I don't mean to bring up another issue.

Cleaned my EGR on Thursday of last week... I also ran into the TB issues with the coupling... just need to spend a little time with the right set of hands and ratchet to get to it. Put everything back together but now the car has rough idle. Its throwing a CEL 2187 which is idle too lean.... the tac bobbles up a little when in neutral coming to a stop also. Im guessing something wasn't connected entirely or tighten properly.. gonna have to look at the bay this week and see if I can easily fix it so I can get inspected. Otherwise the EGR code has been gone for a few hundo miles so far.

Good write up.

If anyone has any suggestions on the air leak / rough idle / new stupid CEL code let me know

Thanks

Funny you mention that. We broke it in the process of removal and had it hot glued back on with the nipple being clear.. But I guess that could still do it some how

Looks like that wasent the issue. I'm gonna guess I have a vac or boost leak somewhere now from removing and installing the parts. Fixed the TIP last night with a brass nipple that's tapped and has a perfect seal. Back to the drawing board

FWIW mine turned out the be caused by carbon buildup on the intake valves and not the EGR at all. I pulled the intake mani and decarboned the valves with dental picks and the car was good. I unplugged the EGR then after I was sure the codes were gone to prevent it from carboning up again cause 90% of the crap looked to be from the incoming EGR.

Just tried doing this today... everything was going fine until I tried to get the fucking 22mm compression nut thing off the pipe. First I had been planning on using one of those adjustable wrenches + PB Blaster... no luck. I figured if I went and bought a proper 22mm flare wrench it might work... 10$ later (and that was 50% off, wtf?!?) had my new wrench, and still no luck.

All I succeeded in doing was stripping it a fair amount as you can see in the pictures. Also, there is only enough room to attack it from one angle so I can't use any of the non-stripped sides. Anyone have any ideas what else I could try to get this piece of shit off? Oh, and what a stupid fucking design.

Cut the pipe off, then use a socket on it. IF that starts to round it more, user one of the reverse sockets...stripped nut remover or whatever they are called. Just make sure to have the nut remover thing on hand or available to purchase locally easily before cutting the pipe in case the normal socket doesn't work.

Thanks for the reply! I hadn't thought of cutting the pipe but that actually is a decent idea. Going to wait and see if any other ideas come out before committing to that.

Bust the rust. That crap I don't have here. If it's is rusted, it is not coming off with that wrench. Try removing the 4 screws on the too of the egr, push on plunger. If sticky, then clean egr, leave the pipe on. If ok, then that pipe is clogged.

You can remove it, more work ahead. Remove the 2 other screws on the other end.

Then follow the steps to remove the intake manifold. Yup, that can come off. It's time to clean your valves now anyway, regain power. Lots of how to's.

You will be able to get that pipe off then. Or say fuck it. Go VIP here. Buy a used Accessport for $350, and an egr removal or bypass kit. Then download ATR from Cobb, disable p0401 and p0403.

Then start tuning, even mildly, and enjoy

Thanks Raider. I already cleaned the EGR, was easy but was not the source of the problem - plunger worked just fine.

Intake mani removal... cool, didn't know that was an option. I think if I could attack this from all sides with more room I would be able to get it off. Unfortunately this weekend I don't have a backup car, a garage or help and I have to work tomorrow I think I'd probably best just try give up for this weekend and reinstall everything. If I look on the bright side, at least next time I remove everything it will be that much easier.. (especially those stupid worm clamps on the tubes that were rotated in directions that made it near impossible to get them off lol)

Maybe I'll give this another shot (with manifold removal if necessary) in a week or two when I have more time and help.

Cheers

-edit-
Oh, and the reason I don't want to go the AP route is that I'm planning on selling the car in 1-2 years and don't want to have the CEL when I'm trying to sell.

Well pretty Much every tool manufacturer makes a remote clamp removal tool. Best investment for car mechanics almost.

As far as the CELs u can disable the codes when u own it and remove egr. Then put ur egr valve and tube back on when u sell the car and re-enable the codes then and clear all the codes. You should be fine

Ah, yeah that would make things easier. There is a tool for everything.

And yes, that is a good plan if I could actually remove the EGR tube heh.. still didn't accomplish that. Just gave up for now and finished putting everything back together... I didn't have any leftover nuts/bolts and everything runs, so that is good news

Dude, you can unmarry and sell the AP then. So worth it. Especially with blocking the egr to keep that nasty shit out of the intake manifold.

Right, but then I unblock the EGR and sell the car and a CEL comes on and the guy who I sold the car to comes and murders me in my sleep

Hahaha well that works though, because the poor SOB will get a CEL, and then the dealer will have to fix it for free
I have absolutely nothing against attempted screwery of stealerships, but I'm planning to sell private... mo cash!

I have 14k on my '13 speed, is it really probable that my EGR is clogged? I reset the light once and it came back quickly.
I had an '09 which I drove to hell and back to 70k and only got a P0401 light once which went away within a few key cycles.
