Fortunately the wife is out of town for two weeks, so that's my deadline. But I have a high school reunion out of town this coming weekend, so if I can at LEAST finish the VVT install by friday I'll be a happy motherfucker.

What gun are your using? I would check the torque spec on it. With the right gun, it will come off. Your air compressor should be sufficient...

It's not a high end gun, I think I paid like $120 for it.

Still, I would think that the torque it applies is over anything you can do with a breaker bar.

Let me know if you get that Earthquake gun how it works as I might be looking into getting a set of air tools and compressor soon.

I dunno if I can spring for an air gun right now since I have a decent one.

I'll be working on getting the bind plug out first and foremost anyways.

the TSB=worthless to me because it tells me what I already know, the VVT on these cars has a tendency to go.
New VVT from mazda fixes the 'issue', but mazda won't replace vvt under warranty even though they've recognized an 'issue'.

Back to the bind plug. Anyone else have any other ideas?

actually, the tsb explains how to check for signs of the vvt actually failing...rather than fingering your valve cover to arbitrarily decide the chain is too loose.

anyway, it was more for readers of this thread since you're already beyond the point of diagnosing.

The chain isn't loose, which tells me it's not the tensioner. It sounds EXACTLY like all those vids on youtube of bad VVT via the rattle on startup. Plus, the tensioner makes noise not just at startup but throughout the rev range.

So, I get the cam completely uncovered. Now I just need to figure out how to loosen the chain enough to get the cam out.

Problem is I just can't access that bind plug, it's stripped and the motor is back up on the mounts. Oh, PMM popped, methinks. Woohoo.

exhaust cam is zip tied to chain to keep timing..................

Am I just screwed? Am I just going to have to take the timing cover off?

Depending on how long it took you. I know I don't want to do it myself, regardless, haha.

No Doug. Intake manifold mostly off. Finishing that tomorrow, installing injector seals and crowsfee studs/nuts. New side mounts come tomorrow so those go on and k04 comes off.

Still need a new bind plug though, and ordered EGR delete from Jbarone.

Also will be getting carb cleaner and cleaning the intake valves off the best that I can.

Well, since I've pretty much torn the accessories off this car, I've decided to block off egr and probably do an oil catch can.
I still need to pick up a bind plug for the timing cover, and @bmylez has been so kind as to lend me his injector tool to finish up the seal install.

Stock turbo is off, new turbo is on the manifold and in. Need to tighten the bolts on the mani and install the lines, then that part is done. Waiting on a BT inlet, the manufacturer drop shipped per vendor instructions, but the manufacturer sent the wrong inlet, so that should be here in a couple days. Will be installing a 3bar MAP on the intake mani while it's out.

I tried to take a couple pics of the gunk buildup on the valves after I took off the intake mani, the only picture that worked you can barely make out the gunk. It was heavy on all 8 valves. Disgusting. I'm surprised they didn't frickin seize on me. So I soaked them heavily in deep creep and used a toothbrush as best I could. On initial crank, i'm going to remove the spark plugs and crank over a few times just to push the gunk out without hydrolocking from all that deep creep and gunk/shit. Tried to vacuum it out via shop vac but no worky.

Anyways, here are some pics.

VC off:

Crankshaft SST in place during VVT actuator replacement process:

You can BARELY see the gunk buildup on the valve. It's there. It's nasty.

sexy model next to POS turd (which coincidentally after 65k miles has NO shaft play)

Better angle GTX3076R

And mounted on the mani, in place on the head

Going will be slow since I've got to watch the kid alone this week until the wife gets out of town.........so no working on it until after i put her to bed.

It's progressing!
To do list:
1) Receive/install EGR block off
2) Install injector seals/crows foot studs and nuts
3) Tighten exh. mani nuts and turbo/mani nuts
4) Install coolant/oil lines to turbo
5) Reinstall intake mani with sure TIG (or should I re-use stock gasket? hmm)
6) Install SU trans mount (pass mount already installed)
7) assemble BT inlet/big maf SRI
8) Reinstall fmic piping
9) flash base BT tune

Was able to pop out the injectors thanks to @bmylez sending the injector removal tool.
Popped 'em out, put on the injector seals. Had to heat every one of 'em to slide 'em on. Put blue permatex around 'em too.
Then, installed the crows feet studs with blue permatex, cut the stock washer off the stock torx bolt, and torqued the nut down to 25 ft-lbs with a light weight oil.
Tomorrow, SURE TIG install and intake mani re-install, maybe SU trans mount goes on tomorrow too. we'll see.

Okay! Progress! VTCS deleted. Butterflies and rod are out. Ground down a good bit of that chunk of aluminum in one of the runners for cylinder 1 as well.
EGR delete, installed SURE TIG, torqued down correctly.

Need to bolt up the dipstick support and that wiring shit, reconnect lines to CDFP, and cinch down the turbo/attach lines, then install valve cover, intake, and button up FMIC piping.

Oh, FWIW, I soaked the butterflies/screws in deep creep like twice trying to get the carbon crap off, I was going to keep it in but decided to delete. That surely made it easier to remove those screws. You'll want to soak the hell out of them when you do it.

VTCS deleted!

IM in with TIG!

Dino oil = non-synthetic, throwaway oil, basically, right? Is switching to it bad from running synth for a while?

No, it's not bad to switch to it. I'm using dino oil for the "wash thru" and break in since I did the VVT actuator swap too. Basically gonna fire the car up with it and run it for a few miles before swapping back to syn.

I've never heard of anybody running break-in oil for a turbo. If you are really close to an oil change, yes, do it. But if you only have 1000 miles on the oil, it's not gonna be that dirty and the turbo will be fine.

I ran dino oil because I just did VVT actuator swap and I want to clean all the gunk and shit outta the engine. I also added some seafoam to the oil. I'll drain it tomorrow night after some driving and add the Syn. I was beyond the need for an oil change before BT swap.

In other news: IT RUNS!
ALL done with the install. Gonna verify no leaks and drive it around tomorrow. Here's the initial crank vid:
