Question Door Lock

Not sure if this is the right thread, but it seems like it would be the right one. I was sitting in my car on my lunch break watching youtube with the car on. After I turned it off, I sat there with the key fob in my hand for a minute. Out of curiosity, I locked my car with the fob with me still inside. I noticed all my doors locked except the driver's side. It moved a little, but didn't fully engage. I tried it again to see if maybe it was just stuck or getting caught. It wasn't locking at all, with the fob or the switch next to the handle; I have to do it manually in order to get it to lock. Since I'm never really in my car when I lock it, I'm not sure how long this has been going on, but I'm glad to at least know I have to lock it manually for now.

I'm fairly inexperienced with cars, so could someone point me in the right direction? Is it electrical? Is it mechanical, like maybe a motor? I turned the car back on for a few minutes and tried it with the car on and off after. It didn't seem to affect anything. Also, trying to lock it makes a weird mechanical whirring sound like it's trying to engage, except it sounds like it's coming from the back half of the vehicle? And it gets higher in pitch the more I hit the lock button until I stop for a sec, or hit the unlock button, then try locking again.

It's actually designed that way so you don't lock your keys in your car....

I thought it only did that if the car doors were open? They were all closed. And it does it when locking it via the switch, which you can do when the doors are closed as well. Besides, that wouldn't explain why all other doors locked when the button was pressed, with the exception of the driver's.

I had to check on my car to make sure I'm not insane, turns out I am insane...

If all other doors are locking I would initially think mechanical. Get a dmm and check for signal at the switch when actuating

I'll have to check that out when I get off. I've been looking around and apparently the gen 1 actuator goes bad often. So it could be that. I'll have to see what I can do after I get paid.

Salvage yards near you?? This way you can practice tearing the door off, and get a replacement part

Not too sure about that. Maybe... Stupid question, but would a same generation Mazda 3 part work if I can't find a Speed? And would a sedan be different from a hatch?

Not sure about the sedan but any mazda 3 hatchback from 04-09 will have the exact same part.

Fuck Mazda door lock actuators. Anyway, mine also failed. I have used a door actuator from a base 3 sedan from 05. The part numbers were different and some slight modification was needed but it was easy.

Your problem is definitely the door lock actuator but it appears you already know that.
