| Not Ranked : 0 score Miller cycle has to be supercharged (it's a large part of what the Miller cycle is... essentially a supercharged Atkinson cycle), done for efficiency reasons. Not saying it's impossible of course, but I HIGHLY doubt you'll ever see a supercharged, performance Otto cycle from mazda. Too much turbo love there.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Given that all the Skyactiv engines are Atkinson cycle, I wouldn't be shocked if the next Speed is a Miller cycle engine. Would make a lot more sense than a NA Speed. |

EDIT: Doing some googling now and a lot of sites are saying it operates similarly to an Atkinson cycle at certain loads/rpms, but can't really find much technical to back it up

| Not Ranked : 0 score Its all just trickeration with the valve timing. If you close the intake valve late, some air in the chamber reverts back into the intake manifold and your motor is technically running an atkinson cycle. Allows you to keep the throttle plate more open so there is less pumping loss as well. Thus the very high static compression ratios on the skyactives, but when you look at the dynamic ratio its actually substiantally less. The bonus is if you want more power you can close the valave on time and increase torque. Zigatapatalka

| Not Ranked : 0 score I don't think a Speed3 should be NA. Although I am a huge fan of NA cars, you have the mazda 3 for the NA aspect of things. The speed 3 is a turbo car and should remain that way. With that being said, if it were to go a NA route, I think I should be much further down the road. If it were to go the NA route, I would love to see a hybrid AWD version that utilizes new technology to make the same power that forced induction would make. Unfortunately, that is a lot further down the road and with our current understanding thats released to the public you don't see hybrids making that kind of power. Overall, with our current technologies, I think the Speed3 should remain turbo and maybe in the future once we have spiffy science shit can it go NA

Hell no. I don't know what you people's obsession is about AWD. It is too expensive up front and costly to repair.

Interesting that the Mazda engineer they talked to claimed it was a Miller cycle engine. They have to be doing something weird with it to only get 155 hp out of a direct injected 2 liter with a 12:1 compression ratio. | |
