hello, any advice on the oil cooler

mazda cx7 2007 2.3 litre with turbo

I have been reading posts on this sight for a couple week regarding the oil cooler scam mazda has seemingly "had" me with as well as others. thought i would join.

I ordered one on ebay. took it to my regular guys (actually my wife did while i work) guy said he had a hard time i with it, also said there is actually 2?? I thought i had beat the scam when i found this part for 13$.

It's really irritating the fact that this part is designed to fail and there is no repair for it other than buying a new cooler. ridiculous.

i might have considered just selling it at the dealership as a trade in for another car however now i am in worse condition. the car made it home but my wife had to stop twice because the temp guage bout half way home just shot straight up.

trying to figure out

A) did this new part fail on the way home or was it failed from the get go?

and B) where do i go from here? can i put the old gasket back in?

the shop is closed, i don't know if my old one is still available and what condition it is in.

c) when he says "2" gaskets, are they identical? or are there 2 different ones.

any help is greatly appreciated.

i saw your name and BB pic on previous posts about this (just came up in a google search) you have had this problem correct?

did the RTV trick not work?

also saw where the other guy said he ordered the gasket from protege but there was no update on whether than worked for him. being in on that discussion was hoping you knew.

also when he says he ordered from "protoge" i looked for a website and couldnt narrow it down, can you tell me what website that was.

thanks for the advice on ebay, yeah not doing that again. its not the 13$ its the fact that my wife could have been stuck on the side of the road.

i have seen the cooler replacement online for as low as 336. plus 1.2 labor. i think the dealership (based on others posts) wants 650-700. not sure what an hour of labor costs. do you think its worth ordering and having them put on?

No I didn't have the problem. But others did and I think the part itself had to be replaced. It's a no drive thing now, so order from onlinemazdaparts.com, tow it to your shop and bite the bullet and replace it. Sucks, I know.

Before I get flamed again ... I found this thread in a search and it was the newest one on this topic . I'm wondering what's failing about the coolers ?
Is it the cooler between the filter and block ?
Its a weter cooler oil passage ?
Is there no way to bypass this and install a different cooler ?

Well I ordered it and tried to install it today on my cx7. No luck. The gasket it to small. The outer part of the oring, is to small. So I put some anaerobic sealer on it. Installed it and it leaked like whore. I couldnt repair the old seal so Im out of a car for the next few days.. Its the wrong gasket. There is plastic spacer that goes between the cooler and the oil filter housing.

I learned the hard way, So im hoping to get my money back from paypal.

Is there any way to stretch the new seal out ? I have boiled rubber orings to make them easier to stretch intop place to rebuild hydralic cylinder with non OE seals .
is there a grove it must sit in or us it 2 flat surfaces?

Looks like I'm WAY late to this party but whatever...

I had the same gasket go out, I found, on ebay, a new cooler with gasket from a dealer for $150, propped it up on a jack, drained fluids and replaced the part myself. The new cooler I bought had an outlet pipe that went the a different direction than the original part so I just used the old cooler. If it is a problem with the cooler, you might have to do a little "re-piping" to get it to work. I guess I just got lucky to find on online for so "cheap."

Another option I saw was oil cooler delete options, you can also buy aftermarket oil coolers that will connect to the block, you'd have to reconfigure some of the coolant piping but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
