Default Sand my oem wheel

I want to do a paint job on my stocker of my MS3.

I want to use my drill to sand (over by hand) all the surface of my wheel ... which tool do you suggest to me.

I'm not equipped to sandblast ... (I know it's the way)

Which grade of sand paper do I need ... to made the best job possible ... after I will try plastidip + glossifer. It's for my winter wheel ... 2 years in a row I made my paint wheel with (canadian tire primer) + (duplicolor paint). After each winter ... the wheel look like crape so I want to made the best I can. With a sand job + good primer (zinc) + plastidip (5 coats) + glossifer (2 coats)

Thanks for your help

I have been sanding my OEM rims for a repaint as well. Takes me about 4 hours per rim. I have been using 220 on my air powered orbit sander on about 25% of the wheel. The rest I do by hand with 220 followed by course and medium steel wool.

I have done a lot of refinishing in my time, prep work is the most important. Dont complain, you arent hand sanding the Speed6 15 spoker rims

if youre willing to pay that much, just have them powdercoated. otherwise just use the plastidip cans. no need for a spray gun unless youre doing the whole car

I sanded my wheels by hand when I had a honda. I can tell you that you do not want to be sanding them by hand. The coating that they put on rims are extremely thick and extremely durable. You will have a hard time, sore hands, and a sore back just from properly sanding two wheels. If you are that adimant about painting them yourself, you would be better off paying to have them sandblasted ( or whatever media ) by some local shop. I guarantee itll be worth it both in time and final product. 90% of the finished product is in the prep work.

If you are plasti-dipping then no sanding required.

These pics are just black plasti-dip with no prep work beforehand. The first pic is right after, the second is about a year and a half later with new england winter.

Yeah just use the cans like stated many times above no need to sand only prep is cleaning, I used soapy water to clean them then used Naptha (basically lighter fluid) to remove any oils or leftover contaminates and it evaporates in a couple seconds then sprayed about a can for each wheel, pull them off the car and use index cars around the lip to stop overspray from getting on the tires

You could sand it down to be even and the plastidip is thick enough to cover the minor imperfections

I'm using a ryobi multi-tool with 80 and 120 grit triangle sanding pads to get off the previous layers of paint and get down to the bare metal. I'm going to use metal primer after I get them all sanded down and then use spray paint and a clear coat... first time tackling a painting project like this so I hope it goes well! This is on speed6 wheels so it's taking forever. Also plan on filling in some curb rash with bondo filler.
