The camera, from what I've read the camera plugs into the video plug in the rear of the head unit. The radio is only displaying what it is receiving from the video plug in.

If you don't want the lines you'll have to find a camera without them.

I think it's embedded in the head unit. But I'll see if I can use a video output from another source today.

It's normally the camera that has the guide lines.

Not to take this more off topic... But if the camera makes the line couldn't you fake the reverse signal and have a DVD input?

There are 2 leads on the harness of the camera, one is marked 'mirror' and the other 'parking' so I would think by toggling those it would activate the camera. But a dvd input would be awesome.

Just plug in and all wires just hide them all the way to the back. I swap the camera so I didn't have to make a hole in the bumper! Just plug and play...

Plug and play! The only playing with the wiring is if you want to change the camera to the license plate light back off camera. Then you need to cut the cable and attach the camera to make it compatible with the wiring.

Jdmage_mx5/Kritz, when you bought the camera was all the wiring and connector (for the headunit) included? Also, does enough light pass through the backup camera's housing to shine on the license plate?

Cheers.

It doesn't interfere with the lic. plate light and the back up lights illuminate plenty.

How about the wiring/connector with the camera? Did you have all the stuff to plug into the mazda headunit?

Sorry man, I think I must of misread the thread - my bad . I thought you picked up one of the camera's that plugged right into the license plate light cover, like what Carbotek did. I want to pick up something like this:

CCD Reverse Rearview Backup Camera for 2008 2013 Mazda 2 3 Brand New | eBay

Is there any wiring kit to adapt the rca kit to the mazda touchscreen headunit for the backup camera to work, or do I have to pick up that other kit for $130 to make this all work?

@kritz; or anyone else who installed a backup camera. Does your audio still play while the camera's enabled? For example if you had the radio or Bluetooth on, does that cut out while the video input is triggerred?

I have an extra roku 2 laying around, may just make a 12v-5v circuit and hardwire it to a switch! Then either use an FM modulator for the rca audio or possible buy a Bluetooth modulator.

Set my phone to be a WiFi hotspot for the internetz, and bam media center.

Sorry, just to clarify, you never noticed audio being cut? Or never noticed audio playing?

First off, Thank You OP. Per your link, I found the eBay auction. This will be big brag points for sure.

It's been a few months but any update if anyone tried the custom [backup feed]/[RCA/DVD] hook-up worked? Would be cool to hook up my android or portable DVD player.

@curving_edge; unfortunately it won't work easily.

Initially I thought the unit had an actual RCA Plug on the rear, and the video switch was triggered with signal coming in from the rca (ie backup camera turning on). But it's actually a proprietary 4 pin connector wire that connects to the unit, and then outputs out a power feed and an RCA. The feed sends power and switches to video when the canbus tells it its in reverse I believe.

If you take a closer look at the eBay kits you can notice the connector.

That's the plug where the RCA adapter goes into on the back of the HU....from that you get a power feed (ground and positive) plus an RCA

Default Rear view camera on tech package gen 2

I ordered this cable- the plug looks very very similar.

http://eBay.com/itm/301402764928?nav=SEARCH

This way I could use my own backup camera from Amazon! Save some $$

I'll report back if it fits or not, and what the output voltage is. Some CMOS cameras use a 6V output, while others use a 12V.

Worst case, just tapping into the rev light for the backup camera is always do-able!

Default Rear view camera on tech package gen 2

The cable fits the slot- but the pin outs are incorrect for the eBay link I posted. After some snipping and my multimeter I was able to get it to work.

The top two pin outs are video (labeled "2" on the HU), the bottom two are 6v power (labeled "1" on the HU).
For anyone else looking to Diy

I used a different camera that runs 12v power, so used a different power supply then the one given by the HU

Attachment 187674

did you end up using the connector or what? how did you connect it?

i have the camera but no connector. dealership won't sell me one and no one in my area can get me one. I realize i could buy a aftermarket camera on eBay cheap that will come with one but seeing that i already have the camera and just not the connector i was trying to figure out if i could get away without buying one first...

question is how did you end up connecting it? and/or do you know where i can get a connector?

Yes i ended up using it. My situation was a bit different since i found a 4-pin connector on ebay for cheap, but it was for toyotas so the pinouts were different (see above where i rewired them).

This should work for you:

Backup Camera Adatper for Mazda 2012 2014 | eBay

the power will all depend on what model camera you have. I Some are 6v and some are 12v. If its 6v, then you can use the power leads from the HU.

Mine was a 12v so i wired it directly to my accessory fuse (using an add a circuit).

From testing, it appears the OEM unit needs a signal upon start-up for the HU to recognize a camera is attached. Once it registers a camera is attached on startup it will switch to the camera feed when placed into reverse. It is for this reason, the standard "reverse light" 12v source may not work for this application, as the camera would only have power once in reverse and the HU software will not the video feed to switch.

Also....

Donate you brownie!!!

Hello guys, I purchased this camera on amazon.

Amazon.com: CAR ROVER® Color CCD Sony Chip 100% Glass Lens 170 Degree Wide Angle Car Rear View Reversing Back-up Number Plate Lamp Camera for Mazda 2 2012 2013 2014/ Mazda 3 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013: AutomotiveAmazon.com: CAR ROVER® Color CCD Sony Chip 100% Glass Lens 170 Degree Wide Angle Car Rear View Reversing Back-up Number Plate Lamp Camera for Mazda 2 2012 2013 2014/ Mazda 3 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013: Automotive

After talking to a couple of installers, they told me that I need "an adapter" and that it costs around $300. I found this adapter on eBay as described in this thread before which is much cheaper, $20.

Backup Camera Adatper for Mazda 2012 2014 | eBay

My question is, are the installers telling me that the adapter is around $300 so I just buy one of their aftermarket head units? or they really know something I don't.

If any of you has experience with these items and they work for you please let me know.

my ride is 2013 MS3 tech pack
hypertech flash
RMM
Michelin Pilot SS
SRI (on the way)...

Thank you in advance,

Just an update I finally got around to this project. It was pretty easy.

I bought the kit from 'Wayne' on e-Bay: 2013 3 WAGON Mazda Back Up Camera System Rear View Camera Kit INCLUDING HARNESS

I have the Tech Package/Bose. This comes with a connector that - as said above - plugs right into the headunit. You do not need to wire a reverse trigger. All you do is plug it in and run the wire to the back of the car (I went along the passenger side back to the trunk, and then through an opening for the license plate light harness). The connector coming off the radio provides power as well.

You will need to crawl under the back of the car a bit so I just drove up on some blocks of wood, you don't need a lot of clearance.

Once you shift into reverse with the car on (or acc. power on) the head unit will change to the camera feed automatically.

With some patience this was pretty easy - hardest part is taking off panels carefully.

The kit also came with the drill bit to put the correct size hole in the bumper.
