stock K04 turbo rebuild, and how to make it better

Hi everyone, I recently blew my motor on my mazdaspeed 6 so I'm doing a rebuild and one of the things i need to rebuild is my turbo as it has shaft play in it, I'm just wondering if its worth rebuilding or buying a new turbo? if I rebuild it what kit would you suggest and is there anything I can do to make it better or more durable then the way it is factory? I don't want to do all this work to it and then have something go bad shortly after I have it all together. Any input would be appreciated.

First off, you need to research before asking questions like this. A lot of people will jump on you very quickly if you don't.

To answer your question, a used k04 can be picked up for $150-200 and a rebuild kit is $100 and your labor... A BNR will run you about $1000 and does not smoke like a k04 will eventually. So that's your call on what is worth it to you. Personally, I would just go BNR.

Yes. You're going to want a tune no matter what you do because the stock mapping is shit. $200 is the going rate for an e-tune though, so not as bad as some platforms.

Yes, you will have to re-tune and there are at least 3 benefits I can think of:
1. the BNR/garret GT/GTX turbo will not smoke;
2. you will get more power from your engine, safely;
3. you will shift the torque curve in the upper RPM thus protecting the engine from the monster torque below 3000-3300rpm.

Whatever you change to your turbo you will need aftermarket fuel pump internals, of course.
