Default Not shifting into 1 3 5 sometimes

2007 speed6 123kmiles
Having trouble shifting into first, third, and fifth only. Second, fourth, and sixth lock right in. Sitting idle it seems to click right into all gears. However, the 1 3 and 5 year position has a lot of movement of you keep pressing forward. Not slop. It springs back. But when I try to shift into gear while driving, it seems to push it back out of place. Do not mistake this for popping out of gear. Once I'm locked in gear it doesn't come out. Now if I hold the shifter forward and then release the clutch before I let go of shifter, it will lock in gear. If I push shifter up all the way and let go, there is some type of force pushing it back and if I let go of the shifter before I release the clutch it will not go into gear. Because like I said, there is this pressure pushing back down on the shifter. I looked under the battery box and under the center console. Nothing is in the way or catching or worn. Everything looks good. What do I need to check? Thanks.

More information. I noticed at low speed it goes into 3rd fine. 1st shift basically doesnt work unless I'm stopped. Fifth mostly works at low speeds but feels a little resistant. This makes me think it is the mechanism that stops you from going into low gears at high rpms. I could be wrong. Seems really bad. Any ideas?

I checked the transmission fluid. It's good. I pretty much figured out how to make it work. If I cant get into 1st I can go to second then first and it will go. 3rd seems to always work now and if fifth doesnt go, move to 6th then fifth. I don't have to put it into the gear just move the shifter. Any ideas?

I tried to go in reverse yesterday and it did not want to go. By trying to force it into gear it caused me not to be able to shift into first third or fifth. Eventually it "reset" itself after a bit of driving and I was able to get all gears using the method posted above. Eventually it did go into reverse after a minute of slamming the shifter up a dozen times.

When was the trans oil last changed? If it has been a long time, drain and refill with XT-M5-QS then see what happens.

It was changed when I had the clutch replaced 6 months ago I'm guessing. Unless it doesnt need drained and replaced for that repair.

Motor mounts are fine. I changed the tranny oil and it didnt make a bit of difference. What stops you from going into gear when you don't have the clutch pressed? It feels like there is something in the way when you try to go into 1st 3rd or 5th.

1 day i droped a tool and forget to pick it back. It blocked the shift linkage a bit. You may check there if the linkage are free and not seized.

Than it could be the forks, check for some shifter seals replacement instructions here, it will give some infos about where it is.

Could also be shifter bushing and/or adjustement...

then inside the trans...

SOLVED
It is a bad shifter cable. It is all frayed and coming apart in one little spot near the firewall. I had to really search to find it. Now I need to figure out if shift cable is something I can replace myself.

heat from the turbo or exhaust, make sure you still have heat shield to avoid breaking the new one...

Okay I tried to fix the one I took out but it's really bad. Wouldn't be worth putting back in. Is the mazda6 or mazdaspeed3 shift cable the same? These things are expensive. Even a used one is 180 dollars.

I found a used one on ebay for 112 bucks shipped from this seller:
https://www.ebay.com/usr/salvageperf...53.m2749.l2754
Highly recommend. Ordered Sunday, received Thursday.
I followed this guide to replace:
How to Change Your Shifter Cable
It was high in difficulty because of the tight spaces. It requires patience and small hands. I happen to have both of those. It took a little over 4 hours to remove the shift cable and a little under 4 hours to get the new one installed. All by myself.
Wow it shifts so much better than it EVER did. It is extremely notchy now. Very happy with this repair. Thanks to everyone who helped along the way.
