Default How much is really safe...

okay, my car is almost completely stock. Only mods are an MS CAI with airflow straightener, and an Accessport. I've tried many different maps, beta's and official release, and most of them have either dissappointed with poor performance, or felt quick but had other issues like causing knock.

I found one map that I really like, KR is non existent, car runs very strong, overall the best map I've tried out of probably a dozen. My only concern is that this map tends to hold the boost kind of high in the upper RPM. Down low it seems fine, I spike 19-20 psi, quickly settle to high 17's, and then the boost holds very steady, from 16.5 to 17.5 psi depending on the weather and what gear I'm in. So it's not too high for the most part. It's right where I want it.

The problem is it just keeps holding it, all the way to redline, it is still around 17 psi. Now, I don't WANT to push as hard as I can, I don't want to be on the ragged edge, please don't misunderstand... this is just the way the map does it, but it just so happens to do everything else much better than other maps I've tried. If I could custom tune, I would run this exact map but drop boost to like 16 psi by redline. Normally, I shift at 6100 rpm anyways, but every so often I'm not paying attention and will run to the rev limiter, and it's times like that that I'm worried about.

I am worried that for a mostly stock car, 17.5 psi above 6000 rpm is going to have EGT's too high or is going to stress the turbo, but I dont' know this for sure, so I hope someone here can give me a better idea if this is risky or not. If I have to choose between an awesome running car with a greatly shortened life span on the engine or turbo, or a not-so-awesome running car that is more reliable in the long haul... well I guess I will have to go back to another map.

Additional info: air/fuel ratio is steady at ~11.5:1, timing advance at 6500 rpm is 13 degrees, and KR for the whole run is 0. Do you guys think this is safe with boost at 17.5 psi at high rpm? Can I keep running this map safely?

you should be safe, if you were spiking well above 20 then you should start worrying, most people spike about 18-19 (with out any mods) and settle in around 15ish, you're not really pushing much more boost than that. I think I saw some where else someone with similar mods settle in around 12, but of course they weren't to happy about it!

Like truboost said you got something solid going for you don't F it up! lol

yeah the spike I'm not worried about at all, it's the boost at high rpm, 5500+ that I'm worried about. Some little voice inside me telling me that 17.5 psi at that high rpm is just too much.

The key is no knock ... if the egt's go too high the knock will set in. As long as you've got a warning on the kr you should be good.

You are fine, 17.5psi with a cai as your only mod is no problem. If you had a turbo back exhaust, full intake, manifold, and ported heads and your stock turbo was holding 17.5psi I would not only throw the bs flag and would tell you to turn it down. As you are is fine though.
