Default New Turbo

Hi guys, recently, somethings been going wrong with my turbo, like it stutters at high rpm's while boosting. I just swapped in a new motor too about 2k miles ago, and ever since then, its been acting strange, but turbo has been running fine before motor blew. Now that I got a new one, its acting strange. I took it to my mechanic and he says everything is connected properly, isn't leaking anywhere, so I'm thinking it may be time for a new turbo, it was just weird how it happened right after the swap.

Anyway, any good reliable places to buy the stock K04 turbo? My car is not modded at all, no internals, no nothing, so I'm planning on going OEM.

You say the turbo stutters...are you talking about the turbo making a surging sound, or is it the engine that isn't running smooth under boost?

One thing to take caution of is that whenever a motor blows is an opportunity for crap to get into the oil. The turbo is fed with oil. Crap in the oil is not good for the turbo bearings.

I would say everything wasn't put back together perfectly. It could be something as simple as a cracked EBCS hose.

And once you go green you can usually find used K04s in the FS section for cheap.

I actually just got back to get my CEL checked, and one of the first things that popped up is i have a misfire and could be a faulty spark plug. As I was walking out, guy with a 2.5 RS complimented me on my car as I complimented him and we had a talk and I smoothly told him about my problem, and he also told me that it could possibly be a spark plug problem, because at high rpm's while boosting, my engine is asking for more power, and a faulty spark plug is whats wrong.

(Keep in mind, i didn't tell him what I was there for, so he had no idea that my CEL read that i had a faulty spark plug)

Possible but not probable.

Spark blow out is a possibility, usually caused by bad plug/weak or bad coil under boost. Change your plugs first and see what happens.

As far as tuning goes, you should look into getting a cobb accessport.

I lean toward boost spark blow out from plugs being gapped too wide or needing replacement. Gap to .028".

You sir, are correct. I just replaced my plugs, and I checked the gap on the last ones and they were all around 40's and one was .050. I replaced all of em just Cuz it's probably the easiest and best $50 fix I could do, and it wasn't bad. Car runs great now, no more stutters.

I am now gapped at .032 though, should I close it even more?

Yes. You should close them more.

Mazda updated the specs for OEM MZR DISI spark plug gaps back in 2010. The correct gap specs are between 0.024" and 0.027."

See page 498 of the manual posted below.

Yes. Specs are in quote above. I use .026" Please note that the iridium is very easily damaged so no scraping against the fine wire tip, or you will ruin it. Be careful. Keep your gapping tool totally away from it and only on the ground strap part.

Will anything happen if i keep it at the .032 gap right now? I won't be free until the next 2-3 days and i have to drive my car to work. I mean it shouldn't be horrible... right?

You can run it with that gap temporarily, and you may not even run into spark blow out problems.

If you want to avoid spark blow out, you should close the gap to within spec.

The more power mods you throw on your car the more air and fuel is rammed into the combustion chamber. At some point the stock ignition won't be able to deliver a strong enough spark at that gap.

You'll be ok short term. .032" was spec for a few years for OEM. Gapping them down is better.
