Default What kind of oil?

So I saw that the Speed takes 5W-30 but then I thought I read somewhere that if you are going to use synthetic oil it should be 5w-40. What do most of you use? I plan on using synthetic, would it be bad to use 5w-30 or should i defiantly use 5w-40?

I've used both 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum and 10w30 Pennzoil Platinum for 33,000 miles with no issues at all, I did try Rotella Synthetic 5w40 and was not happy with the big drop in gas mileage.

Stick to 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum or 10w30.

Pennzoil Ultra 5w30.

The small clicking at startup from the vvt solenoid has become much less noticeable and the engine seems smoother.

Plus people on BITOG are having an orgy over it lol

I've always been a Mobil 1 fan myself. It's what I have used in most of my cars but I did have pretty good experience with Castrol Synthetic.

I used the Castrol GTX but noticed the MPG was much lower than the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30....

My local Costco carries Mobil-1 5w30 for $5.50/qt in 6qt cases. I'm just at 1000 mi now, and am going to switch to Mobil-1 as soon as my CS SRI+TIP shows up, so I can just do all the work in the shop at once.

I'll either stick with Pennzoil Plat or Mobile 1. They use M1 in Corvettes from the factory, so I'm sure it'll work in my MS3. It worked well in my Si. I live in PA, so Pennzoil is easy to find, and I also have a local oil change place that uses Pennzoil exclusively.

Meh, I hear M1 is garbage as of late and UOA's I've seen show Pennzoil Platinum edges out both Castrol and Mobile1.

In fact, I've seen some UOA's showing 5-8,000 mile intervals on Platinum without any issues on NA 3's. Platinum has always shown to be the best choice thus-far for our cars over several UOA's.

How often do you guys change your synthetic oil? At 1K miles on the odo I put in Total/ELF 5w30 and it's at almost 4K miles right now... (so drove 3K miles) - I drive mostly highway with maybe 10-15% spiritied driving; y'all think it's safe to push another 1K?

I'm going for a 5,000 interval on the Ultra, then sending in an old sample and new sample for UOA's. Will post in UOA thread - keep an eye out (still have about 2,000 to go)

Could you please pm it to me as well or post in this thread so it is easier for me to find as I am currently using the Ultra as well.

^Is that the one that's supposed to last 15k? Is there a type of oil for our cars that's suitable for more than 5k miles, or is that something that just comes with the territory of driving a turbo'd 4 cylinder? Would an OCC help with this at all?

I've posted on another similar thread (lots of oil threads here, interesting...), but here goes again:

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, all sorts of OCI's with UOA's from 3k to 9k, and showing some of the best wear data for this engine period. Now as far as what has really been ruining these engines...bent rods... there's not an oil in the universe that will save you from that.

How many miles can the PP be ran responsibly? I usually go every 3k, but if I can stretch 4 or 5k then that's just money in the bank.

synthetics can be ran responsibly for upto 8,000 miles (on an NA engine)....BUT since we have a turbo, and much more heat (which will result in oil coking) 4500 is about the limit.

If you ever start doing AutoX or any type of driving that will cause your engine to boost and hold high RPM's more than normal daily driving, then go to a 3,000 mile oil change. But with just an occational burst of spirited driving...4,000 miles is perfectly fine.
