Default Grimmspeed 3 port mode - tap hot IC tube for boost source?

Hey all,

Probably a dumb question but I'd rather ask a dumb question than do something dumb.

I'm hopefully going to be hooking up the Grimmspeed EBCS in 3 port interrupt mode today and searching only showed people drilling out restrictor pill in housing, ignoring it and just using that source, or tee'ing off the BOV vac line. I'd rather avoid drilling the pill, and since the HKS SSQV is a pull type valve and the recommendation is to use an uninterrupted boost source for the Grimmspeed, seems I might be compromising the performance of both parts tee'ing off the BOV/BPV vac line.

My understanding is doing the ATP silicone boost tap on the silicone boost tube connecting the compressor to my stock TMIC in back of engine bay is a valid approach. Am I correct in this? I've already replaced the stock rubber tubes with the reinforced JBR boost tubes.

I've seen contradicting info on drilling or not drilling the pill on stock k04 for 3 port mode but I'd rather set it up optimally because I'm just starting my retune (Justin @ Freektune). I've found posts saying to drill it, and I've seen posts saying ignore it.

Thanks for the help.

You need to think about fluid and pressure reaction to figure out the possibles options.

Personally, drilling a silicone tube is just adding one more source of possible leak...I don't like that.

A T on the Bov vac line work pretty well, it is how mine is piped now (My k04 pill is curiously plugged and it was a quick fix until i upgrade that shit)
Since bov works when, wg don't, and reverse, one should not affect the other.
The only concern is that you take boost level in the IM instead of the turbo discharge. At IC discharge, pressure drop a bit so you may need to lower the WG duty a tiny bit to achieve the same exact IM pressure because your boost source come with less PSI to push against the actuator spring....
If you have an egr delete kit, you may modify the IM blocking plug as a boost source for your EBC too... (I did that on my old engine for the bov)

I would use the shortest piping route as possible because the time it takes to fill the vaccum line may create a little spike but it remain marginal with a k04...
Someone that would keep the pill with a 3way will generate an even worst lag into the wastegate response because the restricted airflow will take a lot more time to fill the pipe and push against the WG spring....
We go 3 way interrupt for a faster response time and to avoid playing with pill size. Keeping it, is just stupid unless you pipe the valve like the oem setup to keep the same WG duty mapping....

If you check for leaks and you didn't made a test under compressor pressure, you aren't done checking for leaks....

Your plan is fine, you just want a solid uninterrupted source. Justin will be able to adjust the wgdc accordingly for whatever source area you end up at. My only advice would be keep the hose routing as short as possible to prevent lag in true psi.

That being said drilling the restritor is really easy. I drilled mine for my grimspeed setup. I def would not use it restricted as I feel the reduced volume wouldn't be sufficient for accurate control. Its fine for a bleed setup where a constant pressure/volume draw is used, but in an interrupt where its a volume dump I want that chamber/actuator filled as quickly as possible.

Awesome! Thank you both for the good info. Just want to dot by i's and cross my t's ahead of install time.

Definitely didn't understand why people were tapping the BPV vac line if it says to have your boost source as close to compressor as possible, but if its just a matter of adjusting WG duty cycle to dial it in for your source, makes perfect sense to me. I think I'll go with this approach of tee'ing the BPV vac line, easiest to fix if there's a leak too.

Thanks again guys.

Yes you need it as short as possible and the best of the best place is on the turbo hosing but it is a lot easier and not that bad for a non creeping turbo to T the bov port....

It is more important to reduce piping lenght between EBC and WG and back into TIH. So installing the EBC around where the oem is would be best.

Dont forget to plug the other side of the Wg

Got the install done today, tee'd off from the BPV line and all working as expected. I was off to a bad start as I got pulled over doing 40 in a 25 on way to parents' house to work on car, no ticket though. Longest part of install was getting the 6mm hose off bottom of wastegate and turbo to cap both ends off, I was being stubborn and left TIP and Intercooler on so not much room to work. Thanks again for the help!
