What wastegate should I run? Rob is a busy guy and hasn't replied back yet on which to get. Was gonna order percisions 46mm gate and 4-port.

Rob said he wants to run a large gate w/ low spring, idk if that means 44 or 46mm gate.

Well if you go with an external wastegate, then there is no real way to compare this build to a stock turbo.

I just don't kno what wastegate @rfinkle2; wants me to run, since he doesnt like messaging me back through email haha , so I can order all those parts

Had 2 NATOR AZ locals pull 340 something in feb on the dyno with the k04. 1 with meth (speed3), other with 100%E85 (speed6). I can pull the dyno sheets, there somewhere here on MSF.

I myself only put down 338/377 on 3gallons of E85 and no meth at the time .

I am very interested in your results from this.. I will be building my block next year and debating CR as I type this. But I'll end up with some stupid big turbo I'm sure lol.

44 and 46 both use the same flange, so thats really just up to whatever flange you put on there... may as well go 46 if you ask me, i dont think theres such a thing as "too big" with wastegates.

Not really. If you make over that 330hp with the new setup, can you say with any certainty that x% of that came from the ewg and y% of that came from the wheel? Nope, not at all. If we had anyone else running an ewg K04, we might be able to make some educated guesses, but we simply don't.

I suppose, if you had a motivated tuner, that you could have both gates hooked up, but have tunes with one of them locked so they couldn't operate anymore...then we really could say that yes, the new wheel is doing x% with the internal gate, and with the ewg it is doing y% more.

How would u keep the gate closed? Well I may get the cpe manifold. Or I can just make my racebuilt one ewg, and use a block off plate. Then I can tune with and without ewg if rob is willing to do that or clint? Haha.


Dumb question, how does a 4-port get hooked up?? With/without ewg.

if your gate is to big you loose all your resolution for controlling boost at low WGDC values. This would be more prevalent on a smaller turbo as well......

no one needs a gate bigger then a 38mm unless your running something like 8lbs on a 35R or bigger

Well i hope rob can chime in soon and lmk what gate to run, but this was the last email i got from him the other day.


"I'm very tempted to say that we should try a large gate, with a very low spring... Maybe even consider a 4 port solenoid with a low crack pressure ... something like 5 psi in the gate... the 4 port will handle the remainder.

—That is just my first thought considering our primary focus is creep on the high CR engine."

Ill be running a 38mm gate and I am looking at 600+hp after everything is done. For the 4cyl crowd, the 44mm gates are for people running 700+hp.

Big wastegates are for big v8 people that wanna run a huge turbo with low boost. They have to vent most of the exhaust flow through the wastegate, hence the need for huge wastegates.

For our engine, its like trying to modulate the water level of a kiddy pool with the flood gates on the Hoover Dam.

I was thinking more from the loss or resolution in addition to the large turbo made daily driving not so fun.

I just sold my JGS wastegate but they're awesome and have a very fast response time due to being a piston actuated wastegate. The 40mm gate would be plenty for anyone on here but it would still allow for fine tuning. They'll fit on 36-40mm flanges while being way more compact than a similarly sized Tial.

Just got my dual MD oil catch can installed.......Ordered my 44mm wastegate, Mac 4-port ebcs.

Just rly waiting on the turbo. Taking a lil longer than expected on it. Had usps crack the housing during shipping. Which is shitty.

Sry dont have an pics, i can try and pull a pic up from google or something.....Basically the backs of the turbo wheels have a lil hump in them to space them out when on the turbo rod, but this one was cut flat, so they guy had to make a spacer to space it enough or wheel would sit to much inward and not close enought the the comp housing.

See how the turbo wheel has a spacing on the table, doesnt sit flat on table, its like a cone shape that comes outwards. Mine was flat so had to have a exact size spacer to fit.

Heres another pic, see bottom of wheel that cone like shape volcano on bottom....Mine wheel came without that, so guy needed to make a spacer that exact size to space it enough on the turbo shaft.







I talked to my machine guy and turbo will be done tomorrow and shipped out!


Also my wastegate and 4-port ebcs came in and a filter for my dual occ setup for the vented can.

humm your not Lucky with that turbo, looks like they copied the front of the Wheel correctly but forget the back or maybe it was for another turbo brand with a different back housing ?

Hope it won't cost you that much for the spacer.

This is what turbolab wrote me after finding out.


"no its not. Its very common to use a spacer with the pte and garrett turbos because some many wheels vary with 2.5 and 5mm super backs. tell him to use the old thrust collar as a spacer it will work perfectly"

That spacer has to be exact, unless somehow thurst collar spaces it enough but sounds rigged and not safe.



I wasn't gonna go through the hassle of returning and trying to get the right one. I said fuck it and had him make a spacer.

Hmmmm... So I happen to have a good low mileage k04 hanging around. Turbolab said they would rebuild the k04, convert to the 50x61mm and rebalance the rotating assembly for $350...

That is just cheap enough to make me want to try it and see how it turns out. I am inquiring about their turn around times and a few other things. Unfortunately, my search on 'turbolab' hasn't really yielded a lot of information to give me any sort of real world confidence in them.

That's why I didn't go with them. No info and super sketchy when I called them. They didn't even say like who os was, not turbolab or anything. And sounded like they were at a party....I hung up cause I thought I dialed the wrong number.


I have the 50x65mm wheel from them but went with my own turbo guy that i trusted....I should have results soon enough tho!

The turbolab guy has been emailing me back from his iphone, so it's just a guy with a shop I gather. His communications haven't been the best, but he is responsive. He sent me a pic of a Mazdaspeed k04 he just reworked; I attached it here.

I am still gathering some information but for $350 it is almost worth a shot. Sounds like a few week turnaround and he has wheels in stock.

Yeah it just seems like a guy who works out of a small shop. He is a nice guy and helpful, but not the fastest with stuff. It is good enough for me though, and his work seems quality.

I have a chain of 55 emails back and fourth with him. So he is super patient as well.
