You sir are a fucking genius. Thank you so much and yea whenever you sell them I am in. Make sure you make some bucks on this for the amount of work you put into it and the fact that it will solve the one problem that stands in the way of me doing anyting more to this car. I cant stand the fucking smoking at a stop light.

Don't worry it will start to smoke with the dp with a cat delete. The tip will always get black due to the car running rich so that you will have to live with. What I dont want to live with is clouds of blue smoke from time to time.

So if I'm swapping my turbo and I have all braided oil/water lines should the smoking go away?

The Garrette GT/R turbos have ball bearings which allow the oil to flow through very quickly where the plain-bearing type K-04 provides quite a bit of resistance to keep it supported by the oil film.
According to more than one remanufacturer of K04's specifically, we are safe at .06" or above to support normal long bearing life on our turbos. VW/Audi crowd have been running restrictors for years on similar bushed bearing turbos without issue. It's actually where I got the idea. I couldn't find one single turbo Cobalt SS person with an oil/exhaust issue on their K04's.

Could be they were loath to authorize replacement turbos as they "knew" it was "normal"?

Mine will smoke every now and then when stopping from a light throttle cruise. I think it has more to do with oil/turbine temp variances than pure oil pressure.

I also think this turbo turbine/compressor leak at low (turbo) rpm phenomenon has more to do with the engine failures than the PCV system. The PTP oil hydrolock failure speaks volumes to me..... YMMV
Before my DP/RP, I had MAYBE 2000 or so miles on it. As soon as the exhaust was modified it smoked. Always been babied, always ran for 30-60 second before shutoff. Always smoked at idle since then, no matter if it was light cruise or full boost hard run. Cold or hot.

I don't believe the hydrolock failure story, unless the catch can wasn't emptied and it sucked it all in all at once... the stock PCV lines wouldn't hold enough oil to hydrolock an engine IMHO. Something about it just doesn't sound right to me.

If you're going to a GT style turbo, those have ball bearings and need to be restricted as well. However, the discussion here will not help you as ball bearing turbos need smaller restrictors, which many of them already have installed. As who you are buying the kit from what is recommended.

I have darksun's turbonetics 60-1 t3/04e. I'm pretty sure he had gotten it with the standard bearing, but I could be wrong.

You would need to contact others with that center section to know what is needed, if anything, for oil control on that particular turbo. You can lock up many turbos by over-oiling, just as easy as not enough oil.

Updating the first post with pricing information for those that want to try it out.

i think this is as easy as taking out the old bolt and just putting this one in. its right on top the turbo too so it should be easy access.

I'm at a .07 right now. I still get an occasional "poof", so there is still something going on elsewhere. A combination of PCV and oil pressure at the turbo, but it is still a HUGE improvement. I want to get my catch can and second PCV back on before I try my smallest hole at .06.

It's almost that easy. The TMIC has to be at least loosened up (if not removed if you have large hands or no small tools). Then you remove the top part of the heat shield from the stock manifold (if you still have the stock mani that is), then remove/replace the bolt.

I'm currently working on pictures and writing it up entirely for a booklet to send out with the bolts. I'll make it available to everyone here on the site too since I sent out a few bolts already without the booklet since they were purchased on short notice.

I've ordered bolts and they should be here Saturday or Sunday. I'll make them into restrictors and send out a batch on Monday at lunch and report back with "shipped" info. They will go out USPS Priority unless you want to pay extra for something with actual tracking info/etc.

No rush on this and I would rather install the one you think works best the first time around.

I can always get smoke after I go on the highway for a few mins and get into it a bit. When I come to a stop sign it will smoke. I was wondering if yours was like that and did it stop after the install.

And thanks for doing the testing for us I really appreciate it.

OK, just to let you guys know, I think working this oil pressure restrictor fix along WITH A CATCH CAN is needed to totally get rid of the oil/smoking problem. I've stepped mine down below the recommended minimum for a short short time and still got puffs. Granted it is MUCH MUCH less than with no restrictor, but I have to let you guys know everything as I go along. Dropped back down to a .065" and put back in my Saikau catch can and no smoke at all... not even a small tiny puff. Been driving with it 3 days now and all is well.

The sweet spot seems to be at .065" size, so that's what I made all of my bolts today. I've got 17 made, 5 are spoken for. 12 more waiting for buyers. I will not make any more for quite a while as they take waaaaaaay to long to make for what people would be willing to pay for them. Items paid for will ship Monday at lunch.

I will be doing a How To with pics etc, not only for the people that bought their bolt from me, but for everyone so that those with the know-how around a shop can make one of their own.

Items needed are: M12x1.50 pitch by 30mm length bolt. Make sure the head of the bolt is large enough to seal against the crush washer/banjo connector. A .065" or so drill bit for drilling the hole into the side of the bolt. A 3/16"-1/4" or so bit to drill the bolt down the middle the long way. Drill press, drill press vice, and a LOT of patience. You may also need grinder or some other way to start the small bit into the side of the bolt without it "walking" on the threads. Those tiny bits break easy!!!

I'll follow up tomorrow and start posting the how to then.

Sent you a PM, not sure if you've gotten through all of them already. Just to reiterate, I would love to buy, I have the puff when accelerating from idle.

However, work computer eats up the paypal thing, so I have to use a check. I'm cool w/ waiting until it clears for you to ship.

Let me know, and send me your mailing address.

User anthony dechiara, you paypaled me the funds on Saturday. Paypal has put a hold on those funds for suspected fraud. Please login to your account and remove the hold or your bolt will not ship tomorrow as planned!!!

So how many bolts are you making on this run? For a total of ___ bolts?

Will more bolts be made in the future? (hopefully not)

Just posted the how to.

J-Villa, I made 17 more bolts yesterday and had sold 2 already, plus 1 on my car... 20 total this first run. I would make more, but I would really have to be talked into it since they take about 20 minutes to make and I only clear about $8 per bolt for my time once the shipping and donation are taken out of it. That = $24 per hour and I usually base things at $60 per hour.

Awsome. Make them limited run. 20 cars out of the thousands can be smoke free, and those people will have a very sought over bolt in their turbo.

Sorry about that, I'm currently in Indonesia on business and paypal freaked out over the weird IP I have over here. I logged in to fix it, but it will take a couple of days for the restriction to get removed. It's no problem for me to wait. Everything should be good in a couple of days. I definitely want the resrictor and you will definitely get paid soon.
Thanks

Actually, there are several reasons for me to make it limited run. The main one is that these MS3/MS6 cars tend to have different reasons for having this smoking problem. Several have fixed it with a catch can, others with a simple swap to 5w40 oil, others add a second PCV along with a catch can... me, I had to have catch can, second PCV, and oil restrictor to make it all work. I'll bet this won't work for everyone by itself either, but I documented that it is a step in the right direction. If it won't work for those that are trying it out, perhaps they can sell it to someone that has a catch can and is still smoking...

Second, I offer these up for people to try for themselves. I'm not in a position that I can refund everyones money after all of this. Investment right now is small, but I'm still in the hole on the whole thing by quite a bit. Going any farther right now without other people testing them would be stupid for me to do.

I've started the how to, and reserved a spot to add pics that will show others how to make more like I did. It's not like I'm the only guy in the world that knows how to use a drill press. If someone wants to make more, like say PTP or PG, they certainly can... and probably have better ROI than I do working out of my garage with the machinist contacts that they must have.

I started work on this one, but someone else can carry the torch.

I actually tried rasing my rpms like lene mentioned and it reduced smoke to almost nothing. I tried 800rpm and it worked pritty good. When do you think we'll see these bolts bnoon?

hmm...I must be slow but I've read both threads and have not seen the asking price for the restrictor.
Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks
