that I have to get it now.

Thanks. Got a question, I have a MSCAI and am getting that FMIC. Will the COBB pipping lply nice with it or will they try and occupy the same space? This will help me determine what version of MD's occ to get.

I'll throw a vote for the JBR OCC. I have nothing against the MD setup, both use high quality cans (MD uses a saikou michi, JBR uses a 42 draft designs) and components I just happened to get a JBR since none of his products have let me down (and I have a lot of them). Every time I drain the oil I get plenty of crap from the can and would absolutely buy it again. Pick one and buy it, you won't do better than these 2.

No worries, thanks. Trying to search. Version 2 will work with the FMIC and CAI but if those two don't play well then I will have to witch to a SRI which will allow me to get a occ that doesn't need the under tray to be removed to drain.

Anybody got an answer to why I need longer bolts to use the COBB brackets with the TR8 since they are both listed as being 3.5" deep?

Yes because the width is 2" shorter so the mounting points on the core wont reach where the bracket bolts up to

The 3.5" is the depth of the core (front to back) which isn't the problem. The problem comes in the width (left to right) reaching the bracket. Hopefully that helps

Ah, so when everybody is using the both terms , width and length, what they are talking about is the length from both ends. Since this is where the 2 differ. Does this mean that with the TR8, the bolts won't line up flush and will have to be longer and crooked to reach?

Longer yes, crooked no. If u want the bolts to be flush, go TR8L. I didn't know until I already got everything and found out during the install LOL. But I get no movement from my core and u cant see the long bolt when looking at my fmic so it's secure.

Ah shit. I just reread your earlier posts and now I get it. Couldn't see the forest for the trees. Thanks for holding my hand with that.

Well, with shipping, the price difference between the TR8 with COBB pipes and the COBB FMIC kit is $110 and, because I'm crazy, I'm hunting for some/any info on the Forge kit which cost $236 more then the TR8. Guess I'll have to decide if the bigger core and COBB design is worth it or not.

cutting your own piping is easy. If you are getting a new bpv anyway, get an HKS and pick up an intercooler pipe with an HKS flange already welded in. Saves the hassle.
