Putting in new rear shocks - replace mounts too?

Hey guys, so don't know if the mounts are still good (car has 87k on it), but thinking of replacing them since will be replacing the shocks anyway. Thoughts? thanks

Most guys replace the top mounts while they're in there, but it's also possible to rebuild/repack the bearings if you'd rather go that route. There's a how-to on the forum that you can find; I followed it when I replaced my shocks earlier this year and haven't noticed any issues thus far. Takes lotsa grease but isn't a difficult process.

I think he's talking about rear shocks no bearings there. And you can get top hats/bearing for $25 from ford with a better design than our OEM.


For rear mount you will most likely need new bump stops but I don't see how that rear mount could fail other than the bump stops. Sachs makes a kit for like $35 and they come with boots too.

Derp, you sure are correct; apparently I didn't fully read the thread title!

Rear bumps hold up much better than front and may be reusable if you're on a tight budget; mine were still okay after 80k even though the fronts were like dry, crumbling toast. The rear mounts themselves shouldn't have any problems unless you somehow managed to crack one or something.

Thanks, I glanced and only saw the whole mounts, not just the bumps. What are the ford ones and do they fit in MS3 mounts? If it's not a direct fit I might just swing for the entire mounts. thx

I think the popular choice is to just get new OEM bump stops in the rear, although the front bumps are known to be garbage and should be replaced with a set from Ground Control.

I just replaced my suspension and with over 100k miles the rear mounts and bump stops were fine and completely reusable. Fronts, not so much.
