Its the same unit we are using for the SRT4 but we are using slip lock fittings to go to the hard plastic line on both sides. I will get some pictures up of the installed unit this weekend. I might start to offer these if its working to keep the oil out of the intake.

Sounds like a truly essential mod. Blueish smoke, bad turbo/turbo seal(s), white smoke most likely condesnation build up if you have no cats or a high flow cat. I have the CPE turboback and I get a smell of burnt FUEL, not oil since it's a true high flow cat. Doesn't burn everything, but just enough to get you through smog testing.

I will start the ordering process then. Check valves will be on the site here very soon.

Is there any point in returning the vented gases to the intake (other than emissions) Why not just plug the intake hole and vent the can to atmosphere?

I definitely need the catch can/ check valve set up. This will help with my blow by, but doubt it's gonna do much for my bad turbo seals I need the big wheel and new seals.

We should be able to do that cheap. Let me talk with my turbo rebuilder and we can come up with something that has a clip on the exhaust wheel.

No, your car is in need of a check valve. I really have to get these done for the car.

i think you are picturing the can on the wrong end of the PCV system. it should be placed between the PCV valv (under the intake manifold) and the manifold vacuum source. it does nnot go up on the top in-line with the cai tube...that is where the fresh air is drawn in from, it isnt supposed to vent anything out, but it will with a crappy PCV valve while under boost. thats why the check valve is needed between the catch can and intake manifold.... it wont get past that and a pcv valve !

I know how the pcv is plumbed. Flow of vapors is from the crankcase through the pcv valve to the intake manifold as a controlled vacuum leak. Crankcase vapors consist of blow by, oil mist and fresh air drawn in through the tube that runs from just behind the MAF to the right rear corner of the valve cover. To answer my own question (now that I have thought about it), if the pcv valve was vented to atmosphere through a catch can, you would never see vacuum on the outlet of the pcv valve and therefore never have any flow. Bad things would build up in the crankcase causing sludge and degraded lubricant.

As it is, the only time you have any flow through the pcv valve is when the pressure in the intake manifold is lower than the pressure in the crankcase. Since the crankcase is ported to the atmosphere through the valve cover tube, you only have flow through the pcv valve during periods of vacuum in the intake. During periods of boost, the pcv valve is closed and any blow by is vented to the fresh air tube behind the MAF.

I do not understand how a different/additional check valve will change anything. To my knowledge we do not have a problem with reverse flow in the pcv valve system. some pneumatic check valves require 5 psi just to start opening. This would radically decrease the function of the pcv system. Is this the desired modification to the system?

When I install my catch can, I will definitely keep the line to the intake manifold. I am going to use a coalescing filter as the reservoir.

the check valve stops the boost from leaking past the shitty stock pcv valve.

So you mean losing boost from the intake backwards through the PCV valve into the crankcase? Is there any proof of this?

yep. under boost the pcv is supposed to seal off and hold the boost back. it is very common however that it doesnt quite work that way. i have pressure tested my car for leaks, and yes my pcv does have a very slight leak. the chack valve along with the pcv will stop that.

I am seriously pissed that such a simple part that on so many other cars is fine, isnt on the MS3. WTF is up with these seals. I knew going into it that there might be some smoke but I never expected there to be this much.

What do you guys think I should do? Go to the dealer as it is and hope for the best or put it back to stock(bboooooo) and mask the problem? I vote for just taking it in as it is and rolling the dice.
After having the CPE Turbo back on the car for a solid 9 months, I'm unfortunate to say my rear turbo seal went out yesterday. White smoke, blue on WOT. Drove the car for a strong 20 minutes, came to a stop and I could smell the odor of burning oil through the exhaust. Called Mazda, they said they voided my warranty due to having a turbo back. I'm going to talk to the service manager tomorrow since he warrantied someone else with CATLESS turbo back 2 weeks ago for the same damn ISSUE, bad turbo seal.

... I feel your pain.

Take care of it now. I'm in the situation of letting it go too far and I have to get a new motor. Hopefully everything will be ok we'll see after this week but back to the point. TAKE IT IN!!!

The notorious "smoking turbo" blew your motor? Too much oil loss? Details please! I've been on the smoking turbo now for about 1500 miles or so. It will be another 1500 before I can get the problem taken care of. Possibly less, depending how fast PTP get's the "big wheel" in stock . New seals please!

[QUOTE=whoosh;7023]guys
TRU-BOOST is right on the money

just like many other mods, this may or may not cure some smoking but I can assure you 100%, that installing a catch can between the actual PCV and intake mani will cure oil in your intake tract and contamination / build up on your valves

there is another problem that has surfaced that TRU-BOOST mentioned: the fact that a check valve is needed in addtion to the baffled catch can.
Our OEM PCV valve leaks and causes excessive crank case pressure. I can't say what adverse affect that has on the MZR at this point in time but logically, it's not something you want.

The ideal set up (my set up)
is using a 90 degree fitting where the PCV valve currently resides
run your hose to the "INLET" side of the catch can.
Then install a heavy duty oneway or check valve on the "OUTLET" side of the catch can.
Then obviously run that hose back to the rear vacuum port of the intake manifold.

I'll post my test results in vid form of the leaky brand new PCV valve - it's bad, really bad

here are a few pics for those that haven't seen them.
I empty my catch can every weekend and get the same amount of fuelishoilywhitebrownstuff every time

dude thats kinda gross. it looks like your car is vomiting into that catch can.

BTW i know there was a thread on 247 about what build dates had the smoking turbos and i believe it said that only the 07s had the problem but is anyone with a modded 08 having the same problem? and if not would there really be any reason for me to put in the catch can and check valve on my 08?

even if your car doesnt smoke a CC is a good idea. you still have oil getting drawn into your intake manifold. and the check valve will prevent that boost leak from your PCV valve..... yes its there !

Bump

And yes, quite a few 08s have the problem.....including mine. There are several 08s on the other forums that were having the problems before I stopped hanging around them (the forums...). This is now my permanent home

Lot of great info here guys, but not too many photos other then woosh's initial ones! Ptp, are you working on an inclusive kit to sell? (with check valve, baffle can, and hoses?). Or are you just going to offer some heavy duty valves?
