Default Treadstone TR8 vs TR8L

TR8 Intercooler- TREADSTONE PERFORMANCE

I'm leaning towards the TR8L, more flow capacity should make this good eh?

I used Cobbs piping kit with the TR8L and it was pretty much an exact copy minus the end tank mounting points. The TR8L has a larger single tapped hole vs. cobb's double tapped holes on each tank. So yeah go with the TR8L, works great on mine.

If I'm understanding things correctly, the TR8L flows more efficiently but at the expense of cooling capacity, no?

They say it exhibits less pressure drop from a less dense internal fin structure, which I can only surmise will cause it to suffer at least slightly in its ability to exchange heat...

It seems like if you're on the K04 (and have no plans to go BT), it might be smarter to use the TR8 (depending on your overall setup). Am I full of shit here??

What that told me was it was less resistant to flow, so for motors flowing more air, pressure drop is less and it's probably just as efficient.

I'm not on k04 so I'm looking for something with flow. TR8L fills the ticket.

the specific reason I bought the TR8L is it fits without sticking below in any way. Low car+low hanging fmic=trouble and ghetto fitment.

Not so much, it is pushing my bumper tabs out because it's hitting the pipes around the fog lights area. I trimmed the bumper a lot but still no luck.

I guess I'm going to wind up getting the Cobb retro-fit kit.

Exactly what I am thinking.

maybe... I think the biggest problem is the thickness.

I have it mounted exactly where the pg core went using the bracket modifyed. If I mounted the core back a little bit and cut the piping it should fit.

It might work if I cut the pipe on the driverside so it's not such a long C bend, start bending up right after the core getting out of the way of the fog light. all I need is an inch or two.

Mounting the TR8L on the genjuan was super easy. There are open bolt holes where the PS cooler used to be mounted to, I made a couple L brackets and mounted accordingly.

Would the tr8l be the choice for a k04 car? It seems to me the tr8 claims to cool better due to the denser fins or whatever

So i went ahead and picked up the TR8 + COBB retrofit kit from Eric.

What all exactly am I going to need to mount the core correctly? Will I be able to use the supplied brackets that come with the COBB kit? Also, will I need to pick up some bolts from the local hardware store?

It seems like if you're on the K04 (and have no plans to go BT), it might be smarter to use the TR8 (depending on your overall setup). Am I full of shit here??
In this case, Chimmike running the 3076 could overcome some pretty decent pressure drop and fitting the best cooling core would be what I would do.

I know, old thread, but just came across it and thought someone else might have this question eventually.

My apologies for bringing this thread back up, but I am also doing my own FMIC setup and like others have asked, would the TR8 be the better option for someone who's staying with the stock K04? I know with the k04 a huge core isn't necessary. On the other hand, I felt that the Godspeed Type C may better suit my needs, but based on everyone's input it seems as though the treadstone is the better core afterall

Just go with the treadstone it's a more efficient core for sure. Plus if you continue to add mod's you'll be happy you went with the better core.

My thoughts are to stick with a TR8 especially on BT like finkle stated. Straight fins do not give as much surface area for radiating away heat. Might as well just go all the way and go tube and fin.

Well my TMIC tabs keep snapping so im going the fmic route and am going to be building my own. I have a guy who does fab for a living not too far from me, so I should be good to go if he can help me. Ive decided on the tr8l as my core and probably the cs racing universal piping kit. Anything else I should look at picking up? Am i going to have to cut the crash bar? and my occ is on the drivers side.... is that going to need to get moved?

Having a couple sets of hands on this project will make it easy to put together a solid how to for this combo.

FYI,

The TR8L is essentially on an indefinite backorder currently. They are in limited supply and Treadstone is utilizing all of them in their G35 turbo kits.

I was jerked around for 2 months before I gave up waiting and got the TR11 instead which was in stock.

Does anyone make something comparable to the TR8L, do you have to cut the crash bar with a TR8L?

The TR8L should fit without cutting the crashbar, but only barely. That was my original plan.

The TR11 requires a Sawzall...

I ordered a TR8L from Treadstone and they shipped me a TR8 instead. I called them up to see what was up with that, and they told me TR8L was designed for low boost applications ~10 psi or so. O... k... Can anyone confirm this?

Anyway, I have the TR8 mounted on the car with no crash bar modification.
