Default VTA experiment

So im postin this because i cant seem to find the answers I am looking for 100% ..new to this forum but not nee to cars. Ive heard and read about these cars throwing codes and running richer then usual when going from recirc to vta (without proper tune) and surging at idle and/or stalling.

I have a Forge bpv on the car, set up to recirc..I didn an experiment fueled by curiousity as to what it sounded like venting to atmos. and of course it sounds better but i became curious. I got no check engine light, stalled twice initially, then i let it idle a bit, surged only a bit from time to time..took it for a test drive. Slight throttle seemed a bit touchier if that makes sense. I didnt mind the backfire because it didnt happen often enough. So i drove it home to see if it would "relearn" this new setup and adjust accordingly. Got to a point where backfire happened not so often, surge/maybe stall only happened until operating temp was reached. I switch it back to recirc the next day but my main question is, after that long explanation, what kind of tune would need to be achieved to have the car run normally with a VTA setup?

This is correct. The Forge will stay open at idle unless you have a Guardian Angel regardless of tune. The air you will lose at idle will trigger a rich condition and a CEL. The GA will control the valve operation so that you can have your swoosh and not stall at idle or run rich.

Seriously man, I'm starting to think you're trolling us.

The answers to your questions are on here. If you are serious about a BOV and tuning for it, contact a tuner, pay them for a tune. If you're just asking questions because you don't want to read, then just stop.

Read every thread you can find about BPV's and BOV's on here, and you'll have a better idea of what your issues are. The search button is your friend.

As lex said the valve will sit open during idle. It's very difficult to tune for this as there really is no fix for what is effectively a hole in the intercooler piping. You could tighten the spring on the bov but then it will flutter at everything other than high throttle shifting.

The GA from stratified is really the only thing that makes it liveable. The sound changes slightly because the GA will pull the valve closed very quickly but this is necessary.
I have the GA and love my rice served with a side of rice, but shifting still isn't as smooth as when fully recirc'd. The benefit of the GA's overboost protection is good to, so it's a great device to have in general.

After talking to a tuner, he suggested trying a stiffer spring, i knew what to expect if it wasnt going to work with the fluttering and such but I tried every spring and shim setting just to see how things would act. I have the stiffest spring and both shims and didnt get the flutter, idle is good, no stalling, no flutter, backfires occasionally but no check eng. light. So i left it be, if i started to get any of the symptoms above i could just swap it back but so far its been giving me zero issues (knock on wood)

Also, these cars will always suffer from minor problems even when tuned for VTA. The problem is you can't 100% completely pull the fuel between shifts. A buddy on here was tuned for VTA and recently switched to OEM just for the dyno day and could notice a difference in drivability and response.

Sure it will sound better, but it won't ever run as good.

yea the shifts arent AS smooth as recirc and driving at a low rpm in traffic I can notivce a light difference.

A stiff spring will also slow down the valve response since a larger pressure differential is needed to open it.
