(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Ok, so I've spent hours searching trying to answer all of my questions and trying to figure out the right questions to ask. I'm having the Mazda dealer put in a new motor and rather than replace the turbo with the shitty K04 I decided to get the BNR S3. What I don't know is what else I need if I don't plan on tuning it yet. I did order a larger inlet but other than that everything else is stock. If I'm leaving the BNR at the stock 14 psi for now can I just stick with the stock EBCS for now? Do I really need the Angel at all or have to worry about overboost for now? Should it just bolt up and run fine or will it run like shit without out at least some kind of tune? If a tune is required I have my doubt's whether the dealership is going to be able to do that or what. Any responses are greatly appreciated as I've been trying to figure a this out for a week now. As a side note I'm thinking about getting a rear motor mount while I'm having all of this done. Anything to reduce the terrible wheel hop and torque steer. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score you need the whole fuel pump thingy. start with basic mods, then as you progress on this platform with knowledge you should put the BNR on.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Obviously if the op is having the dealer replace an engine he has limited knowledge. I will say that having them install the bnr s3 without tuning or supporting mods is going to make for another engine being needed in a hurry. What happened to your old engine? Do you have fuel pump internals? Running a catless downpipe?

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Would the dealer be capable of a tune? I haven't gotten to the point of researching tuning yet since I didn't know if I'd need one. My concern is that they won't be able to but I don't have a K04 for them to put in it for now. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score There's quite a few tuners on this forum that know what they are doing. To have a tune on your car you need a Cobb Accessport V2 or V3 doesn't matter. A dealer is not capable of a tune. You will need to contact one of the tuners on here for the best results. Stratified, Freektune, or Nishan to name a few. This will run you about $200 but the tune is tailored to your car. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Cobb AP is just the tip of the iceberg.....you would need HPFP internals $350, at least a downpipe $300 or more, and a tune $200. Plus personally I would get at least the RMM as far as non-performance mods go.... Sheesh....good luck when the savages on the forum see your original post. Go ahead and start lubing your anus now.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Yeah, I was really dreading making this post because I knew some of the replies I would get but I was having too hard of a time trying to figure things out on my own for the past week. I wish I would have made it sooner though because now I'm gonna have to pay to have the turbo and inlet shipped back on top of the original shipping costs. I'm definitely not ready to start tuning to this level and don't have the money for all the extra things I didn't know I'd need. I probably won't do much with it until the K04 I'm gonna have to get needs replaced again. Unless anyone has any other ideas that's what I'm gonna go with. I really appreciate the helpful replies because otherwise I probably would have made a big mistake just dropping the BNR in there. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Am I risking anything by having the BNR installed without a tune for a brief period of time before a tune? My main concern is that the dealer isn't going to be easy on it pre-tune. If I could get by with a V2, GS EBCS, and fuel pump then I might still do it. I was originally looking at the full cost of a fuel pump but the upgraded internals are about half the price. So I'd be looking at almost another $1000. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Even with a k04, you need the rmm. The accessport should be considered a should buy also. The hpfp internals are needed when opening the flow up, ie.exhaust turbo ext. The etune is just smart, to get a good safe tune for mods. No zzb You can have a safe daily mid 13 second car. With all that, a bnrS3 and downpipe= low 13 to mid 12s. Safely.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score My original goal was just to have a better more reliable turbo for now. I'm not worried about numbers at the moment. It basically sounds like about another $1000 than what I planned to stick with the BNR. I definitely won't be able to afford a downpipe for now though on top of everything else. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I'm confused. Did the new motor you're swapping in come with a k04? If so I would hold on to the bnr, and start your mods with AP, AT Internals, and RMM. Enjoy the car and slowly get all you're supporting mods as you can afford them. Then when you have what you need you would have enjoyed the k04 and the progress you've made. When your mods/funds permit you can then install the bnr that you held onto......and probably sensually caressed for several montes. That's what I would do.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Guys, you are looking at this the wrong way. His current goal is not increase in power. His goal is a non-smoking turbo! So he actually made the right choice with the turbo! You can get it tuned to have just about the same power as a k04, which means you dont need HPFP upgrade FOR NOW! Do this: 1) Buy a used AP V2 for $300 tops! 2) Buy a Freek OTS Plus Map for $75: Freektune - Mazdaspeed3/6 Freek OTS plus map 3) Install turbo 4) Drive out the dealers door, park it and install AP + flash the tune 5) Win win! If you want to turn up the boost later you WILL need HPFP Internals. But with close to stock power it's not required! Sidenote: You might need a small 2 - 2,5" coupler between intake and turbo since the BNR inlet in slightly bigger than stock.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I wouldn't trust the mechanics at the dealer to stay out of boost. They are going to have to test drive it after the motor install. Those guys typically are just certified parts changers. Not many are competent when it comes to performance. If you go this route make sure you talk directly to the mechanic doing the install and tell him not to get into boost and why. Use words like "it needs to be tuned for the turbo or you will blow shit up"

| Not Ranked : 0 score Send the s3 back and get an s1. Your not looking for more power it seems, so you don't have to worry about all this other stuff with tuning and such. I think that's your best bet, cause you obviously were a little impulsive. That's just my advice to you. That way you can drive your car and go home, good luck. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score When I installed my BNR, I had Lex at Stratified tune me. He recommended a Boost Dial with the stock ECBS vs. a 3-port. I don't know if it will be necessary at stock boost levels. I would suggest talking to a tuner directly to be sure. I already had an intake/TIP, DP, and HPFP, TMIC, and AP when I put the BNR on. Of that list, the AP for monitoring and tweaking the tune is the only thing I would consider necessary for a safe install. You won't be able to use the turbo to it's full potential without full supporting mods, but if you're even considering going big in the future, you may as well do it now. The S3 is about the same price as a new K04. The only extra expense will be the AP, which you really need anyway, and, possibly, an ECBS or Boost Dial. Do you mean a new TIP? As long as you keep the stock size MAF, you should be fine. If I had it to do over again, I would skip the stock size SRI/TIP and go straight to a 3" or larger. Keep the stock stuff for now, spend the money on an AP, then go big MAF after you get an upgraded HPFP

| Not Ranked : 0 score You could have donated $25 to the site and snagged the one for sale right now for $330. And then have access to the shop manuals and many other good things. Good luck with everything. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Justin at Freektune was really helpful. He doesn't think it's a good idea to do the S3 without the HPFP internals even with the tune. I'm just gonna go with the S1 on the stock map for now and then get the OTS map shortly after. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I dont see why the S3 is not a good idea with a tune (without the HPFP upgrade)? With a tune you can limit load and be safe...then when the cash comes in, buy the HPFP upgrade...

| Not Ranked : 0 score How many miles on the current turbo? Was it smoking? Maybe you could just use that k04 for now? Once you want to mod and have the money start with fuel pump and accessport.

| Not Ranked : 0 score To the OP: Congratulations on making it this far ... I am in a similar boat as you, and have spent months (seriously) on this forum trying to determine everything required to run the BNRs3 safely. Keep reading. There is ALOT of information on this forum once you get past the trollers. It is a great place to be. Congratulations on your first modifications, and welcome to the darkside. Good luck with the BNRs1. Any of the aforementioned E-tuners can help you out tremendously.
