I will try a 900rpm idle map and hunt down some 5w40.

The only mods i have are hacked air box with kn filter, forge, and test pipel
I first noticed smoke at the autox at extended idle. Changed to rotellat 5w40 and stoped for a few months, Then the race pipe was installed and smoke city. THe next day i checked the oil level, a little over the full line when hot, drained some oil and after a week the smoke hasnt returned< i also removed a shim from the forge to compensate for the extra breathing and all is good so far.
Oil level is critical in these cars being that the pcv box is so close to the oil level.

Just an FYI for you guys, I've done a 900 RPM idle and run 0W-40 Royal Purple and I still smoke. Not as bad as the lower idle, but still there enough to make a cloud.

so I've tried the 1.03L beta map tonight, with upped idle to 900 and it's good! 10 minute idle, no smoke...mind you, there could still be some, but I couldn't see any smoke...good enough to not draw attention during the commute...plus, with the upped idle, the car PURRS...win-win!

on another note, I've sourced some Euro 5-40 synth...will report with more details when I get it in the car.

yes as tiz said oil level is critical as i proved this once even with 5w40. i had put 5.5qts of 5w40 in and drove around for a month with no smoke, i then added about .3qts and just like that i had minor smoking.

I have no clue what oil was used, but I just noticed white smoke at idle. Barely noticable but it was there. Dammit. I've had this car for less than a week...lol

It sucks dont it..Is it a catless DP?If so have a high flow cat welded into your racepipe to try and stop the smoking,or hide it.

The spin-on kit will not make a diffrence in smoking or not.Just try the 5W40 oil and add a oil CC and see if it stops,If not try putting in a high flow cat.

If you have the ATR you may want to up the idle speed to 900 rpms, it has worked for me on clearing up the smoking and i believe it worked for another member too.

man, i just quit smoking cigarettes, and now my car just started smoking! I put on a magnaflow cbe yesterday, and got big time blue smoke just today. i have had a test pipe on for months with no smoking. not sure why it would smoke, its not much of a diameter increase in the exhaust. it seems to be coming out of the left muffler primarily. mainly at idle, and after its been sitting for about 3 minutes. almost sounded like it started smoking when the fan came on? im hoping its just new parts and to give a few days. i checked it again later and the smoke seemed white?? weiird. otherwise i'll try the oil 5w40 a try if it dosent go away.

i also have a forge bpv (blue with 1 shim). did you notice improvements with no shims? or how many shims/color ring?

Sorry if anyone hit on this already, but could the smoking simply be overfilled oiled? Turbo cars have a good bit of extra shit for oil to drain from, not to mention if some of the places aren't at a point which allows a good gravity drain. Also Dipsticks aren't exactly scientific measurement tools.

To stop my smoking I went from 5w-30 to 10w-30 but some have done 5w-40. I also have an Access Port and used the ATR tuning software to up my idle to 900. I have a turbo back exhaust and all is good!

ok, so i've done alot of reading since i started smoking. i have a couple of Q's.

1. if you are smoking, and the problem quite possibly being the turbo seals, and you use a thicker oil and CC and that stops it from smoking, is that kind just putting a band aid on the real problem? i mean, its quite possible it could be stopped, but if it is the turbo seals and its under warranty, then wouldnt it be best to get it replaced? or does the cc and oil mend it before it hits the seals?

would i be losing any power by keeping the same turbo with cc/oil to stop the smoking vs. a new turbo?

2. if i decide to take my car into mazda to get the smoking checked out, do you think my catback w/ test pipe and CAI (i can put my oem bpv back on) left on will be ok in terms of not voiding warranty?

Default heading to dealership friday

well, my car started smoking immediately after putting on my magnaflow cbe. i had a race pipe previously with no problems. tried running 5w-40 with no luck. still smoking.

im going to put my bpv back to stock, and put my cat back in place of the race pipe before i take it in on friday morning. only mods i'll have is AEM intake and cbe (thats engine related). hoping that wont be an issue considering mazda sells similar parts. a pipe is a pipe.

car is still under warranty. 22k miles. i found MTOL 5505 referenced here: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showt...hp?t=123748050
hoping by passing that on to the dealer will help.

i've got all my oil change records as well. any other info i can arm myself with that before i go in?

thanks,

They may give you shit about your cbe but that depends on your dealer. With all the smoking problems they may just replace it with no guestions asked. It all boils down to how your dealer is with mods.

well fellas, took it in and good news.

they were able to replicate the smoking issue.
they changed my oil to a heavier oil (which i already had).
the called mazdausa and they said i will be getting the new pcv valve system when it comes out. not sure on when that will be.
if i still smoke after that, then will be a turbo replacement.
that was the official reply from mazda.

initially on the phone the guy said the cbe would void my warranty, but they didnt say a word about my mods. roger beasley mazda austin dealership is mod friendly.

i'm going to check back with them next week and see where they are with the pcv system

I have a cobb dp and a cpe exhaust.. after i installed the dp there wasnt any smoke.. the white smoke only appeared after about 2 min of running the engine at idle directly after i put the new exhaust on.. and it was a lot of smoke.. smelt like burnt fire works.. and i waited a week or so to see if maybe the exhaust was burning some corrosion preventative inside the exhaust.. still major smoking when sitting at stop lights.. its embarrassing.. I talked to street unit and they said the reason why i couldnt see the smoke before the new exhaust was cause the old exhaust has lots of restrictions on it and absorbed most of it.. with the new exhaust it has a free flow right out..

I guess my question is.. Is this the bad seal in the turbo? And would just totally replacing the turbo with an upgraded one solve the problem?

thanks for any input

did you post this in the wrong thread? the post before yours is 3 years old...

apropos your comment: if you don't have receipts, you can have them take off the valve cover and inspect the cams and such. if the car has been taken care of, it will be clean and shiny in there. if not, it'll have sludge and caked on crap.

also, i posted on your thread about this, the smoking turbo warranty was extended to 70k miles, no time limit.

edit: yes time limit. the warranty was extended to 7years/70k miles.

My tapatalk does this all the time. That was supposed to posted on an entirely different website. But thanks for the advice.

Thought it was 7 years 70k miles? Or is that the VVT?
