Default k16 compressor wheels into k04s

So I met this random dude with a crazy built 2001 s4 putting down 400 awhp *mustang dyno 400awhp*. He mentioned something to me that just blew my mind.

Putting a k16 turbo compressor wheel (I believe porsche uses k16 turbos for the 911 or some shit) into the stock k04s. I know there is some porting involved, but is this possible for us mazdaspeed folk?

400awhp S4 doesnt need to be "crazy built" just needs a pair of k04s and some supporting mods.

Subbed for some k16 info.

Looked at it a bit myself. All of the Audi guys who are doing it are having the compressor wheel swap done by a turbo shop. So basically the cost of reworking a K04, and then the cost of the wheel and anything else that needs to be swapped out or machined/modified. Maybe even a new K16 cold side housing?

From this site:
Compressor Wheels - 3K Racing Applications - TurboMaster

K04 Wheel diameter: 51mm
K16 Wheel diameter: 55mm

The S4's are claiming 20-30 whp for swapping to a PAIR of hybrids.

My advice to you is just to go BNR turbo. I have a Stg3 and it pulls hard up to 7200rpm. With extremely conservative tune at 15.5psi it goes fast and is veeeeery smooth. Going to tune for 18ish psi soon. Without meth and with local pos gas..

Agreed. You could push that BNR much harder/more safely than the stock K04 and make one hell of a snappy DD as long as you drive and tune the car properly.

I remember Bryan talking about 25psi and me saying "No way..." but he was very calm and cool about doing so with a good tune on a stock motor.

I don't think the compressors are the issue on our turbos, it's the turbine side. Too damn restrictive.

Unless you find a shop that is familiar with doing this I think just going to a 2871 would be easier.

Personally I like the feel of larger turbos that need rpm to spool and make BIG power up top. I don't even have my 3076 installed yet and I already wish I had gone with a GT35R.

They have different turbine wheels on the site I linked. And for someone who can do porting themselves this is a very good option for someone who just wants to hold boost to redline without having to drop the big bucks to to bt

hmm more reseatch needs to be done here. unfortunately I am neither smart nor knowledgeable enough to pioneer this turbo mod approach.

Someone who claims they can uniformly port housings by hand is surely going to lead to either surge issues or outright failure. I'd only trust a machine shop to machine the housings to fit larger wheels, THEN I'd send the housings to extrude hone for full housing enlarging and not just porting where a tool can reach.

But for all that effort and money, fuckin go big turbo.

No matter what wheel you install the compressor housing is going to need to be machined because different wheels use different heights and blade angles... the housings have to match those blade angles. It's not just a pull and replace type of thing. Then, the whole thing needs to be rebalanced too. By that time you're pretty much looking at a $600-$800 job with a rebuild, which is right where the modded K04 costs are at. Any 7mm wheel will fit, doesn't have to be a "stock" K16 wheel. Just look at the compressor maps of all of the K04 wheels and there are several that are upgrades for our stock K04 configurations.

This will be made much easier if you can get the K16 backing plate and compressor housing as well as the wheel. Then hope it fits on the CHRA of the K04.

Nice turbo! My tuner said that under load it performs perfectly and is capable of pushing some significant amounts of air. Considerably more than the stock k04 can. Plus to that he noticed that the EGT with BNR Stg3 is lower. Definitely good news.
What makes me excited is that the way the car pulls with this turbo. With stock manifold it spools just a tiny bit later(maybe 100-200 RPM), but then goes on pulling. Feels like you're in a fast subway train))) I like it!

Yep, but step one of the BNR upgrade is to toss the entire K04...LOL

Only the exhaust housing is reused from the stock turbo on the BNR S3.

Basically, the BNR S3 is a GT2871 that bolts right up for cheap.

Here is the link:

BNR Supercars - Bryan Nickell's Rotary Supercars - Mazdaspeed3/Mazdaspeed6/CX7

You can call Brian up to discuss the details or read through the multiple install threads.

You need to bend one of the stock coolant lines, and have provisions for the 2.5'' intake coupler, but other than that it is drop in. No custom oil lines, downpipe, or exhaust manifold required as the stock turbine housing bolts right up.

Another cool, but more expensive option is this housing ATP makes:

At the very end of the page, it notes that everything remains stock.

I believe Driver311 is using this option.

Correct! Except for the stuff that cld12pk2go mentioned above. But all that is as easy as breathing. No drilling/cutting/fitting/wrecking anything. At all.

Nope) That was the car of our Ukranian clubmate. It has 500+hp now and is heavily tuned.

Sorry for posting in this really old thread, but i have got hold on at slightly used K16 turbo from a Focus RS.
Is there any possibility that i can remove it from the old turbine housing and put it in the K04s ?

Thanks
