FWIW the service manager said i'm the first MS3 to even mention the MTOL so i'm the first he's seen that hasnt gotten the "free turbo" with as much smoke as i was getting. He didnt know there was a new part number for the PCV valve unti I provided him the paperwork from Mazda. (of note there were 4 RX-8's on the racks getting "free engines" so you have a basis for his terminoligy)

You got paperwork from Mazda with the new part number?
Or when he looked up the PCV valve it gave 2 part numbers, old and new?

Just trying to clarify.

The work was under warranty and to be honest I didnt ask for a side by side comparison of the valves like I SHOULD have due to a nasty viral tonsilitis infection i've been fighting. The infection plus the meds have made for a rough week and a half.

Part number: I didnt bother to pick up the receipt (was craving chicken noodle soup and bedrest at the time) and his mention of part number was when I called for the appt and gave him the MTOL # he looked it up and said that there was indeed a different part number (once again, I should have asked if it was a "X" to "X-a" or entire new part number but didnt think of it.)

If the darn thing works then i'll call him up monday morning and get the two part numbers and advice for others looking for the warranty application.

Hope that helps!

John @ PTPerformance installed his fix in my '08 MS3 this afternoon. Several MazdasNW.com members are now testing this and so far the results are amazing. Install takes minutes and the results are (or at least so far) are solid. I pulled up and started blowing smoke almost immediately upon idle. Shut the car down, installed, restarted and let it sit there running for 15 minutes. Initially, she smoked as the residual burned off but within two minutes the smoke was gone. I then drove home hard and fast (maybe 40 miles) and let the car run at idle in the driveway for twenty minutes. No smoke.

It should be interesting - as Sonny stated in a previous post there are several of us from MazdasNW who are going for a long (and likely fast) drive out around the Olympic Peninsula here in Washington this Saturday. Sonny has the Mazda fix and Eazy and I have PTPerformance fix. We will compare results and report back.

Big thanks to John @ PTPerformance. Also got to see an SRT in his driveway that when re-assembled is expected to push maybe 900whp. OMFG...

This is the part that really pisses me off. I even spoke with my service manager on this topic. I asked him specifically what the issue was with someone like myself changing my own oil. He said there really isn't one, unless something major happens, and then you rely on the MNAO regional rep to decide whether or not you're gonna get fixed. My arguement was simple, I am competent enough with tools and use an oil that far exceeds the standards set by the OEM for the car, and change it on regularly scheduled intervals. I keep my findings in a spreadsheet for reference, and I have 'records' of it all.

His reply was that I could take the oil and filter to the dealer and have them do it for $15, and they'll keep a record of it. My thoughts on that were simple, I don't need to pay you extra money for something I can do myself equally fine.

I've decided that from here on out, I will get a UOA on every other change. If they want to question the validity of the oil, I'll use these sheets as a reference, and if something happens (god forbid), I'll fight them, and if necessary, seek legal action to prevent them from taking advantage of owners.

Sorry, rant over now.

I buy all my filters from Mazda and have them put the sale in the database along with a mileage reading when i'm there.

Then do the change myself.

Hasnt been a problem so far.

@alpine: thanks for chipping in extra info! I drove the GF's car into work today as I had to drop her off at the airport at 5:30am (I hate 5:30 am BTW) so monday will be my next opportunity to use the internets with an update.

So, the Mazda fix is just a new model PCV valve and that's it? What's it do different than the old model valve?

A car with PTP's fix and one with Mazda's new valve were both on a local drive yesterday. It is being reported on the local forum that the car with the PCV valve exhibited some smoking while waiting at a construction zone. The car with PTP's fix didn't smoke all day.

I wonder if it would be detrimental to have both the upgraded OEM PCV and the PTP fix on the car?

If this helps to reduce knock, I think I need to pick it up.

I would like to get my hands on the new PCV valve. Since mine is in the valve cover, I can swap it out in about a minute and do some testing. I could easily test combination's of the PCV valve with and with out PTP's fix. My results may not be good for everybody though since I do have the PCV relocate.

+1 on this new valve - i took the online tsb into the dealer that had actually replaced my turbo last week and they told me they knew what i was talking about but the part wasn't out yet - i wish someone would post this part number so i could try it in conjunction with the ptp fix (i just ordered)

Going back into Mazda tomorrow as Erich reported there was a single unsubstantiated report of a small amount of smoke comming from my car. (will get the part number then)

Note that only 1 person (out of 12) saw this and no photos were taken. it was not viable from the drivers seat and I was completely unaware of it. Also note that we sat at idle approximately 7-8 different times for periods of 5-10 minutes due to road construction making 1-way roads. Either way, this new valve has reduced the smoke >90% if not completely.

So before you guys go off the deep end on the Mazda fix not working at least SOME proof should be required.

Was more worried about the phat ticket I got than the oil smoke.

Took the car into mazda as the guy on the drive said he saw smoke.

Mazda could not replicate any smoke (neither could I last night) and is keeping the car overnight as the NW Mazdaspeed rep will be there tomorrow. He is also looking into the misfire issue I have (as well as others). Will hopefully update you with GOOD news tomorrow.... but you know how dealers are... Hope for the best, settle for "not negative".

Will also get Mazda's take on having the CPE DP installed for all of this. expecting some friction between us there, but Magnesson Moss is on my side!

You are a braver man than me, to leave your car there with a Downpipe on it knowing that the NW Mazda rep is coming.
I would have run faaaaaar from there as soon as I heard the words "NW rep" and "tomorrow" in the same sentence.

Me: "Yeah, sorry, cant leave my car tonight I am leaving on a trip, I'll bring it in another time that is more convenient, thanks for your help." or words to that effect.

Good Luck.

Magnesson Moss is on my side!
Lemme see......
People put a downpipe on and start smoking. People put stock pipe back on and stop smoking.
Not so sure about Magnesson Moss being on your side.
Especially after PTPs fix, which basically makes up for the change in pressures after installing exhaust mods by installing a metered pill.

Once Again Good Luck.

Just an FYI. I have the smoking turbo issue after prolonged idle and Mazda switched the oil to Synthetic 5W-40 which did nothing. Mazda just called me to inform me that I am getting a new Turbo and the PCV fix. When I do get the paperwork I will scan it. However I won't be going in for a couple weeks yet.

Stock vehicles are also now smoking, which is why Mazda has engineered a new PCV. Proving that the aftermarket exhaust is not the cause, but rather something that exasterbates a problem that is masked by the cats (they burn off the oil smoke) in the stock exhaust system.

So if the turbo is changed out for a new one.. that completely fixes the problem right?

Correct, the stock PCV apparently doesn't allow enough vacuum through which results in pressure build up inside the crankcase, thus putting pressure on the journal bearing, thus forcing oil past the seals into the exhaust or intake side of the turbo. Most of the turbos that were replaced under warranty were probably fine.

Probably. I used to pick up turbos from the JY for projects and, barring the ones that had FOD, most of them were fine w/o rebuilds. The smoking that caused the turbo to be junked were worn-out engines or failed PCVs, imho, most of the time. This conclusion falls in line with that experience.

If the darn thing works then i'll call him up monday morning and get the two part numbers and advice for others looking for the warranty application.

Hope that helps!
Bump for an update on new part numbers. Thanks.

So I just got my car back after all the smoking I had. Good news is that the car runs better than before, and I was given a brand new turbo. Bad news, no new PCV fix. So I think this is only a temporary fix until the PCV fix is released.

Now I am in Canada and we are a little slow when it comes to Mazda fixes. I was actually speaking to the District Service Rep who looks over any major warranty repairs and he gave me ZERO grief about mods. He even liked the powder coated MazdaSpeed Intake and Turbo Inlet pipe. Mazda Canada knows about the issue, and he said the fix they have in place right now is just the turbo swap, if the oil change didn't help. He seemed to pretty knowledgeable and said that he does not know of any PCV fix that is ready yet.

So noone else in the states has heard anything about a new PCV? No dealers around here had any idea either. Sounds like that may have just been a bunch of bull and Mazda is still working..

I looked back, I got the info the beginning of July, so that '90 days' would put us at the beginning of October before we may see the new parts available. Just a heads up.

But I thought we had a couple of reports with people already getting the updated PCV valve. Now everybody is saying it isn't yet available.

Yes, there were people 'claiming' that they got the fix, but couldn't provide any part # for the fix. IMO, until I see something from MNAO, it's not out. I'm sticking with what my source gave me as a timeline, and that puts us at Oct for a fix.

Can you get a copy of said TSB and post, especially if it differs from the first post?

Most dealers won't hand out copies of TSBs or at least Lexus tells us not to but next time I'm by the Mazda dealer I'll definatly ask.

Why are you guys waiting around for a part number? Get the PTP fix and be done with it.

Been there, tried that, and haven't had the result I was personally looking for. I'm not smoking, but the knock hasn't improved, and I'm hoping that the new PCV fix from Mazda will do what the PTP fix did not.
