Default Should you feel the turbo "kick"

Hey all, this is just a general question about when the turbo is spooling.

I've only had my 2009 MS3 for a few weeks so I don't have any goodies yet like AP to monitor boost etc.. I do plan on getting one down the road.

When I first got the car I think it seemed like I had a bit of a "kick" in the pants when the turbo spooled if I gunned it >3000 RPM(4th gear). Now, a few weeks later, I don't seem to notice quite the kick that it had at first. I'm thinking maybe a boost leak cause it's the stock junky intake. I plan on making a leak tester and checking for leaks.

Now my question is, since I've never driven any other MS3(have driven a 2013 STI and 2013 EVO), should you feel a noticeable kick from the turbo spooling >3000 RPM?

This morning when I did the test it was 14C/57F which should be making plenty of power with the cold air.

Thanks for your helpful reply. I know this is a subjective kind of thing I'm just looking for a subjective answer(people's experience of how their car feels). I've been reading this forum even before I got the car however something like this I haven't seen answered before. No dealership here even has these cars in stock so I could compare. They are so rare where I am.

I know with mine, it lost that because there's 0 WGDC. Which means my wastegate actuator isn't working or there's a crappy tune on my car.

Therefore, 8 psi is less than the 15.5 psi on the stock tune. It could be a leak, but I think you'd be feeling boost cut or something if you had a leak.

@CaptainCode; The best thing you can do at this point is do a boost leak test and maybe look into some better clamps for the boost tubes. The stock worm clamps have been known to fail.

Without a way to monitor, it's impossible to say without guessing. It could be that you're getting used to it too.

Guys, don't be too hard on OP, at least he donated.

Thanks @DVM17; @SLOWHATCH; @El_Diablo;

Thanks for the WGDC/waste gate actuator suggestion, that makes a lot of sense that it could possibly be an issue.

Obviously I need an AP(been looking the last 3 weeks in the for sale section. Lots popping up due to V3 ). Just wanted to know how the car should feel when the turbo spools since the only comparison I have from experience are the STI and EVO.

Boost leak I had suspected and was going to test this weekend.

I had also thought maybe I'm getting used to the car now. Kinda hard to say although I still think there might be something going on.

I've been looking around the site. Seems most people are around Toronto area which is ~2 hrs from me. Not out of the question, maybe meeting up with them.

keep in mind also, you might have simply gotten used to it... people get in my car and freak out because of acceleration when I think I am simply driving and not pushing it... comments like 'your brakes are really good' seem to be common place...

^^^ this too. i know i experienced this with mine. that's why i bought an AP

yes you should feel a kick but not a whole lot around 3K. Now if you were sitting around 4K and punched it you should feel it a hell of a lot more. but at 3K, unless your already in boost, you won't get thrown into your seat. this is 3rd and 4th gear mind you.

Check your blow off valve, might be stuck open. It is hard to tell without a monitoring tool. Check if there are people in your area with an AP just to test things.

Thanks, yeah it is a wild goose chase/shot in the dark to see if I actually *do* have an issue without a monitoring tool(which I plan on getting soon). At least this gives me some things to check and I'm not ruling out it's in my head
I was more interested in seeing if I should be noticing the turbo more. With the loud exhaust and stock intake I can't hear frig all turbo spool.

I traded in my 2009 Mazda 3 for a 2008 Speed3 and it's still quicker than the 3 as is. With the trade in I paid under $9000 so not bad

Yes I feel like I'm in the MS3 boonies. I have only seen one speed 6 and zero speed 3s here.

$5 says you're just used to it. I'd also be willing to be that your last car had a lower hp n/a engine, like a civic or a corolla or something.

Take a friend out in your car, someone who hasn't driven around with you. Floor it and then ask them if they felt the kick. Then get some towels to clean up the passenger seat.
dead-zone likes this.

This. I paid $9500 bucks for mine with 67km's last summer. But as with your "kick in the pants" might be a boost leak you might as well just be used to it.

Well if you look at similar ones on autotrader I think it was a good price. Might be different in the USA(I'm in Ontario Canada) but 2007-2008 speed3 here is going for $13,000-$16,000 and 2013 with 7,000 km on it is listed at $40,000.
The one I got had 110,000km and the one I traded had 105,000km. So 1 year older and 5,000km difference not a big deal.

Bought an accessport on the weekend and cleared the code which was just a P0128 so I'll be changing the thermostat soon.

My car is fully bolted, I bought it like that. (Minus the Cobb ap I picked up) still though, when I test drove it.. I was like WTF this is almost too fast! Ill never want more power than this!

A month later: bought a Cobb ap and looking into a big turbo set-up.

Point of the story: Ive had a lot of fast cars. They always seem crazy fast at first but I always get used to them. I always want more. I'm sure your car is still as quick as the day you bought it. We just get used to it. Might I suggest the for sale section? Sounds like you are in need of some mods.

So you bought a fully bolted car....

without an AP?

and then you waited a whole month to get one?

Your car was either:

a) not fully bolted

b) meant to be driven by tards.

Not sure what the point of this is. It doesn't help the OP. I have an AP now.. And the car is fully bolted. The person who had it before me, sold the AP. Im not a tard though. Don't appreciate the judgement.

Yeah us Canadians have to deal with a decent premium over the US. Speed3's start hear at 30g when it starts at 24g for the US.
