OK, Compu-Smart MSFers

I'm having a HUGE problem with my computer right now. It is having errors using MS Word, causing the system to crash and go to the BSOD while I am writing.

I'm running an OLD computer, and admittedly, it might need replaced, but I can't do that right now. It's the holidays, and we have other priorities. But I'm also writing a book, so this shit has to stop.

My system specs:

AMD Athlon 3200+
2.2 GHZ
1.5 GB RAM

Windows XP SP3
MS WOrd 2000 appears to be the guilty program, since it ONLY happens during use of that program.

The BSOD error message I got last is:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP: 0X0000000A (Ox430F3FA3, 0X0000002, 0X0000001, 0X804DC4B2)

Best I can tell, this is either a faulty driver -- which seems unlikely, since I haven't installed new drivers or new hardware -- or the CPU/motherboard are going bad. But then why is it only happening in MS Word?

I have done a full virus and malware scan -- came up clean
I have done a system restore once to 15 NOV 10 -- problem persists

I just did a system restore to 1 NOV 10. We'll see what that does.

Anyone have any idea WTF is wrong?

Start with various test software for memory, HD, and CPU

For memory you can use memtest, run on startup for at least an hour. If it comes up with any errors, it's your memory

HD, you can use the diagnostics software from your HD manufacturer

CPU, you can run a stress test like Prime95

Thanks for the input. Turns out, my wonderful wife bought my Christmas/B-Day/Anniversary gift during black Friday madness. A brand new COMP!

So...never mind. LOL.
