Angry PCV PTP Fix for Turbo Burning Oil

I am a recent victim of an 07 MS3 burning oil in the turbo. This presented itself as occasional white exhaust both while idling and at high RPMs.

Mazda in their infinite wisdom replaced the Mobil 1 5w-30 I've put in since I've owned the car with 5w-40 synthetic and called it a day. Sure enough a week later the smoke returned while idling at a red light.

I'm furious with how Mazda has handled this but scouring the webs I keep hearing people refer to this cheap "PCV PTP" fix. I'm an avid do it yourself'er but I'm not familiar at all with what this fix is or how to go about doing it.

If anyone can provide info or tutorials on this fix, the parts involved, and how to get started, I would be infinitely appreciative.

Also I just came across this forum (I had previously been using mazda3forums.com). This seems like a very rich welcoming community and i apologize I've violated any rules with this post.

http://www.pt-performance.com/showPr...&cID=4&pID=260 order the pcv pill. It's like $30. Pull the tube that goes from your valve cover to your air intake, pop the pill in the metal tube on your valve cover, put the tube back, hope your smoking issue goes away.

Not to sound like a complete idiot...but how does this hose detach? I don't wanna break anything cuz mazda will no doubt charge me a fortune for a plastic elbow. The plastic elbow fitting that attaches to the valve cover nipple has two green tabs. I'm guessing that you don't just pull it off right?

I ordered a "PCV fix" from PT-P today...just trying to figure things out before it comes. Do the instructions with the product explain how to remove this fitting?

I recently switched to 5-40 and it decreaded my smoking issue. still smoke but I would think it's condensation more than the oil, 45 deg temps outside. I'm gonna order the pt-p pill as soon as I get paid just to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have instructions or a tutorial online on how to install this thing? Also does it void your warranty?

You can remove it before a dealer visit. AND I'm pretty sure I just told you three posts up how to install it......

What does it matter that it's an 07? Also people are STILL ordering PCV fixes and having luck with them....I don't know why people would be removing them when they've helped so many people....

everyone i know with a PCV pill, removed it b/c it was causing probs. secondly, it matters that he has a 07 b/c his turbo could be going bad and thats where the smoke could be coming from.

so he needs to make sure the dealer checks the turbo

Is it not the same turbo on the 08's and 08.5s though?

The PCV didn't cure the smoking for me, but it deffinitely thinned it out. I got a bnoon bolt and my smoking went away. I didn't remove the PCV pill though because I figured it was part of what helped my smoking....I haven't had any issues with it.

Cats just cover up the smoking....the problem is still there. There's no reason a car should smoke just because you free up the exhaust flow....

no. 07's and 08's had the first version of turbos and i cant remember what year they change them. i think they may have started during the 08 models but the 07's def had the first versions that were going bad.

what weight and brand oil are you using? im still running stock DP but as said, i was getting smoke here and there with 5w30 mobil 1 and amsoil. switched to PP 10w30 and no more smoke

Trust me, he didn't cure anything with that high-flow cat.

he probably didnt cure anything, rather, the cat is now buring the remaining oil in the cat instead of sending it out your exhaust pipe.

OP:

Take it back to the dealer and they will most likely replace your turbo-im assuming your still under warr. I would only get the ptp fix if your warr was up.

I have a stock exhaust and can cure the smoking issue temporarily just by changing my oil with the same 5W30 I always use. My smoking would start about 2000 miles after every oil change, obviously due to the oil thinning out after a while allowing it to squeeze past the turbo seal and burning off in the exhaust.

If I drive the car like a granny it will not smoke. It only smokes after going WOT and letting it idle for a couple mins. I'm sceptical about the restricor pill curing smoking after WOT runs because the breather line connected to the intake tube is how the crankcase evacuates pressure when in boost as the PCV valve is closed. That's why you see oil film in the intake tube and intercooler, and why I'm considering a Dual OCC setup from Matt.

In my opinion the pill will be effective when the intake manifold is in vacuum, but will cause more pressure buildup in the crankcase while running in boost. The excess pressure in the crankcase is what is keeping the oil in the turbo from draining back to the sump at the proper rate, thus causing it to leak past the seal.

Common Mazda, where's the damn PCV system fix?

Edit: Is PTP still testing their PCV system relocate?

I have been running the pill for a few thousand miles with no problems... Car still smokes unfortunately, but I haven't taken the pill out because I haven't had any other problems with it in...

PTP pvc pill works, no smoke and no KR since it's been installed.
Had a little KR at first, but this is normal until the crap gets sucked out, now no KR and happy motor.
If the PTP pill doesn't fix all the smoke get the bnoon bolt and you are golden.
There are some PTP haters who don't want to admit that PTP has fixed the problem for a lot of folks.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give it a try when the part comes.

I would of thought the opposite...as in, i would of first tried prying the green tabs outward away to clear the rim on the metal nipple but i guess thats wrong.

I had the pill installed for awhile. Back then I didn't actually have a smoking turbo. But this last week it started to smoke all of a sudden.

I took the pill out one day when I went to inspect it and realized the damn thing fell way back into the PCV line itself and had lodged itself sideways. I was NOT impressed.

put an oil restrictor pill on your oil feed line and the smoke at idle will disappear. i guarantee it. the smoke at WOT is another thing. the only way to get rid of that is to trade your car in for an N/A whatever.

Nobody else makes oil feed restrictors for our banjo bolt style feed lines do they? That's why I still sell my restrictor banjo bolts... :phillyb:

My bolt is the only thing that works for me 100% as with only my PTP pill installed I get smoke on decel in gear and can still smell it at idle even though the visible smoke is reduced. I still run the PTP pill since it does increase crankcase vacuum, which is still a very good thing.

I have had a catch can, 5w-40 oil, the valve cover breather fix and the bnoon banjo bolt at the same time, and I still burn oil and smoke like hell at gas stations and stop lights lol. The only thing that seems to help at all was the bnoon banjo bolt, and only temporarily. Big turbo seems to be the only for sure fix.

Do you have the very first version with fitment issues or the second revised version that is suppose to fit tighter? I just bought the second version (still on the way to me) so I hope the second one is ok.

What worked for you? PCV fix or oil restricter?

I just installed mine today (purchased last week). I presume mine is the 2nd revision which fits tighter, but wow was it tight. I had to actually file it down a bunch (kept it circular don't worry) and make it smaller as there was no way it would fit in my valve cover.

O yea, and it still smokes like no other. So either it didn't work or it takes a while.

Supposedly it does take a bit. Something about burning off the excess that's already accumulated. So don't give up hope yet.

bnoon, what does your bolt do exactly? I'm interested in buying one. Do you have a webpage that goes into detail about the bolt and how it works, and also sells it?

Thanks.

My restrictor bolt is nothing special, it works just like every other oil feed restrictors on the market except that it's built for our banjo bolt oil feed line. The others are all NPT style threads or pill inserts that will not work with our oil feed system.

My bolts are sold through paypal. brad@bnmotorsports.com is the payment address. I have a post in the speed 3 "how to" section on this site with install pics and even how to make your own if you have the tools and knowledge to do so.
