Default MPG?

Sorry if this is a repost, I'm new. I was curious to see what you guys are getting for gas mileage on the highway. I will be doing a lot of traveling for business and have heard that the EPA est 25mpg is a little generous. Your thoughts?

All highway at 68mph I get 30.5 mpg hand calculated. Highest I've seen is 32.3. But I drive like a granny sometimes.

In my 2010, I've never gotten less than 24.5mpg according to my onboard computer. I am completely stock and drive about 60% highway and 40% city. On a recent trip from Dallas to San Antonio, my computer said 30.5mpg for the entire trip. I was on cruise control most of the time.

On my 2010 I am averaging 26.8 mpg (HUD) since adding the SRI/TIP. That is 65% hwy and 35% city. It has also jumped 1/2 mpg since it cooled down enough to turn off the AC and just roll down the windows.

I strongly recommend getting a tuner of some sort (Hypertech/Cobb AP). Before I did, I was getting about 27mpg highway driving 72mph in my '06 MS6. Now I'm running an OTS map for 91 Octane with stock intake/exhaust. Now I see between 31 and 34mpg depending on the weather at 72mph.

I'm envious of you 60%+ highway driving people. I'm lucky if I get 22mpg on a tank.

If you guys are going by the car's computer, I got bad news for you...

My display said 27.2, I did the math myself and I was actually getting 24mpg.

I don't know how you guys are getting over 30mpg hand calculated.

Agreed! Granted I only have about 900 miles on my car with SRI/TIP and RP, but I have never seen better than 18MPG average on a full tank, hand calculated. Also keep in mind, since the car has been in break in mode I have been driving city streets (non highway) as much as possible including some spirited mountain runs, but that is how I drive most of the time anyways...

I drive real far all the time, because I live in MT and you have to drive to do anything. Is everyone running premium like their supposed to? I average 30MPGs on highway at 70-80 MPH and at times I break a hundred when I am passing Semi Trucks.

According to the on car computer, or did you actually calculate it yourself? I've had the car's computer tell me 31-32 mpg before, but it's about 3 or 4 mpg optimistic most of the time.

There should be a rule on this forum where anyone who posts their MPG goes by a hand calculated result rather than the super optimistic car computer.

I get average 21 mpg, about 70% highway, ~75mph. Shift around 3-3.5k. Intake and newly installed Hypertech. Oh, and a roof rack. But even before all of that, my MPG average was about the same.

That's odd, I can get 7 mpg going wot everywhere, maybe it's due to my longer gearing?

I get around 20mpg 80% highway @ 80mph. It's that 20% city that really ruins my numbers; could probably get closer to 24 if it weren't for the stop signs every 100ft.

Hand calculated, of course.

I get on average 17.1 mpg

on the highway I can be anywhere from 25 mpg to 50 mpg depending on what gear i'm in and how slow i'm driving.

this is monitored via dash hawk... so i dunno how accurate it is.

I have gotten ~24mpg all city on the last 3 tanks, and I do not baby it at all.

I want to get a Hypertech for it eventually, but I need new struts first (Koni FSDs ordered waiting on shipping)

edit: Mine has gone up to just over 27mpg.. (measured, computer says higher) Haven't consciously changed anything in my driving habits.

Since I have an MS6, I have to hand-calculate my fuel economy, as there isn't a built in mpg display. The most efficient speed range in the car seems to be between 55 and 65mph. As you get above 70mph, it seems like the wind resistance seems to severely impact the fuel economy (air resistance increases as a square of the speed, it's not linear, but exponential).

@327whp are you actually setting the cruise control at 70 or are you calculating that speed via OBDII readout or GPS? Most manufacturers in the mainstream make their cars' speedometers slightly optimistic. I know that when I'm doing 70mph in my car, OBDII says that I'm doing 68mph, and GPS says I'm doing 66, so it's a little hard to know what the actual rate of travel is.

It is just with the cruise itself set although when I have the GPS going it's only 1mph different. I bought my car 500 miles away and actually took that drive 3 times in (home-back-home) and I was very surprised and pleased with the the MPG compared to how Mazda actually rates these cars. I do have a K&N short ram intake on the car though which does help but that is the only engine mod so far.

Cruise control on long trips really helps smooth out your fuel trims as well which helps your mileage.

Mine is about 22 avg... this winter with the blizzaks (slightly smaller diameter, slightly higher cruising RPM) and large awesome mudflaps i've been around 20mpg. That is a 50mile/day commute for work mostly highway but lots of traffic... also getting around a-holes around here causes the right foot to get heavier and heavier the longer I'm on the road. I also warm up my car in the morning for 5-15minutes before I leave 3/5 work days a week.

In the summer w/ stock wheels and no flaps I drove across the state and back and got about 27mpg average...

It depends 80% on your driving style if you'll get close to EPA numbers or not... I drive aggressive some of the time (in a safe manner and lots of performance driving experience, tyvm) and get better than estimated city mileage and mostly slightly lower highway....

I average about 28 MPG w/85% highway cruising at 70. I used to have a 2.5L hatch and it got about 29 MPG. The flat roads in Florida help a lot. If you're not going faster than about 72 or constantly accelerating those mileage numbers easily attainable. RPMs in 6th gear going about 70 are only ~2750 which is pretty low compared to most 4-cylinders I've driven, that's another contributing factor. In the city you're pretty much SOL though ha ha. It's just too much fun running through the gears.

overall average is 24.5. I get 17 in city, stoplight to stoplight crap driving. Highway, with cruise control, I can get 26.

I don't drive like a saint and on every on ramp I dog it (is the only vice I have left.) I mash it from 2nd gear to 5th pretty often. I think the key to getting good gas mileage on this car is cruise control once you hit cruising altitude. I've had trips, not using cruise control, where I got 100 miles on a tank. I've gotten close to 400 miles a tank driving like grammy on dilaudid.

I always use premium and sometimes add octane booster. I'm on mobil 1 if that makes a difference.

I use the road trip app for the iPhone, takes all your data and graphs it as well as adding gps tags when you fill up so you know what station you filled at. You can also log maintenance and set reminders, all kinds of nice features.

With that said I manage a 24.74 avg over 8 months. 60/40 highway/city.
My max mpg was 29 on a trip to Orlando, minimum was 21.
Only meaningful mod is a CS SRI.

I just picked up my car in Virginia this weekend. Forty seven minutes later I got my first ticket in the car doing 76 in a 55. It's really hard keeping it below 80 because 60mph is still pointing downward on the speedo. That said, I filled up and drove home on cruise control with the exception of passing everyone on the steep upgrades going through the mountains from Virginia to New York. Made it in one tank, 29 and change mpg for 335 miles.

Avg about 23 mpg calculated by hand with mostly city driving and a lead foot . The HUD calculator is very optimistic.

22.4mpg last tank, 35% city, 65% highway, pump calculated. I get really bad mpg in my city commute, 3 miles one way, 6 traffic lights, car doesn't really get warmed up at all. using winters on 16" steels, cdn winter gas is also to blame. I can easily get 30mpg on the highway with cruise control at 68 - 69mph

Went skiing a couple weeks ago 220 miles round trip, kept the cruise control on at 65 mph ,no traffic and I got 31.2 mpg hand calucuated.most of the time the trip computer is full of shit ,it's always two to three mpg off I wouldn't trust it just like the avg.mph. How can it be avgerage of 40 something miles per hour when I'm flying down the parkway at 90+ mph for almost an hour, just don't get it!

Yes the trip computer is quite optimistic to say the least. If it says you have 50 miles left on your tank according to that, find a gas station. Nearly ran out of gas the first time I drove it thinking I had 25 miles to spare to a decent town when it showed 100 left.

And I average about 26 on the interstate running 79 mph with the cruise set.
