Eonon D5115Z - Quick review

Summary: It's kind of a piece of shit, not recommended. Removed it within about 30 minutes of installing it.

The Good

• Looks great & fits great.

• Has some cool features.

• Easy to install.

The Bad

• Directions poor on how to get the .EXE for the GPS software to load. (it is Windows CE underneath)

• Never got GPS to actually work, always got an error about waiting for a valid signal even though the unit showed to be seeing several sat's.

• Button presses didn't work most of the time. Sometimes the unit would beep to acknowledge that I had pushed a button but nothing would happen.

• Unit was kind of sluggish in general.

• Amp turn on lead didn't work. Lead comes from the back of the unit to the main Molex and has a pigtail out of that, pigtail was dead so I had to tap directly into the output between the unit and Molex to get my amps/processors online.

• USB/SD Card media player is pretty lame.

• Just kind of generally frustrating to use.

I may be wrong, but I suspect the Eonon and the Qualir/AutoDVDGPS units are manufactured by the same company and the resellers get their own little tweaks to them. The Eonon is cheaper than the Qualir by about $80 and they got it here super fast, but in the end it's still not worth our money in my opinion.

I do find myself curious about the Android based Qualir units though, but at ~$510 shipped I'm not so sure. I'm partly considering a Kenwood DNX7190HD (had a 7120 in the red MS3) but the dash kits really look cheesy.

Of course, as usual, I can't offer a good reason why I am replacing the deck in the first place, it's not like the stock deck via the PAC isn't working for me. Sure, a bigger screen is nice and being able to use USB sticks or SD cards for media is cool, but I get the same end results from my phone via Bluetooth. Dammit, why can't we just leave our stuff alone?!?!?!

I have to ask: Why not just put a phone in your dash, wire it in and call it a day?

Side note, but I bought my 2010 MS3 in Hutto a few months ago, from Covert Chevrolet. Any chance you knew an MS3 owner with a 2010 in Celestial Blue Metallic?

Too bad on the headunit, too. I keep tossing around the idea of getting something different, but keep finding little reasons not to.

Nope, never saw a CBM Gen2 around town that I recall. I've seen a red Gen2 a few times at a local church on Sun morning. I occasionally see MS3's in 79 probably passing thru... although I think I saw a black Gen2 with dark wheels again today, which makes it look like mine....

Yeah, sucks about the stereo. I know I'd be happy with an Alpine/Kenwood/Pioneer but the dash kit makes them look soooo obvious. Of course, maybe I could be the first guy to try out the '13 radio in a <'13.... I suspect that would be VERY cost prohibitive.
