Default How to: CX-7 Standalone Foglight Mod

Fog light standalone

I didn't like how the fog lights cannot be turned on unless the headlights are on, so I looked into the wiring tonight and here are what I used to bypass this setup:

Time: 1 hour
Tool: Wire stripper and wire crimper, your preferred gauge of wire (I used 18 gauge), male & female quick disconnects (4 female, 3 male), small flat head screw driver, filler, 1 wire splicer connector and electrical tape.

Here were some tools used:

Open the hood and locate this relay box on the passenger side:

Remove the cover and see the relay for the fog lights is the relay on the left. (Other models may be different. DIY is made with a Sport model):

Remove the fog relay and set it aside:

File down a male connect. For reference, the connector on the left is an unfilled one and the connector on the right is after filled.
]

Get the wires and quick disconnects and make 3 wires and another wire as shown in the picture.

Install the wires onto the relay like so and put electrical tape onto the 2 vertail prongs (when facing the prongs) then put the relay aside:

Remove the relay box by pressing on these 3 locations and pull the box out. The yellow narrow is where the connector that was filled down need to go in. The red narrow socket will be left unplugged:

Use the flat screw driver and separate the bottom cover of the relay box by pulling on these 2 taps on each side of the relay box:

Stick the flat head screw driver into an unused socket to make room for the wire to come through. Might have to repeat the step on both the front and back:

Afterwards, connect the male connectors to it’s original sockets and run the long wire through the unused socket hole that was gutted:

Install the wire splicer connector on the end of the long wire and tap the other wire shown below (it’s a red wire with silver dots underneath the horn relay):

Tuck the wire under the relay box and install the bottom cover back to the relay box and it should look like this now:

Feels good to see my own work:
]

Test the fogs now:

Great write up! Thanks! I did not have blade connectors so I just cut the wire and tapped into the wire from the horn relay like you did. Actually do not tap the horn relay cause the light will stay on even when the car is off. Tap into the pink wire which is only on with ignition on.

I can't see these pictures again... Is this from just my account not being VIP or the hoster needing to update his account on photo bucket.
