Yes, not all K04's are the same. Ours is still shit. Audi's don't have the displacement that we do.

hahah yes that i know

since this is an OEM replacement i was asking more along the lines of its advertised "bolt on"ness

the BT guys are usually going top mount nowadays and the OP and I both want simple stock replacement. no rerouting water lines/oil lines etc

They are bolt on in that they can bolt on to the stock exhaust mani and downpipe, that's it. You need to rework oil and coolant lines. You need a new tip. I don't think they will work with the TMIC.

And I don't know anyone who is top mount turbo on an ms3.

If your tip fits the stock turbo, it won't fit a bt.

Those are all MS6s. If there was a topmount twinscroll manifold available for the MS3 I would have been all over it.

Nah, it's exactly what I thought it would be. I needed a replacement for my dying k04 and figured I would get a bit of a performance bump at the same time to what I felt was within the stock bottom end's ability to withstand reliably. I wasn't expecting it to exceed the stock clutch's limits, but there isn't much data on big turbo speeds in road racing type environments and didn't think I would be so knock limited, but those things would have happened with a larger turbo as well.

I will probably upgrade again to something 3071/3076ish when there is a twin scroll setup available so I can push the boost a bit more on the top end without losing transient response. The BNR can handle 22psi to redline comfortably, but in order to carry a 2.1/2.3 load to redline in the Texas heat it seems like I will need more like 26psi up top, which I wasn't expecting.

TL;DR notes:
K04 was dying/dead
Needed replacement ASAP
BNR performs great as a stock replacement with probably 30-50hp capability bump
Will be upgrading again when bolt on twin scroll setup is available due to stupid I texas temperatures.

I guess I should add:

K04 @ 290g/s in 80* ambient- shaft play

BNR @ 320g/s in 95* ambient - still working like a champ

So it's not just a power bump, it's a reliability bump as well.

Like I said, needed something right away cause I didn't feel like staying off the track for a year till something I really wanted was available.

You might be able to squeeze 400wheel by reall stressing the turbo, using meth, and possibly E85 to let you run assloads of timing, but I don't think that would be smart for someone who tracks the car cause you are going to hurt the reliability. I wouldn't expect more than 350 out of it reliably without getting crazy.

so then the problem is with earlier turbos.... not the design of the engine.

No. The problem is with the size of the oil restriction hole, or lack there of, combined with where the oil return dumps back into the block.
The new turbos have a revised restriction. Somethin that was easily remedied on the earlier ones as well. WITHOUT turbo replacement. Some engines also required more vacuum so that that the return line would actully return, and not choke up. Hence the new valve cover vent kit. Not a new turbo.

It's a tsb.
New valve cover. New tip, and some misc. parts.
