Default Home Fabricated Short Ram

A while ago I found a place that has 2.62 ID 3" OD aluminum piping, as well as other sizes. I ended up making some press fit 4" down to the 3" size, so that I could machine a bell mouth design (that I posted several months ago initially). Here's the finished product. Install will be tomorrow. Here's the links to the big pics.

Here's a smaller pic of the finished product if you don't want to wait for the larger pics to load above. Painted with flat black texture paint...

Don't need them with a bellmouth design. The bellmouth itself straightens the air as it enters. I'll log fuel trims over the next couple of weeks.

I spent enough in materials to build 10 more like this one. I couldn't find any place that would sell me small enough quantities, or at least small enough to justify the cost... so I ordered enough for 10. If you want a materials list, I'm not willing to give that up because it's pretty much already out there with these pics along with the ones I posted a few months back when this first started (in the air/water intercooler thread). If you want to help me out and buy some of my remaining materials, or in any stage of completion, then we can work something out.

I assume people will be waiting for fuel trim logs, just as I would be though. No problem there, I've been waiting this long, I can wait a little while longer to get my materials cost back.

Also, just a note, the production one will look a bit cleaner than the one in the pics, and can be left bare aluminum as well as painted or powder coated any color prior to assembly. This one just got beat up sitting around the shop for so long. It actually fell off of a shelf, hit the grinder as it was spinning, and got shot across the room... durability test: CHECK!!!

Those are rivets to ensure the epoxy doesn't let go of the plastic/aluminum. I've never had it fail, but they are cheap insurance. I did have to drill holes for the screws, just not shown since I didn't disassemble the MAF until this morning to get the pattern for drilling them.

INSTALED PICS ADDED:

EDIT: Daaaaaaayum I need to wash that engine bay. Emmmmmmmbarrasssssssing!

I had to grind down the sensor mounting pad in order to get the electrical connector onto it, so minor change in the next one built. I'll have to touch up the paint some other time as I need logs on this thing to know whether it works or not. Stay tuned!

Peep this pic http://www.bnmotorsports.com/100_0282.JPG under the pop rivet gun. 90 degree with a 1" nipple. It's been in once as a mock up, but not going in until I get the powder coated speedie6 inlet back in there though.

I started making a production short ram this morning to make sure I can reproduce it again and again, then I will concentrate on the inlet.

Not really. I have my other pieces that I've powder coated that never got put back in. The pieces in there now are extras I bought to sell, but interest was lower than I wanted, so it's just been kinda sitting around all winter. Once things warm up, I'll put my powder coated pieces back in and sell the others off to help pay for some new tires and maaaaaaybe rims if I find some I like.

How does it fit with the 90 degree bend? Compared to the 45 degree bend that is.

I don't know Hector, I've never had a 45 degree one to compare it to. Since I needed a 90 to clear my air/water cooler, that's all I've had besides the stock acordian tube. EDIT: Now that I think about it, I did have a Cobb from a friend locally (he has a Speed 6, not on the boards). Their 45 moves the nipple towards the front of the car more, that's about the only real change from memory.

In mock up, the PCV line will need to be replaced because of the location of the 1" nipple on the new hose. Since I was going to do a catch can anyway, this is a non issue for me.

Damn. I was thinking about getting that hose to replace the breather filter setup on my car now (no nipple on my intake). I have no plans as of now to install a catch can...I guess I have to spend the $80 on the Street Unit piece.

Bend over, I'll show you. LOL!

Gloves to keep the grease off and give me better grip on tools. Cheaper than replacing so many sets of my Mechanix gloves if I don't need the added protection from impacts.

Just a FYI,
If for any reason you ever had an air straightener issue (that for some reason the bell mouth design wasn't fully addressing for one reason or another), I think AEM now sells just the air straighter by itself for something like 15 bucks. Just a FYI, I don't think you'll have any issues though.

STFT are at or VERY near 0 with the occasional flicker to +/- 2-3 on throttle transitions, which is right where it should be. LTFT's are still settingling out because they were so far out of spec with the 3" Spectre MAF in there, but from 11 with the Spectre down to 4 or 5 now is a great improvement. I need to just reset the ECU and let it learn from scratch to see if it settles any more, but I just haven't had the time.

The throttle response is for sure better with the velocity stack in there as I did take the time to run another one without the velocity stack and there was for sure an improvement. I think I will make it an option for someone though if they get a different velocity stack, or just want the cheapest alternative out there without the velocity stack...

Geez, how much does that thing weigh? The pipe looks a bit thick. I know it's aluminum and all but damn. haha. I imagine 2.62" ID is a bit hard to find though.

Doesn't weight much at all. Just a little bit thicker than 1/4 inch... I'll put it on a scale and find out. I'm going to start making more tonight in the garage.

Budget Ram/no filter will be about 60 bux - fits into the stock accordian tube, no noticeable gain with the aftermarket silicone tube from my testing. Does NOT have the bellmouth on it, 3" inlet, 2.62 ID pipe.

85 bux for the bellmouth inlet version/no filter - again, fits into the stock accordian tube. 4" bellmouth inlet to 2.62" ID pipe.

Add 20 bux for filter for either one.

If you really want the silicone inlet part, SU sells them for 80 bux.

10 bux from EACH INLET SOLD will be donated to this site!!!

More pics to come. I'll be getting everything ready to post on Thursday night after work.
